The Daily Mirror is reporting today that Newcastle want to sign left-back Stephen Warnock from Aston Villa.
Stephen Warnock – on his way to Newcastle?
It seems that manager Alan Pardew want tie twice capped England International to replace Spanish U21 International Jose Enrique, who is due to leave Newcastle this summer to some club, and it looks like that club will be Liverpool.
But it’s not clear to us whether Warnock will now want to leave Aston Villa, given that former Birmingham boss
Alex McLeish has only today taken over as manager at Villa.
The news is that Newcastle are willing to pay around £1M for Warnock – and the wages that Stephen is getting at Villa are said to be around £45K/week, which is about that Jose is getting on Tyneside.
The Mirror is also reporting that Kenny Dalglish is trying to close in on a deal for Enrique, with the clubs still looking at valuations of various players Newcastle may take in part exchange, although Paul Konchesky will not be coming the other way.
Warnock will turn 30 in December, but Newcastle also have 19 year-old Shane Ferguson, who is likely to come through even further for the first team next season, and the Magpies are still expected to bring in 22 year-old Swansea left-back Neil Taylor for £1M.
Warnock should provide good experienced cover once Jose moves out of Newcastle, as next season’s Newcastle team looks to be a lot different than last season.
