Well we suppose it was worth a try – but didn’t come off – as West Ham apparently offered Newcastle just £1M for captain Kevin Nolan last week
Kevin Nolan – West Ham Bid £1M for Newcastle captain
The news is in the People today, but with the offer the London club were willing to all but match the wages Nolan is getting at Newcastle – around £50K/week or a bit more.
Newcastle rejected the offer out of hand, and the news being reported last week was that the offer was for £3M.
But West Ham have to realize they are not in the driving seat when it comes to trying to get Premier League class players like Kevin, to take a step down to the Championship.
Newcastle called the offer derisory, but that’s what they called initial offers for Andy Carroll back in January, and then Liverpool of course came in with a massive £35M, and the local striker was gone.
That could happen to Nolan this summer, and we think Newcastle would accept an offer of anything north of around £4M or £5M – but it still seems ridiculous to us they would be willing to lose such a valuable player both on and off the field.
A Newcastle source told the People:
“Players will be expected to honor their contracts and, if sold, it will only be at a price beneficial to Newcastle United.”
That statement to us is more proof that Newcastle are willing to sell both Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton this summer, if they can get the right price for them.
It seems both are on around £60K/week, and maybe Mike Ashley thinks he can get equivalent players in for a lot less wages than that – and apparently Yohan Cabaye is getting £30K/week in his five year deal.
But it’s a very risky business to sell two of your best players, and of course we almost expect Jose Enrique to also leave the club this summer.
Comments welcome.

Comment #4Time to get rid I think. He’s the captain and if he won’t take an incentive based pay rise, worth up to 10k more a week, where is his ambition? If we haven’t got to the top 7 in 2 years, then something is very wrong and we are stuck with midtable mediocrity forever.
lets be honest Nolan, Smith and barton are a blueprint for fat Sham’s boot boys. Unfit, injury prone, slow and very, very greedy. Cabaye seems to have a lot more class all round. Bring on more of him.

Comment #5My concerns are the noises coming ‘from’ the likes of Enrique and Barton – that they will sit out the final year and walk for free !
Its fine for us to do it but when you are loosing 20M of talent – straigh to the player and agent – it shows you how difficult it is to run a football club.
Whilst accepting that its difficult, FatAsh ahould realise that the EPL is paramount to the sucess of any club. You cant gamble on strikers with dodgy knees and youngsters to suceed – you have to speculate to accumalte

Comment #9rotunda – I am all for performance based contracts – but it seems it was all or nothing – the contract would only kick in on achieving 7th … what happens if we only get 8th?. Coupled with the fact the FatMan and co sell of any promising players the contract would never be activated Surely any performance based contract should be premised on appearances, goals, clean sheets or even passes and tackles – and even deductions for red and yellows. performance

I can’t see Charlie Adam getting a game at Liverpool, so line him up for 6m. Sell Nolan for 6… all is well.

Comment #15As I said in previous post BA has played 97 games in the last 3 years, he’s not injury prone. However there is a risk which means it’s hard to get insurance.
Anyway Nolan, I completely understand why you want to sell our captain, one of the highest earners at the club, if you feel he is not going to play because you are buying what you think are better younger players. He won’t score 12 goals next year if he is on the bench, and he reacted badly when Chris dropped him early in the season, storming off and refusing to be a sub.

Comment #18Little off topic. Dont slate me for this, although some will agree.
Joey Barton needs to be got rid of ASAP. I am well aware of how good he is he was my player of the season. Love him as a footballer.
However after reading his Twatter comments yestderday about average Joe, and a picture of him and Kevin Nolan. Im sorry but he is upsetting the team spirit.
He will have a lot of influence over younger people in the team, and a split in the dresssing room is only a pre season away.
Sorry but he has to go. Yohan Cabaye needs to settle as quickly as possible.

Comment #21Cabaye live on Radio RMC confirmed that it was Pardew that persuaded him to sign with his project of fast attacking football using players like him to accelerate the game. Promised a starting spot in midfield at the beginning of the season. Got great references for Newcastle from all English based French team and especially Zog. Sounds like a nice bloke. Just have to hope that Joey B doesn’t take a dislike to competition & French players. So far, we have Tioté & Cabaye in CM. HBA promised to play off or just behind the striker. Leaves CF, RW, LW to sort. I’d take Zog on the right where he played for Wigan & France. Spiderman & Ferguson can scrap it out on the left if Enrique stays. Gameiro is supposed to sign for PSG in the next days. Erdinc will be available but hasn’t had a good season. Worth a punt as a squad player that could earn his place.
Gosling at RB will be worth a try in pre-season.
Looks promising if Pardew can keep the harmony which may mean letting Barton go. His tweeting is certainly not suggesting that he’s happy. He may be regretting not signing something earlier.

Comment #35All this talk of Scott “the human corkscrew” Parker…he can’t cut it at a big club and I didn’t rate him at all when he was here the first time….a lot of running in circles and not releasing the ball at the correct time…Mark Noble is a better player who would interest me, as it seems we would like to rid ourselves of all the players who have contributed the most in the last two seasons….

Comment #37You all want olan to leave.
I really don`t get that at all.
We can get in some good quality players(Cabaye) but no one knows if they will settle well or get used to the style and speed of the PL within the first season and we need the team to start at full speed as there is no prisoners taken in the PL and we could find ourselves quickly in trouble with injuries etc.
Nolan was top class with 12 goals and some assists along with great defensive play.
If Henderson is worth 20 million then what is Nolan worth?????
