We watched the Lille game against Rennes yesterday, which ended in a 3-2 home victory for the French Champions, and French top scorer Moussa Sow scored a good hat trick for Lille – full name Lille Olympic Sports Club (LOSC).
Johan Cabaye - definitely joining Newcastle
And it was obvious when Johan Cabaye was taken off late in the game, that it was his last game for the club, although the TV commentators didn’t say he was going to a powerhouse club in England – Newcastle.
They didn’t say that.
And in a press conference following the game the successful Lille manager Rudi Garcia spilled the beans on his midfielder:
“Yohan announced yesterday to me first, then the whole group, that he has made his choice to join Newcastle. “
“It is a choice that I respect, although I would have liked him to stay with us.”
One or two of the French commentators seemed a bit surprised at the news, and we understand Newcastle have done a nifty deal in that they found out the skillful midfielder had a €5M release clause in his contract, so they paid around £4.3M for him.
For a player of his class that’s an excellent deal by Newcastle.
We learned a little bit more about the player yesterday – he can play in a number of different positions, but his penalty skills may not be everything they were made out to be, because he missed his last three penalties and Moussa Sow scored Lille’s one penalty yesterday.
It also looks like Gervinho is leaving the French club for around £10M, and Newcastle are in with a chance for this player.
The TV commentator yesterday said it would only be £10M for a player of his undoubted class, but that was because he only has one year left on his Lille contract.
If Newcastle can also get Gervinho, it would be terrific business for the club, as this lad not only scores goals, but he makes then too, and looks unselfish and a good team player – and very fast and the 24 year-old would get a lot of free kicks on the edge of the penalty box.
And Cabaye can smash those free kicks in for Newcastle.
By the way Gervinho is 24 today – his birthday.
The Ivory Coast International would be an exciting signing for Newcastle fans.
And if Newcastle could get Moussa Sow too, that would be even better, but he’s probably be very expensive right now.
Moussa finished the season as top goal scorer in France with 25 goals, by beating another Newcastle target Kevin Gameiro (who also scored yesterday too) to the golden boot by a couple of goals.
Moussa is also in his first season at Lille after joining them last summer from Rennes on a free transfer.
Cabaye is rumored to be going to sign a four year deal at Newcastle, and on Saturday the news was that it would be announced about the middle of next week.
It looks like Newcastle have got one player in the bag this summer, and when we’ve watched Johan he’s looked a very good technical player and he’s in the 26 man France squad that will play against Belarus in a Euro 2012 qualifier, and then the two friendlies against Poland and Ukraine.
Here is just one of the many UTube videos on Johan Cabaye.
Comments welcome.

Let’s sign up berbatov, worth a punt- will love it in front of 50,000+ Geordies.
Not only is he a Newcastle supporter, but he idolizes Shearer, the new number 9 for a couple of years maybe?

There’s a pic on twitter of Gervinho and soloman Kalou, they are good mates.
I recon Gervinho will hold on until arsenal table a bid so he can live in London near his mates rather than up here in Newcastle….
18 Toonboy_84 // May 30, 2011 at 9:39 AM
If we show enough intent/ambition do we reckon jose will sign up?
19 Nufc_mo // May 30, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Right, we need to prepare some chants for Cabaye for next season, especially if he does a tiote and comes out all guns blazing!

@Ronaldeano
He is also good mates with Tiote and Drogba(who was key in getting Tiote to join the EPL)

Wow, didn’t expect such a good start to a Monday morning. It really looks like we want to show our intent to the fans, current squad, and any other potential signings. Can only be a good thing.
Yeah, Berbatov used to sleep in a toon shirt with 9 Shearer on the back, and it’s rumoured today that Man U would let him go for around 12M. Could be worth a punt, at least we know he can score in the Prem, although not sure about his work rate?
25 Rotonda heights // May 30, 2011 at 9:48 AM

TBH Jose has been shocking these last few months and I have a sneaky feeling this M’bengue guy could be the real deal too.
26 Markaccus // May 30, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Get in, cabaye looks class.
Gervinho looks like he is coming, as he wants to join cabaye
Berbatov, even though he’s 30, would be a class signing, Toon fan, wanted to play here as a teenager, looks up to big Al, and is still a fantastic goal-getter. has a few good years left in him easy. That would be our foward line sorted, just defence left to do!
27 bills-son // May 30, 2011 at 9:48 AM
solano – one finger up to the Reo Coker, Carlton Cole, Ashley no ambition ransfer believers like you – 3 or 4 more fingers up to go.
Like I said to yesterday – the club now have an organised, structured transfer policy for the first time in my 50 years as a toon supporter.
I’ve been saying for months Ashley would spend and that I’ve got great confidence in the direction Pardew and the club are going. I reckon we’ll be top 6 potential next year with a team full of flair, speed and goals.
Like I said, 1 finger up 3/4 to go.

Regardless of work rate, any player that can score 3 hat tricks and become the first non englishman to score 5 goals in the same season is welcome at Newcastle in my books!
The fact that he idolized shearer and supported Newcastle is an added bonus!

Great news, following on the rumours of the weekend. Ashley may be a horrible owner at times, but this club is now run well financially, and whilst losing Barton would be a huge mistake, Newcastle clearly know how to operate in the transfer market and find good players at good prices. So hats off to Pardew and Ashley. Keep up the good work. Lets hope this guy “does a Tiote”

Yes, I agree with you 100%. He’s a natural goal scorer and that’s what we need. It’s often commented on great strikers that you might not see them for 89 minutes, but it’s that one minute where you do see them (sticking the ball in the back of the net) that counts.
Fingers crossed!!!

47 jj // May 30, 2011 at 10:03 AM
We need a top CB and put Saylor at full back for a few reasons, the obvious is to give Simpson competition and the other is if were signing all these french players and skillful playmakers were losing a lot of height in our side and could become vulnerable to set pieces again, i think we scored one of the most goals from set pieces last season so as well as getting pace into the side we cant forget how a lot of our goals came from either….. id go for this line up which i think is realistic…….
…………………………….Harps…………………………..
Saylor…………Samba………….Collo………Enrique
…………………Tiote…………….Cabaye………………
Gervinho……………..BenArfa……………..NZogbia
…………………..Ba/Sturridge/Gameiro
Id like a strong forward up front who can finish, but also hold the ball up
Id also Start with Joey Barton and bring Cabaye in slowly at first so not to throw him in at the deep end

Nolan

Samba is a player im sure everyone @ the toon would love, but highly doubt he will be coming here… Arsenal are interested in him, and he would also cost atleast 10mill

Barton instead of Nolan mate.
Imo sturridge is a huge possibility… Chelsea arnt much for playing youngsters… and with Neymar supposedly coming in…Too much world class competition for sturridge…

64 bills-son // May 30, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Rotonda heights – I think everybody is just hoping it’s all for real this time and not have all our raised expectations all come crashing down on us.
I agree marra – the difference now is that Ashley has decided (unless he gets a ridiculous offer) to keep the club and make a real go of it.
He got slagged off for not doing DD before he bought a club on the brink of bankruptcy (rightly so) and then after failing to persuade Redknapp to become manager (he wouldn’t have taken us down) he made another huge error in appointing Keegan. He brought in his own man Wise to keep Keegan in check and that just poured oil on the fire. Result – disaster, unbelievable fan abuse and relegation. He wanted out, couldn’t sell and then decided he was going to tough it out and make a go of it.
Since then IMO he’s done just about everything right. Hughton got us promoted, Pardew kept us up and kept the team spirit, Carr has sorted out the scouting, we’ve brought in HBA, Tiote and Gosling for peanuts, screwed LFC for £35M with £30M upfront in cash. That upfront cash allows us to pay cash upfront and bid less than clubs paying in stages. There is an obvious plan to bring in a nucleus of young talented French players – HBA, Cabaye for starters, N’Zogbia and possibly Gervinho or Gameiro to follow – which helps these guys settle in and start producing quickly on the pitch.
To me that is all solid proof that Ashley is now a man on a mission. He’s learnt from his mistakes, has a manager who he trusts and will back and this transfer window will reinforce that. Fans should give the guy a break and judge him on what he does now, not the mistakes he made in the past. We just might have one of the shrewdest, most ambitious club owners in the Prem. He’s also English and a proper football fan – unlike the Yanks, Sheiks, Russki’s, Indians etc., who know FAll really about the game and its traditions.
COME ON THE TOON !!
65 SL_toon // May 30, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Oh LOVELY!
I had my doubts about the Cabaye rumour. Based on the comments by fans and press in French websites, he’s good enough to be a barca substitute! Hence, I need to question his intentions in joining newcastle, but hey, it can only be good for us!
66 Weezertoon // May 30, 2011 at 10:16 AM
A front line this good is going to show how rubbish at defending Steven Taylor really is. I know I’m going to get blasted because he’s a local lad, and he scored 3 times in 3 games but I still think williamson is the better *underlined*DEFENDER. Staylor and colo don’t work well together, and staylor bombs forward way too much, you never see the top defenders rushing forward in open play like taylor does.
My suggestion? If you HAVE to play him, stick him at RB and let some real defenders cover the centre of the park.
You watch, next season taylor will prove me right as newcastle look shaky at the back.
67 jj // May 30, 2011 at 10:17 AM
I honestly think we could get Samba if we tried, even more so if Arsenal dont go for him, i really wud not like to see Gosling at right back but then again i havent seen him play there, the only players i can see getting a game consistantly enough to be captain is Collo, Saylor and Harps
IF we dont get NZogbia theres lots of similar players that could be possible, i know theres a lot of quality in europe but i like proven players like Jarvis or Hoilett

Everyone makes mistakes. Some more than others nufc_mo. it’s about picking the best man for the job at CB, and williamson and colo are definately the better partnership. Bills-son: you are talking rubbish. Ashley has ruined this club. Every player he buys is young because he wants to sell them on for a profit. We are a business to him and he is using the club to make money not please the fans.

Kilcline: how many games have we won in the premiership since Nolan signed but hadn’t played? Answer 0 out of 13.
We need Nolan and Barton both to play. Since when have a team full of foreigners been successful? Every top premiership team has an English core and we need one too. Can’t believe fools on here who are suggesting teams without Nolan and Barton

97 ilovetoon8788 // May 30, 2011 at 10:34 AM
The only way Gervinho will come to us, is if Ashley can guarantee him he’s going to bring quality players to challenge for European football next season. He’s not going to come to us if our target is a top 10 finish. So if Gervinho comes, there has to be a clause that says if we don’t get a european spot he will be sold to a european league club.
If Gervinho does come, we can expect more quality signings and that means abandoning Ashley’s very rigid transfer policy and his ’5 year vision’ for our club. We have to bring in players who will expect wages around 60k like Nzog, Gamiero, Sow and quality defenders to prove to Gervinho we mean business.
I just can’t see this happening. Sorry to burst the bubble. I still see Gervinho going to Arsenal.

Arsenal mate…
99 toon_tomma // May 30, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Nufc_mo – Yer mate agreed that abramovic just buys for the fun of it like so a think sturidge could be on our list plus he can score goals as we seen for bolton so stick him in a half decent team that can get balls into him he will score more than he miss a think could be a gd buy when u said about Neymar like mate, see the only think is the GK situation for me mate even thou Krul is young he is a bit hit and miss like iv watched that forster all last season and he controls his box and area and can see him given a chance plus he is a english man and can u remember what pardew said about krul at stevenage he wasnt to happy with him, so a can see Forster getting a good chance like a hope so SPL aint the best league and football but still he did really well. and Saylor but be gd right bk but would need another CB in a think and Willo on bench. any targets for CB you would go for a think should maybe go for that Scott Dann of brum he was really good a thou and young
100 kilcline // May 30, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I would rather Barton over Nolan any day.
I would go with S Taylor and Barton to be our English grit. Just don’t rate Nolan enougn outside of the box. Adds very little else.

And when he signs good young players you say he’s doing it purely to sell on and make money? When he’s already a billionaire?
Go back to school a stick in this time.

Haha, hopefull!
The lad himself has said he loves it at Chelsea, but would much rather prefer First team football, which we can obviously offer
133 The Entertainers // May 30, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Fantastic news, looks like another bargain regarding his price ( imagine what he’d cost if he was English and just won the PL ? £10 million plus? )
However it looks like Barton is being shown the door. Will ‘be’ interesting if he’s still here next season whether Pards plays him or if the big lad interferes with sqaud selection ( I hope not and don’t believe he would, but we’ll see how strong Pards is )
Tiote and Cabaye has the potential to ‘be’ the new Petit and Viera and Gervinho looks so similar to Henry in his younger days.

he meant to say, nobody else will be going AFTER gervinho.
138 Stuart // May 30, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Munster Mag, I think the lille manager just said Cabaye was the only player free to move as he had the minimum fee release clause in his contract.
I dont think they stand much chance of keeping Gervinho and probably Sow.
139 The Entertainers // May 30, 2011 at 11:40 AM
The gervinho situation is different from Sow, as Sow has a number of yrs left on contract after signing last yr, Gervinho is in his last yr and have to cash in now if they want big bucks

its Cabbage.
Guys
Do you reckon if we sign Gervinho, we should stop out interest in Gameiro?
I honestly think it would be better for the club to go after Sturridge instead of Gameiro, if we did sign Gervinho…
I totally 100% agree with those who say that we will need EPL experience in the squad, and if we get Gameiro rather Then Sturridge (after signing Gervinho) we will lack EPL experience in our attack…

Totally agree, we need a blend of PL experience and foreigners, spread the risk.
So sturridge for me over gameiro, if we bring in Cabaye and Gervinho, whereas if we bring in Zog then happy with Gameiro.
This would be my potential line up (if players stay and we sign our main targets)…..obviously if barton/enrique go we’ll have to find replacements….
