Our concern that Newcastle seemed to pick up lots of injuries once Alan Pardew arrived last December, has been backed up by web-site Physioroom.com
Ben Arfa – out from early October with broken leg
The web-site is useful on checking on the players Newcastle have injured and when they are due to return, although they are not always up to date and the site lists the current injuries each club has.
It currently shows Newcatsle have Perch, Williamson, Harper, Kadar and Ben Arfa out, although young Kadar is now fully fit.
At the end of the season they also list the number of player days a club has had through injuries to players, and in that list, Newcastle have just been pipped by local rivals Sunderland.
Out of their official 25-man squad, Newcastle players were missing for a total of 1643 days.
In the 2006-2007 season with Roeder in charge Newcastle were top with 2019 player days lost.
In the season before that in 2005-2006 Newcastle were second, with 1743 player days lost, and again behind table toppers Sunderland.
Physioroom.com’s Stuart Mills commented on Newcastle’s injuries last season:
“Newcastle have really suffered with long-term injuries to important players this term.”
“I imagine after the upheaval in the early part of the season they will be very satisfied with what has been achieved.”
“It is hard for the big four to cope with this level of injuries, however for the rest of the league, with smaller squads, it is very tricky.”
Newcastle fans will remember when Newcastle were nearly always top of the Premier League Injury table every week through the season.
The club seemed to get so many injuries from around 2004 through 2007 when Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder were managers, and the lack of Newcastle’s best players through injury arguably cost both managers their jobs.
Graeme Souness insisted that the training be as though the lads were playing a game, and while that;s OK – it did lead to a lot of injuries during training.
And Souness often pressed players to come back before they were really ready, and that added to the malaise.
Last season was not helped by Dan Gosling being injured almost the whole season, and Ben Arfa being out from early October – so there’s a lot of player days racked up just by those two players.
To be fair to Pardew, both those players had their injuries long before Alan arrived on Tyneside,
Leon Best was another player who was out for most of the season, although when he did play he was a revelation for Newcastle, scoring 6 goals in 11 appearances for the side.
Hopefully, the problem with Leon’s ankle has now been fixed by the surgery he had in April, and we hope Leon can keep improving next season
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce will point to the number of injuries to try to keep his job on Wearside, but the terrible slump since January was almost frightening.
Sunderland eventually pulled out a couple of wins to secure their PL safety, and of course ended above Newcastle in the league table, when they smashed a woeful West Ham side 3-0 at Upton Park and Newcastle threw away a 3 goal lead at home to West Brom. 🙁
But to try to end on a positive note, we understand Alan Pardew will cut out the hand-to-hand combat training next season – so that should help. 😀

I live in Paris suburb. Long to explain, but for portuguese people, this is a special city. Ther’s several hundreds of thousands people of portuguese origin here.
And for all of them, Pedro Miguel Pauleta, once PSG’s striker is a legend. TO play striker in pAris for a portugues guy is something very special.

Comment #86Haha I’m a noob, just been looking through a few random articles from a few days back and haven’t seen his name mentioned.
Glad I have some fellow keen-eyed fans of him. Would be a real hit with fans I think, would prefer him to Zog, all things considered.

Are you actually saying we are getting Gervinho, Gamiero, Nzogbia ontop of the already completed Cabaye?
I will never believe we will get all of them in a single transfer window. No chance. You mean we are going to pay 65k+ for Gervinho, 45k for Cabaye, 55k for Nzog and 50k for Gamiero??
HAHA. I thought we had Ashley for owner and not a Dubai tycoon or whatever..

Comment #96This team would challenge for 5/6th:
————–Krul————–
Gosling-Taylor-Colo-Enrique
———-Tiote-Cabaye
Gervinho–Ben Arfa–Park
————Sturridge
Subs – Harper, Williamson, Simpson, Nolan, Ferguson, Jonas, Ba
Park would do a similar job to Jonas, but has better attacking instincts, in my opinion.
That team is all dependent on Jose staying, if he goes I think that will instigate Colo and Jonas’ departures.

Comment #98Really don’t want gamiero to sign now, he clearly doesn’t want to play for us and isn’t afraid to show it. I’m sure gervinho is hoping for better also but atleast he is keeping it to himself. Ba is a no brainer for free along with another centre forward and a right back/centre half. Would take cisse too. 2 free forwards who know where the onion bag is getting supplied by zog, Gerry and benny. With cabaye and tiote, Fu@k me man, am creaming me strides.

Why not? A very difficult task, but if Ben Arfa is fully operationnal, and if you get this top class striker you need, with the same team you get this season, well…
This is why, i’m nit sure to understand the strategy of the club.
For me, you need only one guy, a striker. Even if NUFC must spend all his money on him.

Well, he some times did play on the wing, but he’s a natural Stiker, and many people believes, the decision to make him paly winger is the key of his bad season.

Well, in fact, i agree with you, i just say it’s possible, mainly cause of Ben arfa.
Depending of his recovery sure. I’ve seen almost all his games these last four years.
Most of them were disapointing due to a lack of serious work in training. But his last year in Marseille, he realy have changed his mind.
Impossible to say how height he can go, but i really believe in him.

Jun 4, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Comment #119WWJBD – I’m of the same belief. 5/6th is up for grabs, 7/8th acceptable, 9/10th would be underwhelming and anything less is no improvement and would be definitely a poor season, especially if we assemble the type of team we’re thinking of!
