There has been news in the last couple of days that Newcastle may be interested in acquiring Birmingham City midfielder Craig Gardner.
Craig Gardner – Newcastle interested?
The 24 year-old former Aston Villa player is a very decent player, and he can score goals too, as he hit 10 goals for Birmingham last season, and was their top scorer.
That was one of Birmingham’s Achilles heels last season, and they were the lowest scoring side in the Premier League with just 37 goals scored.
The news is that Sunderland are also interested in the player, but we wonder whether Craig is good enough for Newcastle, and whether he would get many games in the first team on Tyneside?
But there’s no doubt he is one of Birmingham’s best players, and the vultures will be circling the Birmingham club this summer, but surely Birmingham will want to hold on to their best players, if at all possible.
Last time the Midlands club were relegated in 2008, they bounced straight back, and they will want to do the same thing next season, under the same manager – Scotsman Alex MacLeish.
The Solihull born player joined Birmingham eighteen months ago in a deal reported to be worth around £3.5M, and he has played 52 times for Birmingham with 11 goals.
He started his career in 2005 at Aston Villa, and looked very good as a youngster, and played 80 times for Villa scoring 6 goals.
Craig played 14 times for the England U21 side and scored 2 goals.
Gardner could probably be acquired for around £4M, but we’re absolutely sure Birmingham will want to keep him at the club.

Comment #8I would not Pay 4m for him. He’s only going to sit on the bench. 3m at most!!
Dont think we are realistically interested in him though.

Comment #21Buying a midfielder who’s probably scored less than Nolan this season to replace Nolan (who’s off apparently).
Yeah – that sounds just like the Toon.
