There is news today in the Mirror that Newcastle are about to sign Swansea’s Neil Taylor for £1M.
Neil Taylor – Newcastle will sign him for £1M
The defender plays on the left side of either defense or midfield, and if this news is true it’s a bit of a surprise.
And we have to wonder if the player has been brought in even as a replacement for Jose Enrique?
It seems that Newcastle have discovered the player, who played 18 times in the Championship last season and made 20 appearances in total, low because of injuries and suspensions, has a £1M buyout clause in his contract.
Swansea have no idea how Newcastle found that out, but of course that’s what agents are for, and was it supposed to have been kept quiet – we don’t think so.
Apparently the Swansea club are furious over Newcastle’s move, but the news is that the deal will go through shortly. But you can’t put buyout clauses in a player’s contract and then assume they can be kept secret.
Taylor began his career at Manchester City, but then the Welsh-born player joined Wrexham at age 15, and signed a professional contract in July of 2007.
He played 85 times for the Welsh club with 3 goals before moving to Swansea last summer on an initial free transfer.
A fee of £150K plus 10% of any future profit was agreed between the two clubs just before entering a compensation committee tribunal in late September last year.
Taylor made his debut for the Wales national football team on 23 May 2010 against Croatia at the Stadion Gradski, and has played 3 times so far for Wales, after playing for all the Welsh youth sides.
We haven’t seen this player play but Newcastle probably he was too much of a good buy not to sign him.
But did they ever think it’s possible that Newcastle could have three Taylors playing in the back four with Ryan Taylor and Steven Taylor also defenders?
A TV commentator’s nightmare no doubt. 😀
If any readers have watched this player play this season, maybe they can tell us what he’s like, and we didn’t even know he was on Newcastle’s radar screen, so they kept this one under wraps.
He will be a good buy for Newcastle if he’s anything like the other defender we paid £1M for 18 months ago – Mike Williamson.
