Cheick Tiote Yellow Cards Starting To Be A Problem

Since Cheick Tiote recently served a two match ban for receiving 10 yellow cards, and since then he’s played four matches for Newcastle and got a yellow card in every single one of the games.

Cheick Tiote – 14 yellow card plus one red card this season

That means one more yellow card this season and Tiote will get a 3 match ban, and that will be 9 matches he will have missed through suspension this season.

The ban will carry over into next season, and that’s hardly a good way for Newcastle to start next any season.

On the other hand, Cheick has been one of Newcastle’s very best players this season, and when he’s not in the side, Newcastle are not the same side.

And worse than that,  if he misses any of the remaining two games with Smith and Guthrie both out injured, it’s an open question as to who will come in to replace him.

Alan Pardew says he has thought about resting Tiote,  and if he was to do that the Chelsea game is the game to do that in.

That’s because Newcastle can beat West Brom in the very last game at home two eeks today, but even at their very best, Newcastle will have a hard job next Sunday at Stamford Bridge against an in-form Chelsea side, who have taken 25 points from their last 9 league games.

West Brom looked hopeless today at Wolves, especially in that first half, and were beaten 3-1, and that has given Wolves some chance of staying up this season, but the West Brom defense looked woeful.

This is what Alan said today about Cheick Tiote:

“I watch the DVDs, I watch him in training – I’m doing everything I can to think of a way to protect him,”

“He’s on the verge of a three-match ban again, but I’ve missed him for five games already. Do I leave him out of the last two? That would be seven he’s missed already for ill discipline.”

“That’s not right. He’s got to learn and I’ll be looking at him very, very closely next year to make sure he doesn’t get any booking that isn’t absolutely necessary.”

“He needs to control his temper. Sometimes he gets a little bit carried away in the heat of the battle.” “In the Premier League in his first year though? He’s done brilliantly.”

“And I think it is something we would rather have than him be too passive or technically poor or not quick or strong enough.”

Unless Pardew rests the Ivory Coast International,  it seems almost certain he will pick up a 15th yellow card in the last two games, and will need to serve a three match ban.

Newcastle have so many injuries that they are forced to play Cheick because there’s not anybody available to cover for him, such has been the demise of the Newcastle squad this year, through injury.

But Cheick must improve his disciplinary record next season, otherwise he will be missing quite a few games again.

That’s one significant area of improvement for the 24 year old defensive midfielder.

Comments welcome.

its a tricky one, but maybe would be best to rest him now, as we want him there for the first game next season

Isn’t it a record for the most cards in one PL season? Not the best award to win!

I agree that we should rest him for the Chelsea game, and tell him he can start the WB game IF he makes sure he doesn’t get a card in that game. Mind in the last couple of games his reputation has preceded him, with the result that the refs have given him yellows when he’s actually made good tackles. He’s been unlucky for some of these cards, plus the red card v stevenage was also a good tackle.

Who could replace him for Chelsea game? How about:

That would do the trick, although I think he’d rather start with strolla rather than Ranger. I think either Ranger or Kuqi would be a better bet than strolla at the moment. He just doesn’t seem up to the task: long balls don’t stick to him, he doesn’t win many headers, he can’t run fast enough to get away or past anyone, and he can’t score from range.

I like shola as a person and a geordie lad, but at the end of the day he does’nt cut the mustard. He may well be utilised as a super sub next season.

Stoke are 2-0 up against Chelsie. If Stoke win or even draw they will go to 8th dropping us to 11. i cant see us finishing in the top half but 11th is still good for a promoted club.

Tiote is an excellent player, without him we would be down below. I hope Gosling is fit next season therefore he can provide an adequate backup for Tiote at the DM position.

And please don’t mention Alan Smith as our DM 🙂

my opinion about Tiote will not change. his disciplinary record is one of the worse if not the worst in the Premier League. He is not that ace that people talk about here in this blog, he is a struggling player at best. A defensive midfielder doesn`t mean necessarily a violent player. He was there when we lost 2×1 to Bolton, when we lost to Tottenham 2×0, when we lost to Stoke City 4 x 0. Why is he so important for Newcastle United? Most of you watched Falcão play for Brazil National team in the 80`s. That is an example of a very good defensive midfielder.

Unfortunately, Tiote gets booked for being Tiote. Once refs get an idea of a player, the look for reasons to book them. Same happens with Barton and Smith. I’m not saying none of his cards are deserved, but a few have been shocking decisions

    @tdt, i agree

Why risk Tiote missing 3 games at the start of next season for 2 meaningless games this season? We wont beat Chelsea if we played with 12 men.

WBA at home we should just attack and tdt’s formation would be enough to win.

Give Tiote a break and see him refreshed for next season.

Marcos you are a funny man.

Tiote bit his tongue yesterday and didn’t launch himself into tackles. Then late in the game he gets booked. It was a pathetic yellow. Tiote was gutted, he rolled into a ball and thought the whole world was against him.

I partially agree with Marcos. Not that Tiote is a bad player per say but he is very much learning the english game.

I also think he is over rated by NUFC fans because he has a bit of flair and started the season so well but he goes into tackles very heavy (has recently calmed because of experience in the game) which is why refs see him go in on someone and instantly think yellow card.

Saying he just gets yellows for being Tiote isnt far off imo but his reputation is one made by himself much as Bartons is.

tdt that formation is spot on but it wont happen

Ferguson is seen as a LB not a LW (probably because we have no LBs)

Gutti is played on the left he wont be moved to the right regardless of his prefered position

And Ranger cant start a game, sad but true he gets lost in himself

Marcos, clearly he is not a struggling defender at best… Chelsea put in an offer for him believed to be around 20m in january, and I’m sure with the amount of talent scouts and football experts they have they wouldn’t offer £20m for a player who is “struggling at best”.

    20m says you’re wrong mate

Nolan96 the world against him maybe apart from us(NUFC Fans) I think we need and are main targets are A Centre Back 2 Left Back because Enrique will probably leaves, 2 Wingers A Defensive Centre Midfielder and 2 Strikers

If I was Alan Pardew And got £35m in the summer I would

    Samba £7m
    Wendt Free
    M’Bengue+Tabanou £10m
    Larsson Free
    Wanyama £2m
    Sow £10m
    Wickham £6m

    Soderburg Loan
    Campbell Free
    Enrique £12m
    Routledge £3m
    Smith £2m
    Xisco £2m
    Loverkands £2m

Total Income: £-14m+£35m=£21m so maybe someone in January

    GK Krul
    RB Simpson
    CB Coloccini
    CB Samba
    LB M’Bengue
    CDM Tiote-Wanyama when Tiote suspended
    RM Jonas
    CM Barton
    LM Ben Arfa
    CAM Nolan(c)
    ST Sow

    Gosling-Wanyama when unfit
    Top 8!

CheickTiote you have to understand that we will always have people on this forum that get really weird ideas and when they do they cannot see the wood for the trees.

It’s a bit of a waste of time trying to point out the common sense facts to folks like marcos, it’s a bit like pointing out to Crawfordladd17 that his “out list” doesn’t have a lot of objective thought about it as the wages for Smith and Xisco are never going to be matched by any other club as neither will give performances that will justify their transfer fees and wages so they are going to see out their contracts at NUFC.
