Newcastle Again Linked With Shane Long

The news today is that Reading will be willing to sell their star striker Shane Long, now that they will remain in the Championship next season.

Shane Long – Reading will sell him this summer

But they will be hoping they can get at least £4M for the player who scored 25 goals in 50 appearances for Reading last season.

Newcatsle have been linked with the player before, but we’ll be linked with any striker that becomes available on the planet this summer – let’s be honest.

Clubs said to be interested include Liverpool, Everton and Celtic, as well as the Magpies.

Owner Madejski said this today about Long today:

“I’m aware of Celtic’s interest in Shane Long,”

“We are still to hear anything official from Celtic, but it’s obvious they are interested. How confident am I we can ward off Celtic’s interest? Not very.”

“It’s sad that we didn’t get promoted because Shane would have liked to stay at Reading if we had reached the Premier League. But that has changed because we will be in the Championship.”

Any of the Premier League clubs will have more financial muscle than Celtic, with even the two Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic not too flush with money these days north of the border.

It turns out that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is good friends with Royals manager Brian McDermott, so that would be an advantage – if Newcastle are indeed interested in the player.

But Newcastle were yesterday linked with both Dimitar Berbatov and Demba Ba, and have already had a bid accepted for Lorient top striker Kevin Gameiro, so whether Shane is a top priority at Newcastle, we just don’t know.

What do you think about this player?

@ @charl_boy as i said the other day, barring a absolute siesmic shift, he is joining NUFC. If im wrong then I will put hands up!

If he gets this wronmg, his credibility (whatever that may be) would be totally gone!!! If he is right, well…

Shane Long is not the best striker around, but he would be a good impact player from the bench, not worth 4m though.

Ofcourse he aint worried! We havent been linked with any Rightbacks yet!

Article also contains News on Gameiro and Gervinho, stating we are unlikely to get both. Implying we get one, we stop interest in the other?

    Thats my interpretation.

Apparently Newcastle have made bids for 5 players, including Gameiro (10m) and Gerviniho (10m). However I heard from reliable sources that we would not be signing both.

Perhaps I haven’t seen enough of Long. Every time I have seen him play he looks decidedly average Championship striker. Yes, he’s been prolific at that level, but I haven’t seen anything that convinces me that he is worth £4M and that us Liverpool and Celtic (well, maybe Celtic?) are sniffing around him.

We probably won’t hear anything from NUFC until a player we are bidding on signs for another club. The reason for that is we will deliberately have offers in for more players than we are prepared to buy so that we can play one club/player/agent off against another. That is good negotiation practice.

NUFC might be making big noises about Gervinho for example when the real prime target is Gameiro. They might say to Gameiro – we’ll offer you £60K a week but if Gervinho signs first your deal is off. That type of tactic goes on all the time – agents and clubs do it is as well. They’ll say Spurs are in and if you don’t up your offer from £50K a week to £60K we’ll sign for them. Half the time it’s BS – name of the game though.

One thing is for certain though – Ashley is used to playing poker for big stakes. He’ll keep his nerve and won’t be done over. We’ll win some and lose some in the transfer market – you gotta remember we aren’t Barcelona or ManU or Aresenal and the ambitious skilful players we want to sign will always be tempted by title chasers and CL football.

What we can promise though is a first team place and we can prove our ambition by letting them know who else we are after.

So patience lads, patience. I have no doubt that behind the scenes Ashley and Pardew are working their b%ll%x off to bring home the bacon.

    We’ll find out soon enough.

My gut feeling is that Gervinho was always holding out for a move somewhere else; he’s been trying to engineer a move Arsenal for the last couple of seasons anyway! The prospect of playing CL or Europa in Spain, I guess would be too tempting for him.

We’ll just have to work our way down Carr’s shortlist – Gervinho was obviously high on it.

I’m pretty confident we’ll have at least one new striker in time for the first game of the season. It would be utterly diastraous if we didn’t. Who that will be though, is anybody’s guess.

Hainsey – What source is that comig from, fella?

Would love Shane Long, he is a fantastic player. Has great movement and his finishing is different class. I think it is only a matter time before he steps up the the PL and if it isn’t with us we will be ruing the decision in a few years.
