Newcastle are after some good players this summer, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Kevin Gameiro – it’s Valencia or PSG
So it’s all very well going after top players, but if Newcastle cannot get them through the door, it doesn’t amount to much.
And on a day that should see Newcastle sign their first player of the summer in 25 year-old french midfielder Yohan Cabaye, it seems that Kevin Gameiro, after many hints over the last month , that he wanted to move to Spain or even to PSG, really meant it.
Gameiro told RMC Sport after France’s 1-0 win in Poland, that he would favor a move to Spain or even Paris:
“I’ll think about my future in the coming days.” “It will be Paris or Valencia.”
“The two clubs are very good.” “I will calmly make my decision over the next days.”
“I love both clubs.” “I have always been attracted to Spain.” “We will see what will happen.”
“An agreement has yet to be made with Lorient.”
That last sentence is interesting because apparently Lorient have already accented a £10M bid from Newcastle for the player, but of course that’s only the first step in a transfer, and then the player has to agree terms and agree to move.
That never happened in Kevin’s case, even though the news is that Newcastle were always hopeful of getting the player.
It’s unlikely that Valencia or PSG will be able offer £10M, so Lorient are unlikely to get as good a deal for their star striker, than if he had indeed agreed to move to Newcastle.
The news was that the Magpies were after Gamerio or Lille’s Gervinho but not both, but it seems the Ivory Cast International is also unlikely to john Newcastle, since the players has repeatedly said he wants Champions League football next season, and maybe he means that too.
Arsenal would appear to be the favorites to sign the exciting winger, although Manchester City also meets his requirements, and there was news earlier in the week the Eastlands clubs were also interested.
You win some and you lose some.

Comment #2I’m glad. Don’t want someone at Newcastle if he doesn’t want to play for us! If the only reason he came was because we offered more money then we would be bringing back players we despised of (Owen!)

Comment #5If I had to bet now, I’d guess he’s heading to PSG. They’re the only ones that can actually afford him.
Eh, no bother… Plenty more young strong strikers around.

Comment #7So we loose another target. Not very optimistic about gervinho either. Can see us ending up with someone crap like carlton cole. Fulham have put a 6Million bid in for nolan. If fat cash lets him go i will be disgusted. So we get rid of our best players and get in crap ones? We have swansea left back neil taylor lined up to replace our excellent enrique. where is the ambition there. I really worry for newcastle utd! ! !

Comment #9Maybe Erdinc instead? Or, as many have said already, make a substantial bid for Sturridge and test Chelsea’s resolve?
I am desperate to see a central midfield combination of Cabaye and Martin at Newcastle, and have been for some time. Last night’s game just made me want it even more!
I’d take Boudebouz and N’Zogbia on the wings, too 😉

Comment #15Do Newcastle have Any intentions of buying top players or bidding on them knowing full well we won’t get them just to please the fans and we end up with second rate journeymen we need 2 strikers the only decent one we have is best!! Shola loven xisco all need to do one I wouldn’t mind ba as he has proved he can score in a poor team if he can keep fit that is I like bendtner lots don’t tho

If Arsenal lose Cesc then I think they will be in for a different type of player than Gervinho.
They will want to try and get a replacement for they player they never replaced. Patty Viera.
Now if Nasir goes then they will be in for a player more in the Gervinho mould, but my guess is they would then push the boat out for Hazard.
Also they are in for defenders… so will be splashing some cash their. IMO

Comment #19Unfortunately we are not in Europe, so have a difficult job of signing top players. If we have cash to spend and other teams can’t compete, then there is still hope for other targets.
We really need to keep a hold of our current players though, until we make some signings. We were really thin on the ground last season and if we want to progress, we need numbers. Hopefully though we will get enough in and let go of the overpaid/underplayed players.

Comment #22Jesus man, take your finger off self destruct button!
So what if we arent getting Gamiero and Gervinho. Do you really think those were our only top targets and now that we arent getting them we’re stuck with Carlton Cole et al?
No, we’ve spent a season scouting europe. We’ll have a list as long as my arm of good players.
There isnt only 2 good players in the world you know.
I still think we’re all going to be happy at the end of the window.

Comment #27To be fair we were never going to get Gamiero and if we did it was well known he didnt really want to come, hopefully now we can move onto players who are more realistic and want to wear the shirt, i’m confident on Gervinho tbh. I cant see Arsenal making a bid until Nasri leaves, he wont go because Fabregas might be leaving because they’re completely different players. He knows Tiote and Cabaye at our place and he seems to have dropped the wanting Champions League comments of late.

I would not say Barton is static, he maybe does not have the speed for a winger but he is def not lazy!
Nolan lacks pace but he does have a good football brain and could be very useful for next 1/2 seasons.
What you got to remember is some players take time to settle and therefore it is good to ease them into the squad..
Also I would rather get rid of fringe players and and have our 1st team stay and compete with the new signings for their place. Its the only way a team will really improve.
I know this might be hard with Contract issues and high wages tho…

Comment #38i cant see nufc being anything other than a top 10 club we wont be able to attract the best players because the top 6 are prepared to pay more because of the revenue from the champions league liverpool seem to be gambling millions on getting into the top 4 next season.no way will ashley who likes a gamble take that chance

Comment #40Announced today in the Journal i think that we’ve bid 12M for the Zog.
Perhaps that’s as a result of being knocked back for Gamiero?
It was probably a case of get Gamiero and we can forget anout other targets in the same price range. Lose out and we can still afford the likes of N’Zogbia.
12M is a lot of cash but if it’s what it takes to get him back then so be it.
Love him or hate him the cold reality is that he’s up there in ability with the best that Newcastle can attract right now, and if it’s gonna cost 12M big ones to get him here then get it done.
Can’t be messing about and letting him join the inbreds up the road, or losing out to Liverpool (my new 2nd most hated team)
Cabaye and The Zog would be good buys to start the window off, if we lose out to Gervinho also then unfortunately i can see us going for Shane Long but I would like to another top striker come in if we did take a chance on him.
Someone mentioned Erding? Ba would be decent I think but his dodgy knee would be a gamble to risky for Ashleys liking i fear.
