One of the many pleasing things about the Newcastle display at Chelsea last Sunday, was the good form of the Newcastle youngsters on show at Stamford Bridge.
Shane Ferguson challenges Torres on Sunday
Shane Ferguson, Nile Ranger, Sammy Ameobi and Kazenga LuaLua all showed distinct promise in the 2-2 draw.
And in addition to the above four, local lads Michael Richardson, Phil Airey and Greg McDermott are all pushing for a first team appearance, and may even feature in the game on Sunday against West Brom, which will wrap up a successful season for the Magpies in the Premier League.
Alan Pardew has often said he is not afraid to give the youngsters a chance when the opportunity arises, and the former Reading,, West Ham, Charlton Athletic and Southampton manager told the local Newcatsle press corps today:
“They have been in the right environment and they are ready to step in if needed.”“They are coming up from a development pool that is well looked after with people like Peter Beardsley, Steve Stone, Willie Donachie and of course John Carver and myself having an input into that.
“It’s not like they are coming into a group who they are unfamiliar with.” “If there is another chance for somebody to taste experience again, even with 10 minutes left, then I wouldn’t hesitate to do that.”
Shane Ferguson left the field in the second half with what looked to be an ankle injury, but he will be fit again for the game on Sunday.
And with Argentine winger Gutierrez out through injury, Shane will be making his 9th appearance for the first team out on the left wing.
Alan has today confirmed the 19 year-old top young Irishman will be ready to go:
“Shane will be fine. He’s a great example for any of the reserve team players this season.” “If more can follow in his footsteps then it will be great.”
We would expect Shane to get lots of appearances for the first team next season, somewhere on the left hand side of the field.
The once capped Northern Ireland International can seemingly play in a number of different positions, and he’s looked very good every time he’s played in the Newcastle first team.
