The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle are in the lead for former West striker and now free agent Demba Ba.
Demba Ba – Newcastle said to be favorites
We have no idea if this is true, but there’s little doubt that the 26 year-old would be a bargain buy, although Newcastle would need to pay a signing-on fee to the player (and his agent?) – that’s how these things seem to be done these days.
The French-born 6’3″ Senegal International had a release clause put into his contract in January, that said if West Ham were relegated he would become a free agent, and like the Yohan Cabaye deal Newcastle closed yesterday, the Magpies are again in for what looks to be a great acquisition, if they can pull this off.
But of course there is a cloud over Demba Ba, because he did fail his medical at Stoke City in January because of a dodgy knee, and Newcastle would have to give the player a stringent medical before they would sign him on.
But manager Alan Pardew is back in Newcastle now and has just and completed the Yohan Cabaye signing yesterday, and he will be keen to bring in more players before the pre-training starts on July 4th, as the manager will want the new players to have a full pre-season at Newcastle.
Ba scored seven goals in 12 games for the Hammers and looked a powerful goal-scoring striker, but he still was unable to save the Hammers from relegation, but he certainly did his bit.
Newcastle would be able to offer the 10 times capped Senegal International a good wage deal, probably spread over four years, which is what the striker is said to be looking for.
Demba Ba may even get the famous number 9 shirt on Tyneside, last worn by local lad Andy Carroll last seaosn, before he left for Liverpool.
Again, we have no idea if this report in the Mirror is true or not – but of course we hope it is.
