Newcastle Interested In Algerian Center-Back

There is news today linking Newcastle with Rangers’ Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra.

Madjid Bougherra – wants to play in Premier League

We would be surprised if Newcastle are interested in the center-back, who turns 29 in October, and still has one year left on his contract at Rangers.

This is what Bougherra said today:

“My focus is still on the Premier League. I played there for six months with Charlton and want to go back as six months isn’t a long time.” “I don’t want any trouble between me and the club. I want any move to be easy.”

The 6’3″ center-back played at Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic, before moving to Rangers three years ago, and he has 47 caps for Algeria.

Arsene Wenger, who is desperate for some solid central defenders this summer, is also said to be interested in the player, who played extremely well for Algeria in last year’s FIFA World Cup.

Bougherra has played around 80 times for the Scottish Champions, but it looks he has his mind set on moving south of the border, and playing in the best league in the world.

You can hardly blame him for that, and this is not the first time the player has been linked with Newcastle.

But we’d be very surprised if  the Magpies are now  interested in this player, with three top center-backs – Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini at the club.

If Newcastle do bring in another center-back this summer, we would expect it to be someone a lot younger.

What do you think?

I’d take him. All the Rangers games I’ve watched he’s looked a cut above the rest, able to read the game, strong, commanding, and possesses some pace. Would give Colo a run for his money…

He would’nt come to us in January the season we were about to get relegated as he deemed us too much of a risk so f**k him.Besides he’s not good enough.

Too old, not good enough. I’d prefer to keep willo, taylor and colo and start bringing Kadar through.

It’s paper trash! We are well covered for CB positions. At 29 I just can’t see it. He might just be the Campbell replacement. Yet if you remember that Pardew publicly mentioned his distaste in the lack of quality in the SPL you realize this is probably a fabricated story.

Benton, Colo has been class this season but factoring in his age, high wages and the fact we paid alot of money for him and MA will want as much of that back as possible, I doubt anyone would come in for him.

He wouldnt interest the big teams and the smaller teams couldnt afford him.

agree mate, but i think he’ll want to play next season, say what you will about Smith but he’s an honest pro who always gives 100%for NUFC, its just that 100% is no enough anymore for us. Also being told that Neil Taylor has agreed a 5 year deal in principle, finer details of his contract to be sort before he undertakes a mediical

If he’s better than Campbell and cheap, why not.
    We do need another CB.

    Our squad size needs increasing.
An experienced, international CB. who commands in his position … yes please!

I think we need another CB as back up like. That showed last season, the fact that Campbell got on the pitch proved it.

But the question is, is this lad good enough, like our Foster, he has been playing in a lesser league in Scotland.

I think he is decent. He looked quite good at WC. He would be a good buy, but we need to get players in the attack firstly.

Barton and Nolan be out this summer because they both want longer contracts, so why would we go out and sign a 29 year old???????
Don’t expect anyone over the age on 26 to come into the club from now on

haha yeah steve, we don’t have ‘top centre backs’ as Ed puts it but imo Colo is class. Willo is good but hes abit too no-nonsense for me, and Taylor is good with his head, good attacking, but his positional skills have always been questionable.

He did look pretty decent in the world cup. If I was picking a CB to buy, I’d be looking at Samba, but he’s going to cost a fortune, and I think he would be a luxury at this point anyway.

If we’re looking to boulster our options at CB, I suppose this wouldn’t be a bad way to go.

Unless the transfer fee is peanuts or the players are free agents, then age isn’t really a factor.

If Barton goes this summer then it will be for next to nout due to the fact he is in the last year of his contract.

If Nolan goes this summer then he will command a decent fee because he is still under a lengthy contract.

If both leave then I am not too concerned, we can play:

    ___________ Tiote

NZogbia ____ Ben Arfa _____ Jonas

And I would make Collo captain.

Colo for Captain: Plays every match, loves being Captain, Has Captained Newcastle and Deportivo before and is a good solid player and a good bloke that loves the place too.

This is only when Nolan is not in the side. As I see Nolan as the perfect Captain, a real leader and good example for all to follow.
