We reported yesterday that the French press claimed that Newcastle United were very close to signing Lille star Gervinho.
Gervinho – scored twice for Ivory Coast yesterday
But there have also been reports that Arsenal are in for the player, and are willing to offer Lille up to £15M for their star winger/striker.
But so far no Arsenal bid has been accepted by the French club, but there is certainly lots of news going around linking the Ivory Coast player with the London club, which is little worrying. 🙁
Nevertheless, the news has been confirmed today that his agent has said he will be linking up with his Lille teammate Yohan Cabaye (notice I got the spelling right), and his Ivory Coast international team mate, Cheick Tiote, who is at Newcastle.
It’s not really new news, but rather a change in emphasis of yesterday’s news, to now say his agent is confirming he will join Newcastle.
Cheick Tiote was signed from FC Twente only last summer, and was outstanding for the Magpies last term, and ended up the Newcastle United Blog Player of the Season in his very first season at the club..
And if Newcastle capture Gervinho we have to think Cheick waxed lyrical to his team-mate, about the Newcastle club and life on Tyneside in general. 😀
The French press yesterday suggested that Newcastle would be paying around £18M for Cabaye and Gervinho, so Newcastle will be paying close to £14M for Gervinho, if that figure is indeed accurate.
One advantage Newcastle will hold over Arsenal, who have been interested in the player for a couple of years now, is that Newcastle can pay Lille in cool cash – up front – and that should be a huge incentive for the French club to do business with Newcastle.
That’s thanks to the massive £35M fee the Tyneside club received for Andy Carroll from Liverpool – £30M of which was in cash.
And Gervinho scored two goals in the Ivory Coast 6-2 victory over Benin yesterday, and they now qualify for the finals of the African Cup of Nations to take place next January.
If Newcastle do secure the services of Gervinho, we have to assume they will end their interest in Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro.
Maybe Newcastle could go after Chelsea’s 21 year-old Daniel Sturridge, who scored in the England U21 2-0 win over Noway at St. Mary’s, Southampton yesterday.
While all this news is very positive, we’ll just have to wait and see if Newcastle can indeed pull this one off – but if they do it will be a terrific signing by Newcastle.
It’s never over until it’s over, is an old saying that is very true in these transfer dealings, so we still need to be a just little wary until any deal is signed.
However the news is more than encouraging at the moment, so here’s hoping. 😀
Howay the Lads!!

Comment #41Guys i was just thinking… Chicharito has been the buy of the season… and was wondering if there were more Chicharito’s in the Mexican league and i think i found one
Marco Fabian De la Mora
From what i can gather on the web he is a Central attacking midfielder…
He played in the same team Chicharito played in and has 18 goals in 90 (since 2007) appearences for them at the age of 21 … Goal per game Ratio isnt impressive when stated like that… but i believe most of his appearences were as a substitute…
In the current mexican season (17 games played so far – he has already netted 9 goals and 1 assist… at the age of 21…. Now thats impressive… Reckon he can do a chicharito in the premier league?

Comment #47Great news, hopefully all will be confirmed at the press conference on Thursday (I believe I read someone state this yesterday on a thread)
Ideal press conference would be:
Alan Pardew sat next to Jose Enrique to confirm new contract has been signed, Gervinho, Gameiro and Cabaye all sat there to confirm they have signed.
All we need now is the LB cover (if) Jose signs a new deal, another back up striker (Ba?) and a CB then I would be happy.

That is a really dumb comment mate. If this blog was called “nufctransferrumoursblog.co.uk”, then I would agree with you. But it’s not. Think about it.
There’s more to Newcastle United than prospective signings. There is the team we currently have, and spend the year supporting.
And you’re suggesting that you have to either not care, or 100% believe the rumors. There is a middle ground – I am allowed to speculate about signings.
If you’re suggesting that just because I do not 100% believe that the deal has already been done, 100%, completely, then I am not allowed to talk about the possibility of us signing a player…. The I really don’t know where you’re coming from.

Is it really true that Sturridge won’t come to the toon because of Barton, or is that more speculation?

Other than to say I’m getting a big TOLD YOU SO sign ready for the FCB neggers on here who said he would sign crap third raters and frees on copper wages. Oh boy, oh boy the suspense is sweet.
It must be killing the neggers to think a DOUBLE signing of Gervinho and Cabaye might soon be announced with MORE of that class on the way.
Back to me sign making for now …

I’ve never seen Gameiro play but this is what it says on wikipedia:
He plays as a striker whose influence can extend out on the wings and in the hole. Gameiro is described as “a fast, energetic player with good dribbling abilities.
Coupled with the fact he is 5ft 7” and his main reason for Valencia preference was his fear he wouldn’t adapt to the physicality of the EPL, he won’t be signing as a lone front man for Newcastle.
This is the reason why it is Gervinho OR Gameiro. Gameiro is no target man!

Comment #74with gameiro we would play clever through balls, one-twos and cut backs not hit and hope, play the percentage crosses and long balls to a lumbering target man. bring it on.

Comment #75There is a good chance now. With all the players rumoured to leave Lille this summer they will need hard cash to restock and we can supply them with that. Arsenal’s owners are not known to throw around cash and that gives us a bigger chance to land him. Gervinho has said he wants to play CL footie but Arsenal are not yet in the CL and have to play a qualifier. We have landed a teammate from Lille and already have fellow ivorian and teammate Tiote to help us land him. Rumours also say that if Gervinho went to Arsenal it would most likely be to replace Arshavin who just said he isn’t going anywhere. All things considered I don’t think anyone can disagree that there is a “fair” chance that we land him?? 🙂

Comment #78Bill-son, I’m with you on this again. When you make the sign, will you say that Munster Mag said so aswell ? I dont trust ashley in most things, but we have cold cash now , a smart manager who wont waste it, a brilliant main scout and the signings of Cabaye and Tiote alone suggest good things at the club. I dont agree re barton, but Ashley wont be taken for a mug in the market place, which is more good news.

Comment #80Yeah you’re probably right but it makes sense that he feels he would adapt better to Spanish football bearing in mind his qualities.
There is no way we will be signing him to play up front in a 4-5-1 – I’ll stick my neck out on that one.
