Lee Ryder, probably the best local reporter on Tyneside, is confirming in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today, the news that Newcastle are after Swansea’s Neil Taylor and Reading striker Shane Long is correct.
Neil Taylor – almost certainly signing for Newcastle
It’s always hard to know which transfer stories are true but the news yesterday that Newcastle would be signing Swansea defender Neil Taylor for £1M seems accurate.
Newcastle somehow found out one of the most improved players in the Championship last season, has a £1M buy-out clause in his contract.
Swansea are infuriated about it, but exactly why that;s the case we’re not sure – they shouldn’t have put that clause in if they didn’t want another club to exercise the option.
We know Reading boss Brian McDermott is a close friend of Alan Pardew – is already resigned to losing his Irish International striker, a natural poacher of goals, if ever we saw one.
Of course the big news about Neil Taylor is that he was sent off after just 90 seconds of Swansea’s play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest, but Swansea still got through and eventually beat Reading 4-2 in the play-off final at Wembley.
It seems almost certain that Taylor will sign for Newcastle and £5.3M for Yohan Cabaye and Neil Taylor is just excellent business by Newcastle, especially in these difficult times, and they exercised buy-out clauses in each of those players’ contracts. Cool.
While Newcastle have been linked with some big players so far in the transfer window, don’t be surprised if Newcastle bring in a couple of almost unknown players too.
Cheick Tiote wasn’t well known at all when he arrived on Tyneside, and look what that lad did last season for the side.
Comments welcome.

Comment #6If all the new rumours are true could be a nice balance of players who have been blooded in the English leagues (even if only the championship), and the French topflight (Gervihno and Cabaye). But what’s going on with our senior players? Nolan, and Barton may both be on their way. I have a feeling that the board is a little frightened of the power that they have in the dressing room and want shot of them for that reason alone. It’s like a statement from Ashley and Lambias: ‘We run the club and not these scousers’

Comment #8Got a few Irish mates who are well into their footy and they all seem to think Long would be a good buy for any prem team.

Comment #9I would have both but Shane Long wouldn’t be our main striker in my opinion he would need someone alongside him to score the goals. Neil Taylor looks a fantastic prospect though.

Comment #12is there a competition between the papers to see who can come up with the most names for nufc and liverpool to be linked with the press have spent ashleys money 100 times over and the same can be said for liverpool every player seems to have interest from liverpool and newcastle.i suppose that if the list is long enough we might have bought one of the players on it.its like backing every horse in a race you are bound to have a winner.

Comment #18Shane Long also linked with Celtic,Everton,Aston villa and even Bayern Munich who will bid appx 8 million euros so this would apparently price celtic out of a bid, but Madjeski is keen to do buisness for there best player asap, as there already looking to recruit his replacment.

Comment #23Regarding She Long, I know a lot of Reading supporters who say he’s alright, but last season he was having the best form of his career.
Not sure how well he’ll make the step up, but if he doesn’t cost too much, I’m sure he’s worth a punt.

Comment #30@ Davies i agree do we already have better or simular in Best , but i have a few friends who are Reading fans saying he would be very capable of the transition to the epl & his 28 goals this season have come from be mainly a lone striker with noel hunt playing of him.
