The People today are reporting that Newcastle are still interested in Swiss International winger Tranquillo Barnetta.
Tranquillo Barnetta - again linked with Newcastle
Newcastle were first linked with the Swiss international last January, but he suffered torn medial meniscus in his knee when playing for Bayer Leverkusen, against second division league team VfL Bochum.
Tranquillo needed surgery for that injury but is now fit again, and since he has only one year left on his contract at the Bundesliga club, Newcatsle will be hoping to get a good deal for the player, who turned 26 just last Sunday.
Barnetta can play on either wing or as a withdrawn striker, and he has been linked before with a move to the Premier League.
Juventus were another club in January, said to be interested in the player who has 58 caps for Switzerland and 6 goals.
In January, his agent Barry McIntosh, who represents his interests only in Britain, confirmed there is interest in his client:
“I cannot name clubs, but there is Premier League interest and we are looking at the options,”
“But is also remains to be seen if Bayer Leverkusen are willing to let him go.”
The St. Gallen born Tranquillo has played 180 times with 23 goals for Bayer Leverkusen, whom he joined in January of 2004 from his home town club, St. Gallen.
The 5’10? player was an ever present in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, as the Swiss secured a finals place by finishing top of their group, and the player was also a regular in the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa last summer.
We don’t know if this is just a regurgitated story by the People, or whether Newcastle have now made a fresh approach to Beyer Leverkusen about the Swiss international.
We would think the German club would be interested in getting some deal this summer, rather than losing the player next year as a free agent.
Comments welcome.

6 Lee Dodd // May 29, 2011 at 10:42 AM
I Think There Is a Lot of Good Work Going On Behind The scenes at The Club at The Moment. I Think We lost Out on To Many Signings In January so They Have decided to really Go for it Early This Summer so The New Signings will Be Signed ready For the U.S Tour !!!!!!
7 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Yeah but we dont even know if cabyaye is definately coming til its confirmed davy!
I fully expect it to have gone through but I’d like it to be announced as soon as possible so we can gauge what the rest of the window is going to be like.
8 toonarmy09 // May 29, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Davytoon-agreed mate ,Gervinho apparently has the choice of 2 clubs ,one of which is us ,but agree the fact cabaye on his way and tiote here ,stands well with getting Gervinho !!off topic but does anyone know what’s going on with routledge and qpr ??
9 kilcline // May 29, 2011 at 10:45 AM
N zog wont come. My mate on twitter says so lol
10 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 10:46 AM
I would love it if it all came together like that!
Caybaye joins because HBA is here, Gervinho joins because Caybaye joins.
Suddenly we have three awesome attacking french players haha.
Howay, get it announced already!
11 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 10:48 AM
apperantly only 2 clubs in for gervinho n weve matched wages so it jus down to choice
cabyaye n tiote could say it
12 toonarmy09 // May 29, 2011 at 10:50 AM
If Gervinho has spoken to us ,a fee must have been agreed with Lille .looks like the fat man finally getting cheque book out ,about time we had something to look forward to .cabaye wS deffo the secret midfield so it seems ,and the player par dew said was 60/40 in our favour was Gervinho ,and Gervinho has said he has made his decision and will reveal presumably after Lille game tonight !!!! Hwtl
13 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 10:50 AM
We should have a class midfield next season like if everything comes off.
Cant wait to see who’s playing infront of them though. Gamiero or Shola haha.
14 GeordieGerman // May 29, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Strange that Ed, You can understand Leverkusen being interested getting a deal for Barnetta before he goes for nowt next year. But you can’t understand Ashley wanting to sell Barton.
15 Carl92 // May 29, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Cabaye and tiote would be an unbeleivable pairing of centre midfielder s like.
16 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 10:51 AM
stuart – think it will happen, but its the last day of the french season today so announced till after that
n jus think if cabyaye n gervinho sign then gamerio mite b like hold on sumthing special seems to b happening there
17 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Haha good point GG

Want Ba if he is on a free.
19 NottsGeordie // May 29, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Stuart
You gorgot about N’Zogesbia and Gamiero
As for Barnetta hes good but i dont think hes better than Gutierrez. Wouldnt want to spend too much money on him, no more than £5,000,000
20 splodge4nufc // May 29, 2011 at 10:52 AM
this would be a great signing , our midfield would be the best in the league by far, im pretty sure leverkusen would be willing to let him go considering he only has one year left and they would want to sell him off early as possible to bring in a suitable replacement
21 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Bang on there davytoon.
If we sign one or two quality players as soon as possible. Cabaye and Gervinho for example, its going to show all the other players we’re in for but may be out of our league that we’re on our way up.
Like Manc El Citeh but with less money and more heart haha.
22 BonVoyageBenny // May 29, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Tidy, this transfer window is putting a smile on my face. No more Karl Henry’s or Carlton Cole’s though, please…
23 Markaccus // May 29, 2011 at 10:55 AM
The People are reporting this? The same Sunday Comic thats linking us with Karl Henry? Can’t believe either really can we!

27 toonfan76 // May 29, 2011 at 11:02 AM
@Lee Dodd
I was just saying more or less the same thing on another thread. Imagine we could have all our dealings done before the tour, perfect for a great pre season, might give us a jumpstart at the start of the season. New players settled in and starting to gel. We can only hope this is the plan.
28 toonbelmonter // May 29, 2011 at 11:02 AM
a cant believe am the only 1 who would rather barnetta in over gervinho, barnetta is quality, n this was in 5 papers today so i believe its true, also read hes in talks after england game next saturday
29 samag // May 29, 2011 at 11:02 AM
i still want us to get piatti from almeira. relegation club. easy buy for 5m!!!

33 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:05 AM
question?
would u have barnetta over nzogbia
34 Stuart // May 29, 2011 at 11:08 AM
yep davy, theres still a question mark over Zoggys attitude/temperament.
35 toonruz // May 29, 2011 at 11:08 AM
may be we r going to get all of them ?
36 Crawfordladd17 // May 29, 2011 at 11:09 AM

Gosling-Like a new signing
Barnetta-New signing
Jonas-Started last season
Ben Arfa-Like a new signing
37 colwell // May 29, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Its funny that when teams sniff around our players eg Enrique on the cheap we all slag that team off and yet when we do it its a brilliant bit of business. Thats football.
Cabaye for 5m is so cheap, him and Tiote will be amazing together.
See somewhere it says we are stalling with Nolan now. In fairness with Benny, Cabaye and hopefully more Barton and Nolan would struggle to get in the team. If that was the case thats some squad to have.
38 toonbelmonter // May 29, 2011 at 11:10 AM
davybtoon m8 all i can say is F**K YEAH barnetta is class n skillfull, wiked free kick, no previous misbehaving n QUALITY would have him top of the list tbh like
39 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:12 AM
barnetta half the price of nzogbia aswell
40 toonfan76 // May 29, 2011 at 11:12 AM
All I can say is, there’s a lot of good noises about good quality signings, I just hope we can pull them off. I have a feeling this could be the most exciting summer we have had in years. If so, I have to say that the Messiah- Mr Keegan will have to eat his words. Loved Keegan but even the great one could be wrong about the 35 mil being spent.
41 Angryman the Angry fan // May 29, 2011 at 11:12 AM
You can by the skill to replace a player, bit you cant buy attitude and motivational skills!
This must be remembered in jb case!!
42 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:13 AM
colwell – thats what ive been saying if your signing players like cabyaye we will hav no need for barton n nolan
43 roshan MAGPIE // May 29, 2011 at 11:14 AM
my friend is a arsenal fan and i am a die hard NUFC fan we are nw CHATTING abt gervinhio that he will sign for either NUFC or gunners hope this will be an interesting one if gervinhio signs for arsenal then i wont be happy with him if he signs for us then my friend will hate him for nt choosing his club
44 colwell // May 29, 2011 at 11:14 AM
I would actually prefer to keep Routledge than sign Larsson. Routledge is a confidence player if our team is full of pace etc he`d be perfect to come on at the end for even more pace.
If and its a big if we signed Gamerio at 5ft8 we won`t exactly be crossing balls in will we just ball down pass and move something Larsson can`t do unless the ball is stopped.
45 Tonytoon73 // May 29, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Angry bang right mate
46 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:17 AM
the club are being very clever here aswel with nolan, barton, jose by offering them deals the players turn them down n think they have the power, but then we sign class players the club then say u wanna b part of this the orginal offer is still if not we dontneed u anymore
47 NUFC STEVE // May 29, 2011 at 11:18 AM
I thought the sun was gonna ‘reveal’ some signing 2 day?
48 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:19 AM
maybe gervinho has already decided on us n thats why cabyaye has come
49 colwell // May 29, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Davybtoon- thats it mate if we buy better than we already have subs bench they go lol.
Team morale wouldn`t be affected that much really, Cabaye-Ben Arfa and Tiote- Gervinho all similar age and everyone around the club would see we are going forward.
50 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:21 AM
ive gotta say i wont be to disheartened if we dont get gerviho bcoz i think menez is better n wud perfer him
51 Markaccus // May 29, 2011 at 11:22 AM
davybtoon, I agree with that, to an extent, the only point i’d disagree with is that its not the players stalling (in JB case certainly). I beleive its the Agents who try to play hardball with the clubs, although if what you say is true, it should still have the same effect.
52 Newcastle Madheed // May 29, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Barnetta’s goal to game ratio doesn’t look that impressive for the Swiss, and if he plays as a winger or a forward, surely we’ll have to bring in someone that bit better to score the goals? Well we will have to see after the Eng vs Switzerland match how good he is…
53 davybtoon // May 29, 2011 at 11:22 AM
add martin n barnetta aswell n there all very exciting midfield
54 colwell // May 29, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Lets face it since Carroll left Nolan has been poor, missing completely in most games. When Benny is back Nolan would have to drop back to CM and he is even worse there.
55 solano // May 29, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Angryman…..spot on…but I prefer your more angry diatribes…..this reasoned argument malarkey might catch on with the rose-tinters
56 Tonytoon73 // May 29, 2011 at 11:32 AM
FFS I am sick of people on here having sly digs at Nolan. He was our top goal scorer ffs and if it wasn’t for them goals we would be back in the championship and you’d not be able to talk about all these transfer rumours of class players we are supposed to be signing
57 solano // May 29, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Tony…well said…..people also seem to forget HBA will have to acclimatise to the Prem as well as get back to full fitness…..for people to just say get rid of the backbone of the team is Franco Baresi…..
58 NUFC STEVE // May 29, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Not to sound too negative but I think der was an article on here that gervinho only wants UCL football ( which he will have at Lille) yet we all think a Newcastle shirt with a number 9 on it and another Ivorian here will make us the most attractive place!!!! Waken up!!!!!
59 Angryman the Angry fan // May 29, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Get rid of Nolan and Barton and I would put my mortgage on the fact that whoever we realistically buy, the team will struggle!!
Lose them 2 lose the heart of Nufc football team!!!
Fergie takes a retired player everywhere with his team with ugly Neville . Why? He is the most inspirational/motivational player at the club Still!!
I find it amazing the amount of Ashley apologists on here who have sung the praises of Nolan and Barton all season and now coz fat man wants rid of the two players who can’t stand him, and for no other reason than that, they have become public enemies 1 & 2!! One thing to say to those slagging these to top players off…….baaaaaaaaaaaaa
60 geordiefinn // May 29, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Would prefer Barnetta over Zoggy. I know Barnetta is not known about his goal scoring abilities, but the guy’s workaholic! If we sign Gervinho, after that we really don’t need another same type of player, like Zoggy. Barnetta would be different in good way compared our current wingers and Gervinho.
And, Barnetta would be as cheap as Cabaye, and he has no bad history from Nufc like Zoggy.
Get Gervinho, Barnetta, Sturridge and Erdinc in and we are fine and challening the euro spots next season!!

Often young continental players take a season to settle. Some never really do (Vianna).
Can we afford to lose the gutsy fighters we have?

Vladimir Weiss !!!!!!!!!!!! Good at both wings
65 Toonfan8 // May 29, 2011 at 12:13 PM
its true, some players need time to settle, but can Barton, Nolan offer European football? i dont think so, they can offer us staying in this league, about 10, maybee 8 place…we need european quality here and Gameiro, Gervinho, Cabaye, Barnetta, they are real quality…Nzogbia, Sturidge as well….we have to bring some of them, if we want to attack top 6 in years to come
66 Angryman the Angry fan // May 29, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Geoff777, answer to that from majority of fans with a wee bit of common sense is a resounding NO!!
However, I’m sure the fat mike appreciation society will say the complete opposite. As we will be the ‘ new baRca’ with fat man in charge!

Agree with Tony Toon ….Nolan has been a super player for us and a massive dressing room influence, in what I think is the most committed NUFC dressing room i can remember in years. Credit to him for that, for his goals, and for his attitude. And just as I’m here, can I congratulate those horrible basturds at West Ham for getting Allardyce. The good news, is that he’ll sign good players as he did for us ( and never gets credit for ) , the bad is ……things like going to places like reading and playing for a draw, and then losing !!! Fat faced conceited tool!!!
