Olivier Bernard was signed for Newcastle in 2000 from French club Lyon, by the great Bobby Robson, and he was on Tyneside for five years before finally retiring in 2007.
Olivier Bernard – while at Newcastle in 2004
Bernard was a decent left-back, and always gave 100% for the side, and today he has waxed lyrical about Newcastle’s new and exciting central midfielder from Lille – Yohan Cabaye.
Olivier did return to Newcastle in September of 2006 when Glenn Roeder was manger, but the Frenchman could never keep fit or capture his old form, and he finally retired from the game in 2007.
Unfortunately, because of his many injuries Olivier now walks with a limp, but he now help fights racism at show racism the red card, which is very worthy cause.
It turns out that Olivier has watched the French International Cabaye a few times, and this is what the still young Bernard, still only 31, had to say about the French International:
“I’ve seen Cabaye play a few times, and I think he’s almost the complete midfield player.” “He’ll do a fantastic job. He’s a tidy player, and a very neat passer of the ball.”
“He rarely loses the ball, and he’s great going forward. He’s a box-to-box player, similar to Kieron Dyer when he came to Newcastle.”
“He’ll organize the side, and would be a very important player for Newcastle.” “He’s nothing like Cheick. I think they would complement each other.”
“Cheick’s very good defensively, but Cabaye plays more the Xavi role at the front of the midfield. He can switch the ball left to right. He’s a very clever player.
“I definitely think he will boss the midfield and get the attacks going, and with Ben Arfa in the team, things are looking good for Newcastle.”
The 25 year-old French International played for France last night, in their 1-0 win in Poland, and he will certainly bolster Newcastle’s midfield options and we could be seeing a Tiote – Cabaye central midfield next seaosn.
The more we learn about Yohan and the more games we watched him play this year for Lille, the more we thought he was a very good technical player, and for just £4.5M he could be one of Newcastle’s bargain buys this summer.
We do expect some big name players to come into Newcastle this summer, but we also expect some signings – like possible Neil Taylor for £1M and 20 year old South Korean striker Ji Dong-Won, to be some savvy transfers Newcastle will complete this summer too.
Those two players are worth £2M in total and both are young in their very early 20s.
How do you think Cabaye will fair at Newcastle next season.

Surely Arsenal and Liverpool can’t recruit everyone. Maybe worth a punt.

agree with you mate when Ireland was at city he looked pure class, but don’t think that he will get back to anywhere near the player he was, would rather see Nolan sold and the money reinvested on someone better than Ireland, but I think we’re into Stephen Taylor territory with this contract stand off

Comment #28I’ve said it many times before that we should go after Clint Dempsey and if we want rid of Nolan than why not try and do a swap, obviously if they rate Nolan at 6m then Dempsey should be atleast 10m so Nolan +4m should land him, Dempsey also wants to leave Fulham and being American I’d love to see a classy player like that in the black & white stripes

Not that I didnt believe you mate just curious haha the report is from the daily fail though which isnt a good sign. Sounds good though there are some gems in the MLS and Pappa is a awesome name haha
carlton@22
Thats probably a better source than a lot of people ho claim to be ‘in the know’ so maybe its true….as I say if Ireland was fit then it would be a decent deal for us and Villa. There was also reports that Nolan didnt get on with Ireland when he was on loan with us
