Newcastle Sign 18 Year Old French Midfielder

12:09 pm, Monday, May 23rd, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 52 Comments

There is news today that Newcastle have agreed to sign Mehdi Abeid, who was at French club Lens, as a free agent.

Mehdi Abeid - 18 year old French U18 International

The news is coming from the top and long serving Newcastle fan site www.nufc.com, and they are usually right about these things.

The 18 year-old attacking midfielder has apparently just finished a successful trial at Newcastle, and he was signed as a free agent, after Lens had released him.

Newcastle also signed another top French youngster last September, Yven Moyo from Sochaux, but the youngster was injured in his Reserve team debut late last year and has only recently returned – so we haven’t seen much of this top rated youngster yet.

Both Moyo and Abeid have both represented France at U18 level, and we think it’s good that Newcastle are bringing in top young players, whom they can then groom over the next few years.

It’s difficult to find out much news about players so young, but it seems clear Newcastle are concentrating their efforts in bringing French players to the club, since Chief Scout Graham Carr has concentrated his efforts in France all year.

Comments welcome.

Will this be another wonder kid who we destroy. What has happened to Harris Vuckic,he was supposed to be a “one to watch” in the Prem League this season,if he is fit why did he not get a chance yesterday instead of Smith(complete waste of space). We were 3 -1 when he came on,enough said.

what you on about kimbo how is vuckic fit he only just recently come back from a massive injury, and he’s young, do you really think its clever to put him in an agressive EPL game? deary me. Good signing, promising future. Was hoping for shaqiri though.

Well my hopes on Getting Lennon are dashed… Eden hazard has snubbed a move to the EPL and therefore Lennon is still first choice RW for Redknapp even if he is falling out of favour…

    http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/7698/5/belgian-wonderkid-snubs-liverpool-tottenham-and-arsenal?

Sigh… Lennon would have been a good signing..

  • 14 kimbo // May 23, 2011 at 12:41 PM

    Snubs…
Alan Smith had just come back from a serious injury, but I still think Vuckic is a far superior player to Alan Smith ,and would have benefited from a outing in front of 50K fans.

  • 15 G // May 23, 2011 at 12:42 PM

Back to the thread, anybody seen this kid play? Got to wonder why Lens released him?

  • 16 tynesidetommo // May 23, 2011 at 12:42 PM

Come on, Jose – stick with the Toon. We can only get better!

  • 19 Magpietillidie22 // May 23, 2011 at 12:48 PM

    tanmag -

Danny simpson has confirmed its a real account mate so…

  • 20 09nufc09 // May 23, 2011 at 12:49 PM

In the games i have seen ( chelsea and arsenal in the cup and a few reserve games ) vuckic has been easily our best midfielder, in the arsenal game he played a ball with the outside of his foot that xavi would of been proud of. People seem to forget that he is 18, he will be in our starting 11 within 2 year. With Vuckic, tiote, ben arfa, gosling, ferguson the futures looking bright.
b.t.w keep up ed i broke this news 2 days ago lol

  • 21 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 12:51 PM

We cant rely on Danny simpson, not after that nightmare of a second half mistake yesterday… ;)

  • 22 09nufc09 // May 23, 2011 at 12:52 PM

Jose is not back on twitter its a fake, simpson has not confirmed it.

  • 23 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 12:52 PM

Im surprised Newcastle have only been linked with one Right back…. i hope that pardew doesnt overlook that position…. Danny Simpson needs Competition at the very least…

  • 24 leazes upper // May 23, 2011 at 12:55 PM

never heard of this kid.anyone seen him play.

  • 25 Partizan // May 23, 2011 at 12:56 PM

I believe its a good signing eventhough he comes from the reserves, but considering his age he was probably knocking on the first team door.

  • 26 tanmag // May 23, 2011 at 12:56 PM

    Magpietillidie22 -

    Fake account chap

  • 27 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 12:58 PM

Btw when does the Transfer window open?

  • 28 Magpietillidie22 // May 23, 2011 at 12:59 PM

Vuckic is being nurtured to try and make sure he does become the player people expect of him. Dont forget he moved countries at a very young age to come here and settle on top of the fact he has been hit with a couple very serious injuries.

Must be deflating. But I’m confident he’ll be what people hope, as 09nufc09 says, when he has appeared he has shown glimpses of quality with his touch and passing ability

  • 29 NathanH NUFC // May 23, 2011 at 12:59 PM

    @darthkir

Lens got relegated from the Ligue 1 so im guessing they had to get shot of some players & his contract might have ran out.

  • 30 smithy434 // May 23, 2011 at 1:00 PM

Please say this isnt the international midfielder were supposed to be getting!?

  • 31 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 1:02 PM

Thats what I thought Smithy434… but apparantly a Fee has been agreed for that CM… and we got this fella on a free… so i dont think it is..

  • 32 leazes upper // May 23, 2011 at 1:05 PM

on vuckic he always looks good when seen him play.acadamy side reserves and in the cup games but he seems very injury prone.have to give him time to get FULLY fit

  • 33 Toon XI // May 23, 2011 at 1:18 PM

My god…how many midfielders are we going to sign????? Do they not realize we need strikers????

  • 34 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 1:21 PM

“And I can say that because he’s an international player – not someone who belongs to one of the bottom four battling relegation.”"

    Not Reo Coker.

  • 35 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 1:22 PM

    @ Toon Xi,

once we have 10 Central midfielders we will be fine. This Mehdi guy is one for the future…

  • 36 cousto // May 23, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Heard from Tiote’s milkman that the CM we’re bringing in is Jeremy Menez from Roma

  • 37 toonincheek // May 23, 2011 at 2:05 PM

    “Promising younster” “released by Lens”.

Hmmm. Obviously, they didn’t think so.

  • 38 stuart no9 // May 23, 2011 at 2:24 PM

i must have read the thread wrong, i thought it said AP was brining in quality players

  • 39 chuck // May 23, 2011 at 2:25 PM

    Nufc-mo
Arry has decided to keep Lennon !
Well thats a relief, he`s a bit like Jonas, tons of pace but little in the way of final product.

Scouting is not brain surgery, just got to check out the kids who make their international squads at various ages, not too many miss the cull.

  • 40 newcastle29 // May 23, 2011 at 2:35 PM

    @Magpietillidie22

thats a fake twitter account, i only follow real ones and that one was said to be fake by danny simpson!

  • 41 estechco // May 23, 2011 at 2:47 PM

    @newcastle29

Would that be the real or fake Danny Simpson?

    :o )

  • 42 Brutooon // May 23, 2011 at 3:16 PM

Patrick Van (the chelsea left back) just said on twitter he signed 4 yrs deal with Chelsea

  • 43 Nufc_mo // May 23, 2011 at 3:47 PM

    @Chuck

Imo he is better then Jonas… younger, English and as demonstrated against us twice this season, has a keen eye for goal…

    @Brutoon
Shame, i really enjoyed watching Patrick Van @ Newcastle during the Championship, was gutted that we didnt sign him

Van Aanholt and Ferguson down the left wing…

  • 44 xfer // May 23, 2011 at 4:07 PM

    David Villa… lol.

  • 45 andyeswecan // May 23, 2011 at 4:20 PM

I suppose I can’t blame everyone for their skeptical replies, but I don’t see how this signing can be anything other than a good thing?

Pardew should never have gone public with the “international midfielder” comment.

That can only ever end with having egg all over his daft face.

  • 46 bollokheed // May 23, 2011 at 4:45 PM

strolla hamahobi tries to get in sjp with a backpack on ,security guard says “scuse me sir ,what ‘s in your bag ” stolla replies “dodgy dvd’s ,counterfeit t-shirts,bit of hash ,why is there a problem?” guard says no sir ,thank f**k u avn’t brought your boots!

  • 47 BigKirky // May 23, 2011 at 5:18 PM

    Hope ur right cousto!

  • 48 gorskino10 // May 23, 2011 at 5:39 PM

Nice 18 and has represented the Youth levels of French national team, as a free agent why not he COULD be amazing, also could be terrible but its a gamble we need to take like we did with N’Zogbia etc..

  • 49 gorskino10 // May 23, 2011 at 5:49 PM

Well he is touted “Quite High” on FM11 but in real world Reserve Coach said in a interview he touted him as high as fellow acadamy players “Darnel Situ and Alexandre Coeff” who are extremely highly rated by Lens.
Len have one of the best Youth Acadamys around in France so he must have a bit of talent from what the scouts saw of him and for Free why not.
Lens wanted to keep him but he rejected terms saying he “Would try in England first”

Very Astute signing if true, but cannot see anything about it on the NUFC.com the link Ed put in description.
We will have to wait and see from offical confirmation soon.

What happened to that kid we had on loan from France a while ago, a picture was posted of him in carpark at the ground? did we sign him?

  • 50 newcastle29 // May 23, 2011 at 6:40 PM
