It was bound to happen, and another reason why Sir Alex Ferguson will now very likely ban his players from using Twitter.
Michael Owen – he still sometimes puts the Red Devils shirt on – apparently
Michael Owen has made some rather stupid and inflammatory comments on his twitter account, and one of them was that winning the Premier League was one of his greatest accomplishments.
That from a fringe player who only reached the 10 appearances level to get a medal – thanks to Alex Ferguson bringing him on a few times for a few minutes in the last games of the season, including at St. James Park, so Owen could reach that target.
And he started how many Premier League games last season – that’s right – one to be exact.
Michael Owen has come under increasing criticism in the last few days, for signing a new 12 month contract at United, when he hardly ever plays for the side, and that’s probably why he has so much time on his hands to count his money and be on Twitter.
But he has also made it clear he prefers to be on the bench for a side like Manchester United, than starting very game for a mediocre side – what a poor attitude that is.
Michael has made Newcastle fans furious with his latest hit on the club via Twitter. hen he said:
“Prefer playing less often in a top team than every game in a poor team. Been there and didn’t enjoy it.”
Since he’s played at Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Manchester United, that was a clear shot at the Newcastle club, and our site has had fans protesting that rather cheap shot. against a club that paid £16M for him and gave him £133K/week.
He cost Newcastle over £43M for the four years he was on Tyneside – with his transfer fee and wages – and he comes back with a cheap shot like that?
And last night Newcastle Managing Director Derek Llambias couldn’t take it any more, and blasted back at the former Liverpool star, who no longer is good enough to make the England squad:
“I’m very disappointed. Under Kevin Keegan’s management he was offered a one-year extension at £140K a week which he did not take. He was already on £133K. His time here cost £40-odd million, about £1.3M per goal.”
Maybe that was why Owen was soundly booed, when he was brought on against Newcastle late in the game at St. James’ Park on 19th April, so he could make those 10 appearances and get his medal.
He was booed soundly by Geordie fans, because he became the picture boy of Newcastle’s relegation season – he simply couldn’t care less and couldn’t even make the starting team – and he was the captain!
Newcastle had the 6th highest wage bill in the Premier League that season – and we still went down – because we found out most of the highly paid stars couldn’t give a dam when push came to shove.
Since those “stars” have been unloaded, Newcastle have made a rather startling come back and won the Championship in 2010, with a massive 102 points, and could have finished in 9th position in the PL last season, if the lads hadn’t conceded three goals in the last 30 minutes of the season to throw two points away against West Brom.
It just wasn’t to be.
Former Newcastle United Chairman Freddy Shepherd, who paid around £16M for the player from Real Madrid in August of 2005, blasted Michael Owen last night:
“We might have been a poor team but we made him a rich man. He spent more time ferrying between Cheshire and Tyneside in his £3.5M helicopter.”
We know Owen must have a lot of idle time on his hands during a season – but surely Alex Ferguson will now stop him from making these childish comments – Michael may be resigned to just counting his money – he’s said to be worth £40M.
Shouldn’t he be thanking Newcastle for that?
A little advice to Michael Owen – shut up and grow up – please.
Comments welcome.

Comment #80It’s definitely the real Craig (or at least the first post is), as that is his genuine Twitter account that he set up when there was an imposter last time.
At last, something is going to happen.
Isn’t gervhino playing tomorrow, so wont be him.
