It was not a good way to end the season on Sunday, but that’s now over with – and Newcastle must push on this summer and significantly strengthen their squad.
Daniel Sturridge – would be great buy for Newcastle
Newcastle have been linked with some good players this year like Gervinho, Kevin Gameiro, Charles N’Zogbia and Daniel Sturridge, but have also been linked with rather ordinary and older players like Carlton Cole and Jay Bothroyd, so it’s not clear what class of player Pardew will bring in.
But the manager did make a point yesterday that it’s only quality players Newcastle are interested in, so we assume that excludes players like Cole and Bothroyd, even if Jay is a free agent and would cost nothing in transfer fees.
Steven Taylor, the star of the game on Sunday, admitted it was a disappointing way to end the season:
“It was disappointing just to let West Brom score one goal, so everything that happened after that was obviously a massive let-down,” “It was a sour note at the finish because that shouldn’t be happening, especially at home.”
“We wanted to finish on a high, in the top half of the table.” “The home form wasn’t what we wanted right the way through the campaign. We would definitely have liked to have picked up a couple more home wins.”
“Having said that though, people had us in the relegation battle at the start of the season, so we have to be fairly pleased with finishing 12th. We proved a lot of people wrong.
“We have to kick on and improve next season. The first target has to be finishing above 12th. The players are good enough to do that, and we have great team spirit. When we were in Ireland during pre-season, and as a team we agreed that the priority was avoiding relegation.”
“For our first season back in the Premier League, we have to accept that as a decent performance.” “We know how difficult a league it is, and we can be proud we weren’t one of the five teams fighting for their lives on the final day. It’s not a nice position to be in, as we know here at Newcastle.”
We have to look on the bright side, and try to put the disaster of Sunday firmly behind us, although it was still a terrible way to end what has been a good season for the club.
Newcastle will need to hang onto their best players as step one, and then bring in at least four top new players this summer.
And of course also bring in some younger players for the future, which we are already seeing, as 18 year old French U18 International Mehdi Abeid was recently signed.
Newcastle have the money available, and seem to have the will too, so now they need to go out and execute flawlessly in the transfer market this summer, and we could even end up with a really good side next season.
We’d love to see N’Zogbia and Sturridge sign on at the club this summer, because both have qualities that would significantly add to the Newcastle side.
