We reported yesterday that the French press claimed that Newcastle United were very close to signing Lille star Gervinho.
Gervinho – scored twice for Ivory Coast yesterday
But there have also been reports that Arsenal are in for the player, and are willing to offer Lille up to £15M for their star winger/striker.
But so far no Arsenal bid has been accepted by the French club, but there is certainly lots of news going around linking the Ivory Coast player with the London club, which is little worrying. 🙁
Nevertheless, the news has been confirmed today that his agent has said he will be linking up with his Lille teammate Yohan Cabaye (notice I got the spelling right), and his Ivory Coast international team mate, Cheick Tiote, who is at Newcastle.
It’s not really new news, but rather a change in emphasis of yesterday’s news, to now say his agent is confirming he will join Newcastle.
Cheick Tiote was signed from FC Twente only last summer, and was outstanding for the Magpies last term, and ended up the Newcastle United Blog Player of the Season in his very first season at the club..
And if Newcastle capture Gervinho we have to think Cheick waxed lyrical to his team-mate, about the Newcastle club and life on Tyneside in general. 😀
The French press yesterday suggested that Newcastle would be paying around £18M for Cabaye and Gervinho, so Newcastle will be paying close to £14M for Gervinho, if that figure is indeed accurate.
One advantage Newcastle will hold over Arsenal, who have been interested in the player for a couple of years now, is that Newcastle can pay Lille in cool cash – up front – and that should be a huge incentive for the French club to do business with Newcastle.
That’s thanks to the massive £35M fee the Tyneside club received for Andy Carroll from Liverpool – £30M of which was in cash.
And Gervinho scored two goals in the Ivory Coast 6-2 victory over Benin yesterday, and they now qualify for the finals of the African Cup of Nations to take place next January.
If Newcastle do secure the services of Gervinho, we have to assume they will end their interest in Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro.
Maybe Newcastle could go after Chelsea’s 21 year-old Daniel Sturridge, who scored in the England U21 2-0 win over Noway at St. Mary’s, Southampton yesterday.
While all this news is very positive, we’ll just have to wait and see if Newcastle can indeed pull this one off – but if they do it will be a terrific signing by Newcastle.
It’s never over until it’s over, is an old saying that is very true in these transfer dealings, so we still need to be a just little wary until any deal is signed.
However the news is more than encouraging at the moment, so here’s hoping. 😀
Howay the Lads!!

Comment #10IF we sign Gervinho, i see him as a supporting striker OR a Winger. We still need a good main striker – Ganiero or Sturridge

Comment #18ToonST you want to see him in a skirt? Each to their own lad.
Anyone know why people are saying we won’t go for gamiero if we sign gervinho? They play in a different position don’t they? I think upfront should be our main priority now. Hopefully it’s not the money that is the issue with gamiero.
Also seems strange no deal have been announced yet since routledge is reported to have signed gor qpr already. It’s just one big guessing game

True but thats why they are putting 10+M aside for a main striker.
Id like Ba on a free too tho.
I could see the partnership of Gervinho/Ba/Jonas with Arfa just behind that would be one scary attack.

Comment #29i am over the moon with this signing if it comes through, but shouldnt we be a little worried about when the African cup of nations takes place and we lose Tiote and Gervinho (if he signs) for around six weeks in a prime part of the season?!

Comment #34100% true that he may sign!
To all the doubters, who seem to have disappeared – fully understand your “won’t believe it until he’s signed on the dotted line” position – but if that’s the way you feel, then why follow and contribute (if that’s the right word) to the blog?
Why not just wait until the club announces the signings?

Comment #35you have to begin to think that despite the fact that nolan and barton had very good seasons last year that both ashley and pardew are building a longer term side and as such won’t offer them the same contracts they were expecting. The fact that enrique is still with us boils down to liverpool not being able to match the wages he’s on at present, let alone the mega deal supposedly put onto the table last week! Losing nolan and barton is’nt the end of the world if they are replaced with faster and more skilled replacements, to add to gosling and ben arfa. The biggest question mark for me is what has happened to vuckic? Anyone have any idea?
Nile Ranger – now there is a thick young man. To be given the opportunities in his life and then to obviously run out of chances again is truly stupid.

Comment #36Ed – Where’s your source to this Agent confirming it? And I think an article said it was 18M euros for both Cabaye and Gervinho. That is 14M pounds for both not only Gervinho. Great piece of business by the board.
I want to see this official or the actual quotes from the player and then I’ll celebrate.
I see very good times ahead 🙂

Comment #40I know that the right way for the club to do business is to say nothing until it’s all done and dusted but the suspense is killing me. I keep reading the blog, all the comments & twitter hoping for the ‘……… signs for Newcastle’ headlines and until they have a number and their name on the famouns black & white shirt I’ll have to keep my feet on the ground.
Bah!
