Gervinho Says He May Stay At Lille

There were reports over the last two days that Gervinho will probably decide which club to join by the end of the week.

Gervinho – could stay at Lille?

Arsenal and Manchester City are supposed to be the two clubs in pole position for the player, but his agent today has refused to be drawn on which club his client will join, and that decision may not even come until early next week.

His agent Boisseau has said today:

“Nothing is finalized on Gervinho’s future,”“Gervinho will make his decision either by the end of the week or very early next week. He has many options and there has been a lot of interest in him.”

“For the moment, we’re not in a position to say anything about where he will go.”

“I can’t say anything about Newcastle – we have a good relationship with them and other clubs. The matter is confidential and it is impossible to confirm where he will be going.”

The winger/striker has one year left on his current contract, which is also said to include an £8M release  clause.

Gervinho seems to have muddied the waters just a little bit this morning.

The 24 year-old has told the French press he may even stay at Lille next season, where of course he can get European Champions League football with the French Champions.

This is what the Ivorian said today:

“There is always a choice to make.” “I have one year left on my contract and I am still in discussions with Lille.”

“One thing is sure, either I extend my contract now – or I go.” “Lille is a very good project that would interest a lot of people.”

There must be a 1% chance of him staying at Lille, because why would he turn down much bigger wages elsewhere, and why would Lille not want to accept at least £8M for their star player?

We simply have no idea if Newcastle are still in with a chance of still getting Gervinho, but it now would be a big surprise if Newcastle can pull this deal off.

Comments welcome.

Yeah he is in contract negotiations and if he does not get the offer he wants then he is off.

He has stated one way or another his future will be sorted.

    Thats it Mr T.

We cannot hang around whilst other clubs pick up them players.

We need to persue multiple targets of equal quality

Maybe so, but other players have done it. Not too dis-similar to our own HBA.

Are you kidding me? Talk about double standards…

You whinged and whined about the whole Carroll affair, then you say this.

    I despair sometimes, I really do…

No Richy, it’s a completely different story. HBA wanted to go, OM didn’t want to sell him so he decided to come here instead – quite literally, pick up and come here instead.

    Thats the point.

We can’t stop all transfer activity while we wait for Gervinho, we need to persue other targets or they are gonna have gone by the time he says he aint coming or hes going to Arsenal.

@supervil: I disagree. Carroll was on handsome wages as it was and then held the club to ransom with a new contract. The French league will be giving Gervinho a decent wage, don’t get me wrong, but nowhere near the kind of money he’d be on over here.

Yes but there is absolutely no evidence to that, Richy. The simple fact is, it’s internationals and I’m sure those international players would like to put their feet up for a few minutes before they’re thrown back into the mixer.

Liverpool certainly love pinching young North East talent. Wonder if they’re scouting by watching Geordie Shore?

sounds to me that his agent is trying to drum up more interest in his player or get a better negogiating position by saying there are many clubs yet also saying its confidential. why are you talking about it then?

he agreed to go to the toon last week if you ask me..

“I can’t say anything about Newcastle – we have a good relationship with them and other clubs. The matter is confidential and it is impossible to confirm where he will be going.”

erm to me that confirms his destination. guess we’ll find out soon enough though

I agree that Carroll held the club to ransom, but I don’t agree with this “why wouldn’t he want to leave the club he’s just won the league and gained champions league football with… for more money?”

It’s just a bit hypocritical to jump from chastising players for chasing money, to then criticising them for not chasing OUR money…

Translation: “Last chance other bigger clubs to come in and make an improved offer.. Newcastle you can probably seal the deal now by upping you signing on fee / wages offer.”

Hes just trying to get the best possible deal. I’d argue its probably a good sign… just my feeling like.
