Newcastle After 25 Year Old Gateshead Born Striker

It’s very likely that Newcastle will sign a couple of players from the lower leagues in England this summer.

Danny Graham – 25 year-old Gateshead born striker

And there is a report from Sky Sports this afternoon that Newcastle are interested in Watford striker Danny Graham, who is 25 years old and was born where?

In Gateshead of course, the same place as a certain Andrew Carroll, which is just across the River Tyne from Newcastle.

Graham was brought up in Leam Lane in Gateshead and went to Heworth Grange Comprehensive School, and he played once for the England U20 side back in 2005.

The 6’1″ Geordie has finished the season as the top scorer in the Championship with 24 goals, and of course last season Andy scored a good 19 goals while playing in the Championship last season, and proceeded to notch 11 goals in the Premier League before the end of last year.

Graham was also chosen in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, for his exploits this seaosn.

Graham started his career with Middlesbrough back in 2003, and was sent out on loan to Darlington, Derby County, Leeds United Blackpool and Carlisle before signing permanently for Carlisle in 2007. He played 20 times for Middlesbrough with two goals between 2004 an 2006.

In July of 2009 he finally joined Walford, and in 98 games in the last couple of seasons he has scored a decent 41 goals, albeit in England’s second division, and in his career so far, Danny  has played 286 club games and scored 86 goals.

Sky Sports is reporting that the Magpies have been keeping close tabs on him and scouting reports on him have apparently been positive.

It will be a huge risk if Newcastle sign the Geordie 25 year-old – turns 26 in August –  since he is completely untested at the highest levels, and seems to have been a bit of a journeyman player until he joined Watford.

And Newcastle have to be very careful that they don’t just go for cheaper players who may not have the necessary class or skill to make it on Tyneside.

We can just see the headlines that Newcastle replace Andy Carroll with £3.5M signing – that’s a guess at the fee – but he was born in the same place as Andy Carroll.

It would be ironic if Danny was indeed signed to replace another Gateshead born striker – the £35M Andrew Carroll – who is now plying his trade at Liverpool – when he’s fit and is already a full England International.

We have not seen this player play, so it’s hard to offer any real view on how good he is, or could become, so if any readers have seen him, they may like to comment on what he’s like.

Comments welcome.

Haven’t seen too much, but the lads a target man who clearly knows where the back of the net is.
He’s not great on the eye, but puts a shift in everytime I’ve seen him.
I’d ‘be’ disappointed if we bought him as our number 9, but as a back up I’d ‘be’ happy enough, although really like the Finn playing in holland as a back up, clearly Graham would ‘be’ a cheaper alternative .

I hope the Chronicle is right and we are after Salomon Rondon at Malaga. He looks pretty good from what I’ve seen.

Pace, power, finishing, heading. He’s got it all and he’s only 21:

im undecided, wont be disappointer either way, whether we get him or not. However i believe after seeing him a couple of times in the Championship he seems to hard the drive and passion that we crave from our players. Give him a chance if he come he certainly is a clinical finisher

Funny that he’s the championship’s top scorer and we know next to nothing about him!

For the record, in their last seasons in the championship:
    Graham 45games 24goals (0.53 per game)
    Carroll 39games 17goals(0.44 per game)

Considering Carroll achieved his feat with top players Nolan, Smith, Jonas, Guthrie feeding him the perfect balls for his goals.
Graham might actually be a good buy for 2-4M…
    Definite yes for me.

Hooper would probably play well with Ben Arfa as he is quick and doesn’t waste many chances.

Decent player but isnt going to “WOW” the fans or play he is good (for backup) but we dont need backup we need to be starts who are ALOT better than what we have not buying players who are on par with the lot we got.

SL_toon – Comparing those goals to game stats he is worth a deal in the region of 2-4M. You have a good point about him not having the service Judas had and still scored more than him. Worth a try as an Ameobi/Kuqi/Lovenkrands replacement but surely not our next #9.

I use to play upfront with Danny at under 10s and 11s for a local team (Washington based). Also seen him a few times playing for the district in later years.
Couldn’t believe it took until he was nearly 17 (playing for Chester-le-street) till he got scouted he was unbelievable finisher in the box. Kept an eye on him since he turned pro and looks to have come on massively this year… Pretty sure he scored a prem goal for boro against Charlton – a brave header and was knocked out by Kiely in the process.
I think he’ll end up going to QPR or someone like that tho. Would prefer him to Shane Long tho

Am i on the right site here. 99 percent of the comments are positive. i personally think he would be a good buy for about 3 mil. he is a good player and bangs the ball in the net more than most and as a bonus he is a local lad. who knows but this lad could be another surprise. no body knew tiote until he cam here he was a bench warmer in the dutch league but look at him now

i posted on here a few weeks ago about lower league players coming here and doing a job for us… such as some players have at villa, everton, wigan and so on…. they got a chance to play at those clubs to prove their worth – however this guy, many people who have not seen him play are writing him off before we have even put in a supposed bid for him.

Get a grip, some people on here want champions league players this summer…. what would you say if qpr went after some champions league players this summer??? you would laugh – but lets not forget that just because we have a big stadium doesnt mean we wernt in the championship last year – a team takes all sorts of players to be built around. Grafters, flair, poachers, man mountains that are just unmovable…. example take a look at the man united team… how many would realistically get into the best 11 in the world right now?? Yet they have had their foundations built up over years and their squad players are now on par with our starting players.

All im saying is all too often do fans dictate who gets a chance to wear the jersey…. a few years back when enrique was just signed and wasnt playin well many wanted rid of him, these players need time to gel, to blend with the squad….. give them that time and dont write them off before they kick a ball

I wonder what ben Arfa must be thiking !!

can’t really blame Enrique for leaving if the height of our ambition is a 26 year old journeyman from the lower leagues.

why are we mucing about hwne we could get the younger, equally prolific Sigthorsson.

ed your rather negative on the lad considering you yourself say you haven’t seen him play and just copied a wiki entry and a news article (tho where would your blog be without doing that all day long )
he’s scored nearly as many goals in his time with watford as shola has in his whole time in the game , not to mention the rest of our strikers you could be here all day picking apart the comparisons and the local (ish) lad would come out on top , it’s easy for a player to become abit of journeyman once first released from clubs after a youth run .
bringing back local lads who are doing well is never a risk , and the motivation of finally playing in the black and white after spell’s elsewhere means we haven’t got somebody who’s here just for a wage packet .

any way just cause someone scores loads in a season doesnt mean we should put an offer in look at the players we have had in the past……..we signed the golden boot winner from a world cup and what did he do……..thats right look like a total pri-ck on the pitch. we need 2 proven strikers and a striker for backup but we have best coming back which proved people wrong and has done very well.

I rate graham cause I live 10 min from watford and yes support newcastle but my bro supports watford as his local team and man u aswell and my bro is always going on about graham

this im my opinion are championship players I think we should buy:
Danny Graham (3.5m) or Shane Long (4m) to partner another ST
Connor Wickham (12m) loan to bolton and let owen coyle work his magic as he has with Wiltshire and Studridge
Ashley Williams best defender in england outside of pl (5m)
and Max Gradel. A pacey winger and versatile just what we need (4m)
theres 4 signigs already who would improve the sqaud and be a cut price aswell then we would only need another ST, a LB, cover for Toite and a creative CM

All three youngsters that are in the first team subs at the minute ( Airey, Richardson, and Tavernier) have scored in the reserves cup game. Tavernier’s was a SCREAMER.
