The news that Lille’s Johan Cabaye has decided to join Newcastle United, got the Magpies off to a very good start in this summer’s vital transfer window.
Gervinho – another Newcastle target
Now Newcastle will hope to capture Cabaye’s team-mate Gervinho soon, and yesterday the local Sunday Sun newspaper said that Newcastle officials were confident of getting Gervinho, although one other club is also involved in trying to sign the Ivory Coast International, who is 24 today.
Apparently the situation is that Gervinho will make his choice following the Ivory Coast game African Nations qualifier against Benin next Saturday.
Newcastle fans have welcomed the signing of Cabaye, but they will be delighted if Gervinho is signed, since he’s just the type of exciting, fast and skillful forward they just love on Tyneside.
Gervinho has both scored goals and made goals for the French Champions Lille this season.
Lille coach Rudi Garcia however said after yesterday’s 3-2 win against Rennes that nobody other then Cabaye would be leaving the club:
“They are all under contract,” “The only one who can leave is Yohan Cabaye. All others are under contract and, if desired, will be in the squad next season.”
But that doesn’t seem to hold too much water, since Gervinho’s contract runs out next summer, and the French Champions are hardly going to turn down a £10M offer for the player, which is what is estimated he’ll bring in the transfer market.
Newcastle have also reported to have made bids for Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro, Toulouse left-back Cheickh M’Benque and former Newcastle winger Charles N’Zogbia over the last few days.
So Newcastle certainly seem to have done their homework this year and there seems to have been a lot of work gone into transfer bids already, and it’s still so early in this summer transfer window.
That adds up to so far so good for Newcastle fans who are hoping to see around five top players arriving this summer, with the money the club received for the Andy Carroll transfer in January.
Comments welcome.

A fantastic start to the transfers. I hope there is more to come at the same standard
6 Spuggy // May 30, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Brilliant capture, one winger and midfield sorted.
Then we MUST bring in some top class strikers and it’s job done on the offensive side. Gamiero, Gervinho, Sturridge, Zog – would all be great signings, although I’d prefer not to go for zog but wouldn’t be displeased if he signed as he’s quality and had goals in him now.
Another quality CB/RB wouldn’t go amiss, but would be happy with a young star with potential.
C’mon get some deals sorted soon, this will encourage other players to sign……hope this window turns out like we all want it to because it’s about time – all the fans deserve it for the misery that was the carroll saga, and now the enrique/barton saga.
Everything crossed!!
7 partizanovec // May 30, 2011 at 12:44 PM
So, our first acquisition is CM player. Hardly the line where we lacked players, but for this price, I think it is good capture. Now, left back, right back, right winger and one striker at least.
8 Magpies-till-d3ath // May 30, 2011 at 12:44 PM
If we can snatch Gervinho, I believe we’ll only need 1 or 2 more signings of that quality to reach top 7, which in most seasons, would get you into Europe. If we can get into Europe, we could attract players of even higher quality.
9 Robby Bobson // May 30, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Linked with hoilett….to be fair hes been a different class in that blackburn team this season.
Scored some wonder goals and has pace to burn.

Spuggy, who is the winger you talk about?
11 Spuggy // May 30, 2011 at 12:49 PM
I was just saying we need a winger. I’d like to see gervinho on the RW, think there’s a chance now his team mate has signed and rfa is here already. Then Arfa on LW for me, I know Pardew said play him as 2nd striker in the hole but I think we lack attack on LW and goals.
Wouldn’t be dissapointed with zog of course, but its a bit like a dog returning to it’s vomit lol.

Well said Etennal Optimist. I still dont quite trust Ashley, but he’s no mug with the money and our signings are more measured and intelligent than for many years. Too many goons on this site find negatives in everything. That said, messing Joey Barton around after such a contribution this year is daft.
18 geoff777 // May 30, 2011 at 12:59 PM
You always need more CM’s, it’s an area that is vital and we must have more strength and depth there.

20 The Eternal Optimist // May 30, 2011 at 1:03 PM
lol i don’t trust any footballers or people in business for that matter! People talk like we need an oil barron billionaire Jesus as an owner. I like Mikes lack of sentiment- there is no place for it in business or sport and we as a club have made some bloody awful mistakes because of sentiment.
Joeys been great for us this year, well better than the years in court and jail while we paid his wages, but noone is bigger than the club.
21 ToonDownSouth // May 30, 2011 at 1:03 PM
Guys, we haven’t signed him yet. there’s still a distinct possibility of a club coming in at the last minute – and I can think of a lot that are more attractive propositions than us!
Just saying – don’t get too happy until he’s stood next to Pards, black and white all over, and grinning for the cameras.

Berbatov and Gervinho up top = goals
24 geordiefinn // May 30, 2011 at 1:05 PM
I agree with toonbelmonter.
Players like Guthrie or Smith just aren’t good enough to take us to europe.
Also, we lacked creativity last season remember, and we were forced to play Raylor and Colo as CM.
Now bring on Gervinho and Sturridge!

how are we mucking Barton about ? he w nted a contract and we offered him one. it’s just his scumbag of an agent says it’s not long enough. but who in their right mind gives a nearly 29 year old a 4 year contrct. if he had signed the contract offered he would effectively be here another 3 years in any case and there is always the option to extend.

Glad to see Ashley’s plan coming into fruition. If these transfers come off, expect some fast, free flowing football next season.
Will be sorry to see Barton go, but after all the trouble he has caused the club he should have accepted whatever the club offered him, and should also know to keep it zipped and not shout off to a room full of reporters.

Really nice on paper … Pardew needs to learn French.
36 geordiefinn // May 30, 2011 at 1:13 PM
I think Barton deserves to be on the transfer list, because of yesterday.
Is he really 28 yrs old? He is very immature. And his reaction about Cabaye?
I think Barton has to go now, he’s not getting a new contract now and if he stays, he’s going to sit on bench. Barton’s going to ruin team spirit if he stays.
37 The Eternal Optimist // May 30, 2011 at 1:13 PM
in fairness after AC went he was average at best. See you Joey, it’s been emotional. If he stays I’ll be happy enough but using twitter to slag off the owners along with “I’d better be careful here, they are my employers” is as unprofessional as stubbing a fag out on an academy kid for me!
38 tomnewcastle // May 30, 2011 at 1:16 PM
How is Nolan our captain and leading goalscorer going to fit in if Cabaye is expecting to start?
39 NottsGeordie // May 30, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Mike Ashley has done nothing wrong with the Barton situation. We offered him a contract he rejected and just expected to get a better contract. No fooball player is bigger than the club and this is what Barton is starting to think. If Barton really wanted to stay at Newcastle he could og signed in January.

We could either play 4-3-3 with Cabaye, Nolan and Toite in midfield or Cabaye can easily sit on the bench for a while. Hes never played in the Prem and it takes a while for Foreign players to get used to it. Thats what the scums did with Gyan. He was used as a sub for the first half of the season.
44 NorseToonBrann // May 30, 2011 at 1:23 PM
i actuallly believe we’ll get those players. sebastian larsson hahaha i laugh at those rumours. watch out barca, here comes the magpies:-)
45 Brutooon // May 30, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Cabaye is a hardworking midfielder, he is a combination of Barton and Nolan.
He can distribute the ball better than Barton (long or short passes). And he seldom gave the ball to the opponents (like Xavi who love to keep the ball)
Cabaye also love to run from midfield like Nolan.
Therefore we replace a two 28 yrs old with a 25 yrs old? GOOD Business !

Definetely top-8 team:
——————Harper
Simpson—Saylor–Colo—Enrique
————-Cabaye–Tiote
Gervinho——-Nolan——-BenArfa
—————–Sturridge
I think Cabaye-Tiote partnership will be awesome, Cabaye as a box-to-box player and Tiote as a midfield’s anchor = they complete each others. Also, both are speaking French, so communication is easy.
I would keep HBA on left, because otherwise Nolan would have to be on bench, and we definetely need our captain on field.
Wouldn’t mind if Pards signed a new RB, like Micah Richards…
54 NottsGeordie // May 30, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Were going for French players because they have much better value for money.
Gervinho would cost about 15 million if it werent the last year of his contract.
Ashley Young is going to Man U for 15 million. He isnt even a regualr for his country.
Connor Wickham will cost over 10 million and he plays in the championship.
Kevin Gamiero costs 10 million and scored 22 goals in the French league last season.
Much better value in France
55 nufc90 // May 30, 2011 at 1:35 PM
barton has no right slagging ashley off.. ashley stood by him when many people wanted him sacked after the trouble he caused. for barton to then go slagging him off it’s a joke…ashley had every right to withdraw the contract offer, very unproffessional of barton.
and the comments on his twitter are obviously deliberate to try to stir up the fans but i think he’s using it to make it like they forced him out when he’s sold

I am so happy that it’s an almost certainty that we have signed Yohan Cabaya. He said he’s leaving for us and so did his coach. I think he’s pretty much in the bag.
I saw Lille play last night and what a fabulous team they have! Sow and Hazard were the best players on the pitch. Then Cabaye and Gervinho were the next best on the night. Cabaye gave one or two assists on the night and looked very comfortable on the ball and can pick a pass out of nowhere. He reminds me a bit of Xavi of Barca. Gervinhgo on the other hand did not really impress me. He looked lazy and did not fight much for the ball. On the ball he demonstrated good skill but for me the best player Lille have is Sow and Hazard without a doubt. Sow got a hat-trick but a big thanks must be given to Gervinho as he could have scored himself and purposely laid the ball inches out side the goal line so his teammate Sow could grab his hat-trick. It was a great team display and it’s little wonder why Lille have won the league.
Newcastle have got a great coup in Cabaye and he got a standing ovation as he left the field on 87min. Perhaps the signings Cabaye and Gervinho will be revealed together and we are only waiting for Gervinho to make his decision.
The transfer business has started earlier than ever and credit must go to the board and manager for finally be the first to move in the transfer market.
The future is bright the future is Black and White!!!!

60 solano // May 30, 2011 at 1:53 PM
nufc90…..the club actually looked into cancelling Barton’s contract and found out it was a legal minefield…. they would have snapped the hands off anyone who made them a decent offer at the time of his troubles, but there was no-one willing to do that….it was, in the end a simple business decision that we couldn’t afford to write off a £6m investment …..as for him going too far, I don’t think his tweets have been that offensive…..he’s only saying, in his inimitable Joey style, exactly what Harper and Nolan have been saying for at least a year…..and if you ever did have the chance to meet him, you would find it isn’t just a cheap attempt at populism on his behalf, he has a genuine passion for the club and craves success…..hope he sticks around for at least another year because we will most certainly need him…
61 nufc90 // May 30, 2011 at 1:57 PM
i’m not so sure… maybe he does genuinely care but you have to wonder whether it’s wise knowing ashley and co. are gonna see whatever he tweets about the club. the fact his agent is always in his ear aswell doesn’t help. still 1 player is no bigger than the club…if he really wanted a contract he’d just get on with it play his heart out this year and hope they offer him one

The top teams generally see each game as a win and play accordingly and so should, we play all games as if they were home games and have a bench that is able to make a change if things do not go as planned.

I am happy too at the moment, but If Jose Enrique isnt staying then the club will struggle. Barton will definetly leave and Nolan will probably follow. The same about Guti and the worst is if Colo also been unsettled! When should Newcastle offer Enrique the new very, very good bumper contract?
