Newcastle Increase Bid For French International Striker

9:21 am, Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 44 Comments

We had an article out last Saturday wondering if Newcastle had increased their offer for Lorient’s Kevin Gameiro.

Kevin Gameiro – top striker target

And the news today is that Newcastle have indeed gone back in with an improved offer, which is  said to be £10M for the French International striker.

The news is in the Daily Mail,  and of course one sticking point is that the player would prefer a move to Spain, and apparently Valencia is now his preferred club, but it seems Newcastle are trying to get some big bids in quickly to price out the Spanish club.

While Kevin would prefer to move to Spain the news late last week was that he was also prepared to listen to other offers, and Newcastle will be hoping he will listen to theirs, but it’s clear he is a number one target for the club.

The Senlis born player has had a terrific season for Lorient and in 40 games has scored 23 goals, and in his club career he has scored 72 goals in 185 total appearances for Strasbourg and Lorient.

He currently has made three appearances for the full French side, and seems to be able to put the ball into the net from almost anywhere around the box, and the 24 year-old has scored some spectacular goals this season.

He would be a terrific signing for the club – if we can get him – and some good news today is that Spurs seem to have cooled their interest in the 5’8″ striker.

Let’s know what you think about this.

Comments welcome.

He would be a great asset for the club.
and he has a good striking record. aslong as we dont go spend like 20milllion on the guy i will be happy.

does anyone know how high the new bid is, or is this just confirmation of that 10million bid??

  • 2 Eaststander // May 25, 2011 at 9:27 AM

It all looks as if we are trying to get a big name over the line very quickly.let’s hope it happens this time, it’s been a long long time (excluding arfa)

  • 3 toonarmy09 // May 25, 2011 at 9:30 AM

News also in the journo that Gervinho had agreed to meet pardew this week !!! Pardew did say he wants 3 players to get the toon public out of there seat so maybe gameiro Gervinho and Menez may all be no1 targets ,if so that could spell the end for jonas as he won’t get in the team IMO !!

    Gervinho Benny. Menez

    Gameiro Frightening front 4 !!

  • 4 G // May 25, 2011 at 9:32 AM

Crikey, this one is being bandied about some credible sources (i.e. not twitter or transferrumours etc). Could this be actually happening, or is this to sell season tickets like the Rooney bid?

  • 5 geoff777 // May 25, 2011 at 9:33 AM

Nothing like competition for places …

It’s Nolan who I think will have the biggest fight to keep his place.

I hope Barton is our captain next season.

  • 6 davybtoon // May 25, 2011 at 9:39 AM

who ever said gervinho is a striker musnt watch football he is a winger
n from twitter arsenal n liverpool r intrested in gervinho but nothing concrete n tiote is playing a huge part in this deal
i think the club are acting early to try n get some deals done as ther longer we leave it with players like this we cud lose them
plus tiote n gervinho best mates which helps
n hba n menez best mates

  • 7 toonarmy09 // May 25, 2011 at 9:40 AM

Geoff777- agreed Nolan could struggle if we bring in Quality and also a couple of free eg seb larsson.can anyone tell if they have gameiro play much ?? I have seen Menez play for roma and would be great signing ,and Gervinho is also a very quick attacking player but haven’t seen gamiero play enough .

  • 8 Hoppefot79 // May 25, 2011 at 9:41 AM

    Now we’re talking…

  • 9 G // May 25, 2011 at 9:42 AM

davybtoon Gervinho can play as a striker, and has on occasion done so, but I agree, he’s much better at making runs from the wide midfield.

  • 10 davybtoon // May 25, 2011 at 9:42 AM

i love how if its in the journal or chronicle its gotta be true but if its from twitter it cant be, i wud jus like to point out nufc will give away any transfer news till its done, but the ppl on twitter broke this news b4 the papers so i believe twitter more if i had to

  • 11 davybtoon // May 25, 2011 at 9:43 AM

ryt off to work hope theres some info when i get bk in

  • 12 craigcoozy // May 25, 2011 at 9:43 AM

well nobody has arrived at hotel yet, which was full last wk so had to send that lens player to marriott, gosforth ! if we get gervinho, gamerio, menez, nzog i honestly believe we could attack champs league !!

  • 13 Stuart // May 25, 2011 at 9:45 AM

If all these moves and bids are to be believed it looks like we’re in for a very positive transfer window.

If we get one or two of these players in early aswell it may convince Bull to stay.

    Looking forward to this summer!

  • 14 Eaststander // May 25, 2011 at 9:46 AM

Gamiero from what I have seen is an excellent finisher very fast alert good positioning, its all to be seen wether he can handle English defences. If he really wants to go to Spain then may be he thinks he cant

  • 15 ShauNUFC1892 // May 25, 2011 at 9:48 AM

I cannot say if this player would be a good signing or a bad signing because I have seen nothing of him, however; this player’s scoring record looks promising and from what I have heard, I think it would be a brilliant signing for £10-13million. I would go crazy on the lad as I think we need other players too but this price would be a reasonable price for a player of his calibre.

  • 17 Eaststander // May 25, 2011 at 9:51 AM

One thing I would say if he is going to be the lone man up front joeys crossing would be useless he likes the ball at his feet

  • 18 Rotonda heights // May 25, 2011 at 9:54 AM

I would prefer to see a nimble skilful striker who can burst on to through balls with a bit of method in our build ups rather than an endless stream of hit and hope crosses and everything in the air. put it on the deck and let Ben Arfa etc thrive

  • 19 roshan MAGPIE // May 25, 2011 at 9:54 AM

if PARDEw is able to bring in gervinhio gameiro menez then ENRIQUE will stay for sure

  • 20 toonarmy09 // May 25, 2011 at 9:54 AM

Eaststander -cheers bud ,never watch Dutch football myself ,mr pardew better start polishing up on his French with all french (or French speaking) players ,I reckon Ben arfa has recommended a few of his mates to pards ,as in the article about the young lad we signed he said ,Ben arfa and tiote had both spoke to him selling the club !!!

  • 21 Rotonda heights // May 25, 2011 at 9:56 AM

The first thing you see simpson do it out wide is jsut lob it in hopefully rather than take a couple of paces and come inside and pass it on the ground in to the box.

  • 22 BonVoyageBenny // May 25, 2011 at 10:00 AM

If we do bring in this lad and Gervinho, I can see a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tiote – Barton centre mid, Jonas as a left winger, Gervinho on the right and Ben Arfa in a attacking central role, with Gameiro up front. 4 of those are french speakers. Would confuse the hell out of the opposition with what they are saying. Maybe get Joey to learn a bit of french?

  • 23 craigcoozy // May 25, 2011 at 10:00 AM

yes mate thats ma twitter al log in now, i only put big news on it like , to stop people copying my name on here!

  • 24 Eaststander // May 25, 2011 at 10:05 AM

May be Arfa was signed as a scout/player. The problem is unfortuatly with French players is sometimes they don’t take to the prem very easily.

  • 25 PoolieToon // May 25, 2011 at 10:09 AM

Definitely going in the right direction, I cant remember being this excited over a transfer window.

But I think the improved offer is still not good enough to land him, still a way under his value IMO and if Valencia is his preferred destination, they will be more inclined to match or increase on our offer, we should have put in for 12mill and that is still a bargin for a young and talented striker.

  • 26 nickybutttt // May 25, 2011 at 10:09 AM

it’s so early move. why pardew moves early is just enrique or barton, that will make each players keep at tyneside, but if gameiro rejects this bid, then it’ will be so complicate. but pardew will noe make improve bid, it’s not necessary, have to seek another target. that would be wise plan

  • 27 Stuart // May 25, 2011 at 10:12 AM

    PoolieToon,

Last I heard Valencia were in all kinds of financial trouble so I doubt they could beat any offer we made if we’re serious about getting him.

Also we have the benefit of paying fee’s up front, the club would much prefer a lump sum of £10m than the same or even slightly more over long term installments.

  • 28 Rotonda heights // May 25, 2011 at 10:12 AM

    Eastander

Yes: Henry, Viera, Cantona, Nasri, Deschamps, Ginola, Robert, Pires, Bernard, Distin, Petit, Evra, Gallas, Desailly, just couldn’t come to terms with the EPL…lol!!!!!!!!!!

  • 29 Rotonda heights // May 25, 2011 at 10:13 AM

    Poolie,

Did Valencia not just get taken over?

  • 30 Sir Alan // May 25, 2011 at 10:20 AM

N’zogbia/Menez, Gameiro, Sturridge (loan), Gervinho, Williams & young RB. SORTED- EPL TITLE HERE WE COME.

  • 31 tweaked // May 25, 2011 at 10:29 AM

landing kevin & gervinho will be the best signings since shearer

  • 32 PoolieToon // May 25, 2011 at 10:30 AM

Aye I do see your point but I’m sure we aren’t the only teams in for him. Im sure Spurs, Liverpool and the great unwashed will be sniffing around like they always are.

Agreed the cash up front is beneficial, but for safety I would do all I can to ensure the top target that will be wanted by some larger clubs signs for mine.

  • 33 ShauNUFC1892 // May 25, 2011 at 10:34 AM

We might have to change the way we play football for this lad. We like to cross, Joey likes to cross the ball and get it in for the head however; this lad likes the ball being played at his feet. Our way of playing may have to change a little if he is to be a lone striker. Just imagine this team:

    Tim Krul

    Daniel Simpson
    Steven Taylor
    Fabricio Coloccini
    Jose Enrique

    Cheick Tiote
    Joey Barton

    Gervinho
    Kevin Nolan
    Hatem Ben Arfa

    Kevin Gameiro

Now there’s a team that can be challenging for a Europa League spot. The league is that tight nowadays, you never know!

  • 34 The Entertainers // May 25, 2011 at 10:40 AM

Cracking news, two very good quality players. Would still love to get a third in and to be fair I’d be delighted with either Zog or Menez.
Believe Zog has more of a final product, but Menez is more fun to watch!

  • 35 nightfa11 // May 25, 2011 at 10:43 AM

great..gameiro, menez & gervinho..f***** A..but ure forgetting we recieved 57 goals this season..so defence is sth we MUST improve if we ever want to see europe.

  • 36 NathanH NUFC // May 25, 2011 at 10:53 AM

Well I must say, out of the top players we are linked with, im VERY satisfied,

    Being linked with the likes of;
    N’Zogbia
    Menez
    Gervinho
    Gamiero
Is looking very good, however I doubt we will be able to afford all of them… Even so, exciting summer ahead!

  • 37 The Eternal Optimist // May 25, 2011 at 10:54 AM

anyone else incredibly optimistic about the Toon these days? Love him or hate him Ashley is running the club properly and it is so refreshing to hear about us using existing players to aid the scouting efforts and to help close deals. We’ve got an academy producing the goods for the first time in many years, we’re on a sound financial footing and the future looks even better than the present. Well done Mike, Pards, the players and the fans who have stuck with this squad. Roll on 2011/2012!

  • 38 connor_nufc // May 25, 2011 at 10:57 AM

Of course we.will change the way we play. We owe only lump up up front cause weved had carroll and ameobi last season

  • 39 PoolieToon // May 25, 2011 at 11:04 AM

…and theres the problem of who I’m going to put on the back of my Toon shirt next season.

  • 40 Al-ToOn // May 25, 2011 at 11:10 AM

Valencia had to sell Silva and Villa to cover a small % of there massive debts! Mata will probably ahve to be sold as well.

Gameiro is brilliant £12m will definity get him signed up. We should do adds like £3m if he scores 15+ goals first season, that way we can get what seems a better deal for lorient and is good for us. if he gets 15+ goals £3m is nothing extra really as his market value is £20m+.

Possibly need a better RB as simpson wouldnt work in a counter attacking team. Hes got the pace but he cant soak up pressure for long periods. The whole defence cant full stop!

    —————-?——————
    ?——-Colo—–?——–Enrique
    ———Tiote——Barton
    Gervinho—Ben Arfa—N’zogbia
    ————–Gameiro————-

  • 41 nightfa11 // May 25, 2011 at 11:15 AM

Al-ToOn well said…our defence is not good enough for top 6…colo & enrique are good, but if enrique leaves..

anyway…i agree with u, but not sure if i prefer zog over jonas.

  • 42 Al-ToOn // May 25, 2011 at 11:18 AM

    nightfa11…

yeah jonas would still fit the system perfectly. Instead of spending £10m on Zog would be better spent on solid RB and Samba-like CB.

  • 43 davis_toons // May 25, 2011 at 4:35 PM

I hope the new have some truth in it.

  • 44 davis_toons // May 25, 2011 at 4:35 PM

    How defence?
