The Newcastle Journal is reporting today that Newcastle have turned down an opportunity to pursue Senegal international left-back Boukary Drame.
Boukary Drame – Senegal International left-back
The 25 year-old 6′ Sochaux player had had a very good season, and it seems his four year contract he signed in 2007 is ending this month, and he’ll be available as a free agent in the summer.
This week Newcastle are supposed to be meeting with Jose Enrique’s agent, and presumably Newcastle have elected not to go after Drame, because they think there is still a chance of nailing down Jose to stay at Newcastle.
That being the case, Newcastle wouldn’t need to bring in another left-back, with young Shane Ferguson showing this year he is already a suitable deputy for the Spanish U21 International.
Clubs interested in Enrique are said to be Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Lyon, with AC Milan also said to be interested in the player, at least initially.
If Newcastle rate Enrique at £15M and will not accept less that that for a player whose contract expires next summer, they will find it hard to unload Jose.
But maybe that’s Newcastle strategy, although if Jose doesn’t sign a new contract, the club will bring in another left-back to play in the first team next season, and then try to sell Jose for as much as they can get later this summer – rather than lose him next season for nothing.
Apparently some preliminary talks have already taken place between Enrique’s advisers and Newcastle officials, but we wonder how long this will go on, with Newcastle still not knowing if Jose is going to stay or go.
At some point the club will have to fish or cut bait, and decide whether they will keep Jose or sell him, depending on how the contract negotiations seem to be going.
Drame joined French club PSG back in 2000, before moving to Souchaux in 2007.
The 25 year-old Senegal International is a free transfer, and would seem to be a good deal for Newcastle, and of course they have also made a £6M bid for Toulouse 22 year-old left-back Cheikh M’Bengue.
