We are stunned to read that Alan Pardew may be even thinking about bringing Carlton Cole to Newcastle.
Paul Konchesky – Liverpool reject
As we pointed out yesterday, Shola Ameobi has a better scoring record than Carlton Cole in club football, and may even be a better player too, so that’s at least one very good reason Newcastle shouldn’t even consider bringing Cole to Tyneside.
Yes, we know managers look back on their former players, and then are tempted to bring them to the club they are currently managing, but another story today is that Pardew may want to bring Paul Konchesky to Newcastle in place of Jose Enrique.
Bobby Robson was interested in Paul, but that was about eight years ago when he looked a decent prospect.
Paul turns 30 next week, and hardly fits the profile of players Newcastle are usually after – younger players who can still improve at Newcastle.
If Konchesky is brought in to replace Jose Enrique, and Carlton Cole is brought in to replace Andy Carroll, you will not have to tell the Newcastle fans anything.
They will know immediately by these moves, that the club’s ambitions are limited – very limited – and it will hardly go over well with fans who want to see Newcastle back with the big boys again. You need good players to do that.
These two players have never been top players ever, and they are not going to improve if they ever arrive at Newcastle – so what’s the point?
While we understand Alan may be looking at some of his former players to bring to Tyneside, he should significantly increase his standards regarding the class of player he is looking to bring to Newcastle this summer – if these two stories are true.
We cannot just bring in free agents or players that Newcastle can get on the cheap – that will not be good enough by a country mile.
In short, Konchesky and Cole are simply not good enough to be brought to Newcastle.
What do you think of these two players?
