Newcastle Very Close To Signing Swansea Defender

There is news today in the Mirror that Newcastle are about to sign Swansea’s Neil Taylor for £1M.

Neil Taylor – Newcastle will sign him for £1M

The defender plays on the left side of either defense or midfield, and if this news is true it’s a bit of a surprise.

And we have to wonder if the player has been brought in even as a replacement for Jose Enrique?

It seems that Newcastle have discovered the player, who played 18 times in the Championship last season and made 20 appearances in total,  low  because of injuries and suspensions, has a £1M buyout clause in his contract.

Swansea have no idea how Newcastle found that out, but of course that’s what agents are for, and was it supposed to have been kept quiet – we don’t think so.

Apparently the Swansea club are furious over Newcastle’s move, but the news is that the deal will go through shortly. But you can’t put buyout clauses in a player’s contract and then assume they can be kept secret.

Taylor began his career at Manchester City, but then the Welsh-born player joined Wrexham at age 15, and signed a professional contract in July of 2007.

He played 85 times for the Welsh club with 3 goals before moving to Swansea last summer on an initial free transfer.

A fee of £150K plus 10% of any future profit was agreed between the two clubs just before entering a compensation committee tribunal in late September last year.

Taylor made his debut for the Wales national football team on 23 May 2010 against Croatia at the Stadion Gradski, and has played 3 times so far for Wales, after playing for all the Welsh youth sides.

We haven’t seen this player play but Newcastle probably he was too much of a good buy not to sign him.

But did they ever think it’s possible that Newcastle could have three Taylors playing in the back four with Ryan Taylor and Steven Taylor also defenders?

A  TV commentator’s nightmare no doubt. 😀

If any readers have watched this player play this season, maybe they can tell us what he’s like, and we didn’t even know he was on Newcastle’s radar screen, so they kept this one under wraps.

He will be a good buy for Newcastle if he’s anything like the other defender we paid £1M for 18 months ago – Mike Williamson.

Comments welcome.

He’s a half decent LB if you don’t count the sending off against Forest but he’s not good enough to start I don’t think, decent backup but a better more experienced LB is needed if Enrique leaves.

toonbelmonter… Chill out buddy and just see where the transfer market takes us. Don’t speculate when the Tabloid’s are barely ever correct!

Until we have an absolute confirmation in black and white (pun intended!) then we can be riled/delighted with the end result!

    @Toonbelmonter

Probably just paper talk mate, from what I’ve heard Arsenal aren’t to interested in Gervinho because Arshavin wants to stay.

All these rumours are starting to p*ss me off though.

I have never heard of this lad.

But this is positive news as we are short of players at left back. No matter how good Shane Fergurson is, he does not have experience playing a full season of top flight football.

This lad will provide cover for left back.
I just hope that this lad is better than Perch.

If he’s a direct replacement for Jose i will be worried.

If he’s for backup and rotational reasons. That’s fine, as long as he’s better than Perch.

Never heard of this guy, but even if he is good why do we want him!? We already have Shane Ferfuson, who is an upcomin star! This guy can stop Shane`s deveopment:-(… Neil Taylor and Shane Ferguson plays in the two same positions.

No where near good enough to take over from Jose, Not young enough at 22, 2 years older than Fergusson who i feel isnt much worse than this dude.

Would be a good backup player for number of places but NOT a starter and not good enough to take over from Jose end on.

If Naylor does sign then I believe he would offer a more defence-minded alternative on the left side, rather than a direct replacement. As for being linked with Drame, we will need plenty cover because we would lose him and Tiote (and gervinho?) for large parts of the season as both the Ivory coast and Senegal look sure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.
