Newcastle’s Ireland International striker Leon best is now fully fit again and raring to go next season.
Leon Best scores great header against Birmingham
Leon came in from the cold in January in rather sensational style, when in his very first Premier League start he hit a hat-trick at home against West Ham United.
And he went on to score 6 goals in 12 appearances for the Magpies, with 9 of those being starts.
He was able to help Newcatsle cope with the loss of big striker Andy Carroll in January, and before he went down with an ankle ligament injury, he had looked the best of the remaining Newcastle strikers.
There was also news this morning that Birmingham are interested in Leon, but we expect Alan Pardew will keep the 24 year-old at Newcastle and hope he will improve further next season.
Leon showed significant improvement under Alan Pardew earlier this year, and has 6 goals in a total of 25 appearances for Newcastle so far.
And why would Leon want to move back to the Championship and Birmingham City, when he has proved he can score goals in England’s top league?
Leon also showed terrific character this year as most of us had already written him off when he hadn’t scored for Newcastle through last year.
And Best was even becoming a favorite with the Newcastle fans, as he scored some very good goals for the side.
This is what Leon told the local Newcastle press corps today:
“The season ended at a bad time for me – just when I was coming back to fitness.” “Everybody will get their chance to impress in pre-season.”“
I can’t wait to go to America in pre-season, it will be good for me and good for the team.” “Long trips are always a team booster. It will do us all good to get out there and we’ll all enjoy the trip.”
“I trained towards the end of the season and obviously played in the last game, and things were very good.” “It was a great way to end the season after some injury problems.”
“Now I just want to be ready for next season.” “I just want to be in the right frame of mind, getting fit and challenging for the team again.”
Best had big injury problems last season, and they were to do with his ankle ligaments, and an operation was nectar on the ankle in April, after the usual injections finally failed to work.
And Leon was not expected back last season, but he did come on in the second half in the last game of the season against WBA.
Hopefully, those problems with that ankle are now over, and he can have an injury-free season next time around.
“There was floating bone in there meaning I had to get injections before games after coming back.” “But in March the injection didn’t really work so I had to go for the op to get it sorted out.”
“I have proved to myself, and others, that I can score in this league.” “It’s really about staying fit and continuing that.” “I may not have played a lot of games, but when I did play I was in the goals.”
“Whenever anybody is in doubt I can look back at it and gain confidence from it.” “We can only add to what we have already achieved, that is certainly the aim.
“Maybe we can even aim a bit higher. We can only be optimistic at this club.”
It will be really interesting to see if Leon can continue his improvement on Tyneside, and even though new strikers will arrive in the summer, this lad could still get plenty of games for Newcastle next season – we hope so.
