I will not have been the only Newcastle fan, to see the irony in some of today’s news.
Jose Enrique – If Liverpool don’t want him – Magpies don’t need new left-back?
Celtic have a left back who seems really good, and he’s Honduran International Emilio Izaguirre, who seems to have had a terrific season north of the border, in his very first season playing outside of the Honduran League.
And since Newcastle have recently given up on Cheikh M’Bengue of Toulouse, they are looking for another suitable replacement for Jose Enrique, if he joins Liverpool in the summer.
But would you believe another club that is presumably after Izaguirre is ………… Liverpool.
But Newcastle are only interested in Izaguirre, as cover in case Liverpool sign Newcastle Jose Enrique in the summer.
Maybe Newcastle should ask Liverpool who their top left back target is, and if it’s Izaguirre, then maybe Newcastle can keep Enrique and stop looking for another left-back.
But it’s not quite as simple as that, as Liverpool are not the only club said to be after Enrique, as he’s also been linked with Bayern Munich, Manchester United and even French club Lyon.
But Newcastle are also savvy in the transfer market these days, and will not take peanuts for the Spanish U21 International – they will try to get as big a fee as they can for him if he indeed wants to leave.
And there is a report today that Kenny Dalglish will be given enough transfer funds, by the new American owners, headed by John Henry, to bring in his number one targets this summer.
And the report suggests Liverpool are willing to pay £15M for Jose, and if that’s true, then that bid will not be turned down by Newcastle.
Remember the club also has a certain youngster called Shane Ferguson, who filled in for Jose this year in excellent style at left back.
It’s surprising to us that a club would pay £15M for a player who would be available on a free transfer next summer, but there again they paid a massive £35M for Andy Carroll, and £30M of that in cash, and a sell-on clause is in the contract for Newcastle too.
Liverpool may yet turn out to be Newcastle’s benefactors, by providing the club with £50M – hopefully the £15M will also be paid in cool cash – for two Newcastle players within six months.
I always knew John Henry was a good guy. 😀
Newcastle would have £50M to replace those two players with, and with Newcastle’s scouting network seemingly becoming very good and extremely efficient, the club could do a lot with £50M this summer.
Yes, it wouldn’t all be spent on transfer fees, but would also help pay the wages of players coming into the club – but it’s still a lot of money.
We just have to hope that the Jose Enrique saga comes to its natural conclusion soon.
And it should, since the club will have met with Jose’s representatives this week, and should have a better idea whether Jose is going to get on his bike this summer.
