There is news in the French press today that Newcastle have gone in with an improved bid for Toulouse left back Cheikh M’Bengue
Cheikh M’Bengue – Newcastle increase bid to £6M
Newcastle put in an initial bid of £5M for the French U21 left-back in mid April, but that was turned down, and they were expected to increase their offer, and that was done today, according to French press reports.
That doesn’t auger well for Newcastle keeping Jose Enrique, whose representatives will meet with Newcastle officials early next week, at which time Newcastle are said to be going to offer Enrique a mammoth five year deal to star on Tyneside.
But it seems Newcastle are covering all their bases, and there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes this past week by Newcastle in the transfer market.
The 22 year-old full back looks a very decent player, and of the right age for Newcastle, he turns 23 in July, and is of Senegalese descent.
But no doubt Toulouse are only too aware that Newcastle have £35M to spend, and will try to get the highest price possible for their impressive French U21 International.
Whether the increased off will be accepted, we have no idea.
M’Bengue stands 6? tall, and has been with his hometown club Toulouse since he was just seven years old, and so far has made around 70 times for the club, and has represented France at the U21 level 12 times.
Frecnh clubs Marseilles, Lille and Lyon are also interested in M’Bengue, but no club other than Newcastle has so far bid for the player.
