Newcastle After Top Young French Defender

News today that both Manchester United and Newcastle United, in addition to some other top European clubs,  are interested in 18 year-old French defender Raphael Varane.

Raphaël Varane – interesting Newcastle United?

The 6’3″ center-back has so far played 20 times for the Lens first team this season, and  is said to be one of their best players. although Lens were relegated from Ligue 1 with just 35 points, and will  finish second bottom of the French League this season.

The French magazine L’Sport is reporting that both United managers Alex Ferguson and Alan Pardew, are interested in getting the £9M rated player.

Varane joined Lens back in 2002 as a 9 year-old,  and it’s the only club he’s ever been at, and the youngster had this to say today:

“I hope a meeting with the club will happen next week and we can discuss the situation.”

The Lille born player has 2 caps at the France U18 level and 3 caps at the France u21 level, which is impressive given the lad only turned 18 last month.

From what we can tell Raphael is a top young player, and he would be a good acquisition for Newcastle.

£9M is a lot of money to pay out for one so young, but the 18 year-old certainly fits into the Newcastle strategy of buying players before they are at their best.

They can then  increase in value as they come on, mature  and reach their best, which seems to be what this lad will do in the future, and of course he could also become a world-class defender.

Comments welcome.

Ha! Whoever fabricates these stories, must just pick a figure out of a hat! £9m for a 18 year-old, playing in a not very affluent league, for a team who have been relegated, good un’.

Ipswich want 12 million for a 17 year old that is playing in a worse league and not even scored that much goals.

Teams want as much money as they can get for their players

We dont stand a chance a very impressive player at his young age, but just a Lil outta our way, would cost alot too for a youngster as Bayern,Man United,Chelsea been linked with him.

Good to see us linked with GOOD players for once.

Would rather spend a couple more million and go after Zapata (who can play anywhere across the back 4) than gamble 9M on this guy!

Can we not just wait and see who we get in rather than making silly articles saying were interested in everyone from everywhere everyday.

    It gets very tedious.

Colo has 2 years left on hi contract.

So we either offer him a deal asap or he’ll be sold in January or June 2012.

Varane would be a good buy for the future.

    The price is made up.
The top clubs can only buy so many young players and some prefer to play first team football.
In some respects we have a lot going for us.
We can attract young top players.

Perhaps the AC sale has whetted our owner’s interest in buying some quality stars of the future?

£9 mill for a 19 year old defender seems excessive, we alredy have Colo/Saylor/Simps/Jose(seems Pool also after Baines)/Williams and Tavernier/Kadar etc should figure next season.
Get Jose/Collo on 5 year deals.
Barton and Nolan on 3 year with 1 year further options and move on and then concentrate on new additions!!

Hey have a look at the Liverpool blogs- this one and more-the Liverpool fans are turning on Andy Carroll already-half are defending him like but there are some blunt and hurtfull comments aimed at him-cant be good reading for the lad-thats if hes even aware!-could he be eating humble pie and asking to come back before we know it?………not that it would happen-many are saying he simply doesnt fit in with their new style of play-some are a lot worse and saying hes slow and lazy-and not worth anywhere near his fee-tut tut-now now boys…..

@Mc-Toon … I agree it is a tedious and futile exercise writing and reading about possible targets.

99.9% are made up, and we all hope the club are playing their cards close to their chests with a surprise super-signing.

But managers and scouts are spotted in the stands watching targets so the odd one might be genuine …
Bu11shit detectors need to used at all times but it can be fun trying to guess possible buys.

FICKLE Liverpool fans. Carroll is only 22 years old, he is barely out of our academy. I can not believe they are slagging him that much. Carroll has made a huge huge mistake in for the sake of money. I would take Carroll back in a heart beat but at the end of the day he made his bed now he has to lie in it and get the fickle Pools fans on his side. Its not his fault he cost so much.

Also, love how the Scousers in Jim’s link think they’ve got a chance landing Aguero…

Surely until you know which of the current players are committed how do you know where to strenghen? Apart from 2xtop strikers which is a given.
There is also a question mark for me over Krull, decent shot stopper but for a big guy flaps at cross balls and decision making whether to stay on his line or not is iffy at best?

All Cwarr is saying is we are in ‘pole position’ to sign Gervinho but it rests on whether a bigger club comes in for him. Also states that both Drogba and Tiote have spoken to him advising him

For those asking about José Enrique. As of today, NO DEAL BETWEEN HIM AND LFC. A year left in contract,so great solution to left back prblem – Graham ballague talking about Jose, he’s usually spot on with spanish players.
