News today in the Swansea Evening Post that Neil Taylor has asked Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins for permission to talk to Newcastle.
Neil Taylor – has asked for permission to speak with Newcastle
Newcastle have already lodged a bid of £1M for the Welsh left-back
Taylor is understood to have contacted Jenkins from his vacation in Spain, for permission to speak to Newcastle, after the Newcastle bid came in last Monday.
The news is that Taylor will be offered a bumper five-year deal to sign on for the St James’ Park club — but Swansea must first agree to the fee.
The Post is reporting today that Taylor’s contract does not include a clause which allows him to leave if a £1M offer comes in, but the clause states that Taylor can speak to a club if that club offers £1M.
That’s splitting hairs, and it seems Swansea are trying to wriggle out of the wording of the contract, because why would the player talk to a club if they bid £1M, but then Swansea say they want £3M?
A player can only speak to a club if a fee has been agreed which is why the contract is worded that way – it’s called a release clause.
So that’s very dicey in legal terms to say Swansea do not have to accept the £1M offer, and of course the Welsh club may try to get higher than £1M, but they are on very shaky legal ground if they try that one.
Taylor signed a three-year deal when he arrived from Wrexham last summer, and it’s’ not surprising the player now wants to leave after hearing of Newcastle’s interest.
Once the player arrives back from his vacation in Spain, we would expect the deal to go through, and also expect Jose Enrique to be sold, since it’s becoming clear he wants to leave the club.
We’re still thinking that a possible back four for Newcastle could be Taylor(R) Coloccini Taylor(S) Taylor(N). 😀
Comments welcome.

Comment #9Have I missed something? Where is it clear that Enrique wants to leave?
Big difference between that and not being able to agree a contract…

watched this guy a few times this season, and I think he could make the step up, he’s quick, physical and has a good range of passing, but he’s raw and would no doubt need time to adjust, but for a small fee would be a great signing for us

Comment #17@Richy: Smalling was in a similar place, if you remember. Fulham signed him, Man U came for him and look where he is today.

Sure you get some diamonds from the rough, it just makes a difference if you are paying £1M or £3M on a gamble don’t it.

He never said he wanted to leave.
He said something like “if I stay, I’m happy. If I leave I am happy too, I just want to play football”

Comment #21£3m is pocket change in football though, Richy. It’s worth a punt either way and I reckon he can make the step up – can’t be any worse than Perch, anyway.
