It’s been so long since Newcastle lifted a trophy that having a Newcastle manager even talk about winning one is kind of spooky.
Alan Pardew – hero is he can win a trophy
But that’s exactly what Alan Pardew is talking about today and he’s very realistic in saying it will take some time to get into the European Champions League, but Newcastle can concentrate on winning some cups.
Before we go too much further, for some of us older fans, I’ve looked up the definition of “trophy”, and here is one definition, just in case some older fans didn’t know what one was:
A prize or memento, such as a cup or plaque, received as a symbol of victory, especially in sports.
In retrospect, we probably should have played our first team in the Carling Cup this season, as Birmingham did and won the thing, even though they are now 4th bottom of the league and one of the worst sides in the division.
So it;’s possible to win the Carling Cup, although a bit harder with the FA Cup, since the top teams sometimes play their first teams in that competition. 😀
Earlier in the season of course, manager Chris Hughton had Premier League survival as the only priority this season, but with new reinforcements in the summer, Newcatsle should have a big enough squad to realistically try to win something after 42 years of a drought.
The last trophy Newcatsle won was the Inter Cities Fairs Cup back in 1969, a game I was at, and of course Bobby Moncur was the Newcatsle captain.
As far as a local trophy the last one Newcastle won was back in the 1955 FA Cup Final, and my late parents attended that game.
Newcastle won that game 3-1 against Manchester City and Don Revie – The Revie Plan – and we were a goal ahead within a minute, with a header, of all things, from the mercurial Jackie Milburn from a corner.
Alan talked again about focusing on the Cups:
“The thing we really need to bring into this club is two or three players who have real flair and can excite our crowd.””It is going to be very, very difficult, of course, to break into that Champions League position or push for Europe at this stage.”
“But it would be nice to play a brand of football that is suited to Newcastle, an attacking, front foot type of game-plan in every game we play and see where it takes us.”
“That’s the key because if we have a bigger squad, then maybe we can attack one of the cups.” “That’s probably the first thing on our agenda, to try to win a cup as soon as we can.”
“When I was at West Ham, we targeted the FA Cup and came within a whisker of winning it, so it’s not something I have lost focus on.” “The squad this year was really small and that worried me.”
” We didn’t, of course, set out to lose at Stevenage, but maybe on reflection, that result didn’t do us any harm in terms of getting a strong position in the league with the small squad we have.”
Newcastle have had a very satisfying season, and the expectations with Geordie fans is quite high at the moment, and it will be the icing on the cake of the lads can win their final game of the season at home to West Brom on Sunday.
Then the transfer market will get under way, and it seems Alan Pardew met with owner Mike Ashley yesterday in Newcatsle, and Alan had this to say about that meeting:
“Mike Ashley was here yesterday. We had a good meeting and we discussed some possible targets.”
“Mike will digest the figures and we will go from there.”
Any manager that brings that next trophy to Newcastle will be a hero, therefore no doubt about that, and it’s good to see that Alan Pardew is at least thinking positively.
You cannot win a trophy unless you think you can – and then put a plan in place to do so.
That’s generally how miracles happen.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #91I think the noises coming from insomnia are extremely postitive about us specifically.
The SS saying Pardew ruled us out of being interested is odd all he said is its unsavoury because we are linked with raiding a relegated team…doesn’t mean we won’t do it.
I hate SS news

Comment #96roe997 – u r ryt he has never said there was gonna b a takeover.
lets jus imaging for a minute that ashly n pardew were clever in jan window and knew they were getting 35mill for carroll n hav secretly secured deals for taarbt n nzogbia in jan for this summer which ive been thinkin for a while now.
we contact QPR n offer them routledge as part of deal for taarbt bt jus loan them routledge n let them keep taarbt till summer
then last day of window all the stuff bout zogbia comes out in last few hours what if we secured a summer deal

Comment #109We won’t be spending 12 mill on him that jan bid was from desperation not negotiation.
It all depends on the budget we have as to how much we will bid. 8-10 mill would be fair though I reckon

Comment #119Very diplomatic about Stevenage. The truth is he played basically our first team, they didn’t want to play a cup match in a season where we were meant to be surviving, and we crashed out accordingly.
Next year, give our youth/bench a run out in the cup games, let them prove themselves and have a laugh, they’ll want it more than the first team.
I’m definately warming to Pardew, hes seems like an alright bloke trying to do his best for the club. If he signs Cartlon Cole, that jumpship mother******* bassong, or Jermaine Defoe, I will be woefully disappointed in him. We are a club going forward, we want to sign quality, not the has beens from other teams.
I will NOT be waxing lyrical about Pardew if he signs any of them.

Comment #120Charles Insomnia was desperate to leave Newcastle. We sold him for 6 million. He is no better now than then. We would be crazy to buy back a traitor and even crazier to pay more than we sold him for. He was as pleased as punch when he scored against us a few months ago. he was desperate to score. Would Fergie buy back Ronaldo the second best player in the world? NO WAY. Insomnia is a twat. Manure is a club with certain standards which go way beyond our own. Thats why they win things. They will not buy back a player who does not really want to play for them. We should stay well clear of traitors.
