Lee Ryder, probably the best local reporter on Tyneside, is confirming in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today, the news that Newcastle are after Swansea’s Neil Taylor and Reading striker Shane Long is correct.
Neil Taylor – almost certainly signing for Newcastle
It’s always hard to know which transfer stories are true but the news yesterday that Newcastle would be signing Swansea defender Neil Taylor for £1M seems accurate.
Newcastle somehow found out one of the most improved players in the Championship last season, has a £1M buy-out clause in his contract.
Swansea are infuriated about it, but exactly why that;s the case we’re not sure – they shouldn’t have put that clause in if they didn’t want another club to exercise the option.
We know Reading boss Brian McDermott is a close friend of Alan Pardew – is already resigned to losing his Irish International striker, a natural poacher of goals, if ever we saw one.
Of course the big news about Neil Taylor is that he was sent off after just 90 seconds of Swansea’s play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest, but Swansea still got through and eventually beat Reading 4-2 in the play-off final at Wembley.
It seems almost certain that Taylor will sign for Newcastle and £5.3M for Yohan Cabaye and Neil Taylor is just excellent business by Newcastle, especially in these difficult times, and they exercised buy-out clauses in each of those players’ contracts. Cool.
While Newcastle have been linked with some big players so far in the transfer window, don’t be surprised if Newcastle bring in a couple of almost unknown players too.
Cheick Tiote wasn’t well known at all when he arrived on Tyneside, and look what that lad did last season for the side.
Comments welcome.

Comment #42I feel this Taylor will be just another Perch, someone who will struggle, i feel he isnt too much between him and Fergusson, so whats the point of replacing Jose for a worse player?

Comment #43btw will people stop comparing Neil Taylor to James Perch please before you even see anything of him.. Perch wasnt even any good in the championship he’s just versatile.. but Taylor is actually a really good player who imo will easily make the step up and challenge for the left back spot

Comment #44FERGUSON IS NOT A DEFENDER FFS!!!!!
hes average at best for cover he’s far too weak, he’s got the potential to be a really good winger.. we cant just rely on a young lad to play out of his natural position when enriques injured we need specialist cover for each and every position and at £1million for a good young players its a bargain so stop bloody moaning and give the lad a chance

Comment #46Regarding Shane Long remember Andy Carroll made his name in the Championship and stepped up to the Premiership and he didnt net 28 goals like Long has done.
I think the lad deserves a chance for £5m and one thing he doesnt carry is a prima donna Carroll attitude and also the baggage.

Comment #47Kadar injury prone, not natural postion anyway
Enrique undecided still!, So this young Taylor could still be a + 1 situation , so if the price is correct at 1m we should deffo beef up in this postion.

Comment #48My thoughts exactly KevinP, at his age & wages he would ask for i think he could be a good addition to the squad.
Excellent appearance record this season, played as lone striker for the most part & has a great ability & strengh in the air for a player of his size.
got be worth a gamble.

Comment #50Hard grafter with a good touch, pace and an instinct to finish. We couldn’t be disappointed with Shane Long, even if he ends up second choice to Gameiro or Sturridge (in your dreams). I watch Ireland whenever they are playing and Long is mainly Trappatoni’s impact sub. But he runs the channels, chases lost causes and isn’t scared to put his head in, in the box. Definitely a good buy.

Comment #51Mo Drysdale – spot on in your selections mate, although your home formation is a bit too risky.

Comment #52As for taylor, signing a left-back cover is something we’ve been waiting 3 years to do.
Three Bloody Years!
And at least it would allow Ferguson to be loaned out and prove/improve himself, which is what we should have done with ranger, except we hadn’t enough striker cover either.
– What a club!

Comment #56bring taylor in for ferguson to be loned out ? wtf you been eating sav, i think jose is on way out and i hope fergy gets the full time spot of lb/lw, get jose to fuk , he,s messed the club about for too long now, keep nolan and barton for next season defo to work midfield until the french foreign legion get bedded in, too risky to play a near full midfied and strike force with new players, suicidal
