Newcastle At Impasse On Joey Barton Contract

News today in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle remain at an impasse in discussions with Joey Barton on his new contract.

Joey Barton – captains Newcastle today

It seems that Joey wants as much as a four year extension to his current contract which runs out next summer, and Newcastle offered the 28 year-old a two year extension in January.

If Joey gets his wish then he would remain on Tyneside until the summer of 2016. How about agreeing half way – and give Joey a three year extension?

Manager Alan Pardew wants to keep his best players at Newcastle of course, because he’s not daft, and Alan is said to be trying to get Newcastle to get some agreement with Barton, who will captain the side at Stamford Bridge today.

It seems contract negotiations will continue in earnest once the season completes next Sunday, and Alan said this about Joey’s contract  today:

“That is a process that will have to start when the season ends.”

We have to hope some agreement can be reached with Joey, and we are also waiting for an announcement that captain Kevin Nolan has signed his new long term deal.

Once that happens, we were hoping Joey would also sign on at Newcastle long term, and there is even news today that Jose Enrique may be having second thoughts about leaving Newcastle.

If Newcastle can sign Nolan, Barton and Enrique on new long term deals next month, that would give the club a massive massive lift.

We might even have a decent team next season. 😀

Comments welcome.

I agree, it does seem a bit odd that we seem to have the contracts all but wrapped up, only for news to go cold again. Are Barton and Nolan waiting for the summer to see if another club makes an offer, at least so that they can bargain for better wages..?

At the same time, it is a big decision for both players. They’re getting into their late 20’s. If they commit to Newcastle, this’ll be where they spend their best years. Sadly that also means they’ll be signing away their chances of ever winning silverware (if we’re being honest).

AngerOfTheNorth, I have a feeling they want a sign of Ashley’s ambition before signing.

I think a two year extension is a good deal for Barton as it means he would be here for 3 more seasons so what more does he want. He owes us a hell of a lot and shouldn’t be the one dictating his contract. Ashley could easily of sacked him and his career would of been in ruins but we backed him.

Makes sense GG. Links in with what I said about this being a big decision for them both – if they tie themselves to the club and Ashley refuses to invest, they’ll have thrown their careers away.

Barton has a bloody cheek. He should take what is offered. He still owes this club big time. We have only seen him perform the last two seasons. No bugger else wanted him now there is a queue for his signature. Show your appreciation to the club Barton or f… off else where. No player is bigger then the club.

All of this “he should do X Y and Z” stuff doesn’t help – the choice is his, so it’s more worthwhile to understand WHY he’s holding off from signing than saying he “should” sign out of gratefulness. He’s helped to keep us up this season, which is a pretty decent contribution.

And if Ashley doesn’t invest this summer, I wouldn’t blame any player for wanting to leave.

    I’m guessing it’ll be:

    Krul
    Simpson, Coloccini, Taylor, Enrique
    R Taylor, Barton, Vuckic, Gutierrez
    Ameobi, Lovenkrands

Bit uninspiring and predictable, but there it is. I’d quite like to see Ranger and Ferguson given a run out though.

I think joey shud get his 4years so that he is here for 5. he has been great for us this season and last. and alan pardew says he wants his players on long term contracts.. so 3 years is long :S.

also who ever said no other club wants him is wrong 3/4 clubs have already said they are intrested in barton.

and who ever said he is waiting for the summer so he can bargain for wages is also wrong because barton said if he gets the 4 he will take a considerable wage cut…

if only have for 3 years then in 2014 we will have all this shit again + nowadays players never owe a club anything and saying he has to sign cause he owes us is just stupid and his agent will say cya later

Actually toontime news papers have said that clubs are interested in Barton never have I read any quotes from clubs about being interested in him.

He is aging and a risk for any club with his attitude and behaviour both on and off the pitch. Plus he only offered to take a wage cut because no team would pay what he was on for him hes still asking for a lot of money.

Barton wont be going anywhere, hes just playing hardball and not letting Ashley take the mick, If he has to take a pay cut then he wants a contract which will see him secure at the club til the end of his career

If Barton or anyone else wants to go, then let them go, because without sound investment this summer, relegation as only beeen postponed. Just think if we hadn’t beaten Brum in the last home game we would have been shitting ourselves again. This 3rd rate manager and twerp of an owner, have taken us perilously close to the drop again, and will do next season, so pray that somebody comes in with an offer the FCB can’t refuse.

Liverpool not having clinched a Champions League spot has been a major factor in Jose Enrique’s U-Turn. If we buy well this summer I am confident he will sign an extension. Barton and Nolan will probably sign by next week. We need all of them.
