Newcastle let it be known yesterday, for whatever reason, that they are willing to sell their captain Kevin Nolan to the first club who comes up with £6M.
Kevin Nolan – Newcastle will sell their captain – why?
We don’t understand Mike Ashley, and why he would want to sell one of his best players this summer, especially since Kevin is the captain and has scored 30 goals for Newcastle over these last two seasons.
But that’s the enigma that owns Newcastle United at he moment, and to us it’s yet another weird decision by Londoner Mike Ashley.
But you cannot blame other clubs for now being interested in Nolan, and West Ham have already bid £3M for Kevin, but he would hardly want to take a step down to the Championship next season, even if it meant joining up again with big Sam Allardyce.
Fulham have registered an interest in the player today, as new manager Martin Jol has around £20M to spend in the transfer market this summer, and £6M for Kevin would be a great deal for the London club.
But whether they could match Nolan’s wages could be a problem.
The news is in The Sun, so it could be a made up story – the thinking being that Martin Jol has £20M to spend and Kevin Nolan is available – so why not put the story out – it could even be true.
If Nolan is moving out, then we have to think Newcastle have some other top central midfielders lined up in the summer.
Alan Pardew has already said he will play Ben Arfa as the withdrawn striker next season, and central midfielder Yohan Cabaye should be signed today – so where does the captain play next season is a good question.
But that’s not the way to look at it, because one thing Alan Pardew has to do this summer is to build competition for places at Newcastle, and surely not lose his best players – who are oprven performaers in the Premier League.
But that seems to be what will likely happen, with Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique likely to move out, and Joey Barton too – if Newcastle can persuade Barton to move on, just one year before his contract runs out on Tyneside.
It just seems such a weird situation at Newcastle at the moment, but maybe it’s just us.
Alan Pardew made it known when he came in last December, that he wanted to get the best players signed up to stay at the club – those players principally being Andy Carroll, Joey Barton, Jose Enrique, Cheick Tiote and Joey Barton.
But there’s a decent possibility that only Cheick will still be at the club come September.
Why is that?
