Leon Best Told He Can Leave Newcastle

The Sun is reporting today that Leon Best has been told by Newcastle that he can leave the club.

Leon Best – told he can leave Magpies

We find this a little surprising, if it’s true, since Leon scored 6 goals in 11 appearances for Newcastle this year, including 9 starts and played very well.

The Ireland striker seemed to improve under Alan Pardew, and hit a great hat-trick in his Premier League debut in Newcastle’s 5-0 hammering of relegated West Ham.

The news is that Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands will stay on Tyneside, but now Leon Best joins 20 year-old London lad Nile Ranger, as strikers who can leave Newcastle this summer.

The Magpies will be hoping Senegal and former West Ham striker, Demba Ba,  can pass his medical today, and sign on for the club, and Newcastle are also after at least one more striker to bring in over the summer.

But with Kevin Nolan having moved on to West Ham in the Championship, and Jose Enrique potentially finally moving soon to Liverpool (what a saga that has been), the squad will be a lot changed next season.

We thought Best deserved a shot at trying to get a first team place at Newcastle, but we suppose he didn’t do enough, if this news is indeed true.

What do you think?

Surely this can’t be true, if we are to get rid of any of the signings in the past year or so then surely it has to be perch first, the lad is useless. just listened to the commentary for the newcastle arsenal game, really makes the hairs or your neck stand on end.

Likewise Andy hope Ed’s doing well 🙂

Or Nufc_mo because no1 will buy him lol

    Lua Lua
    Jose Enrique
    Fraiser Forster
    Krul (IF Not given No1)

13 Players of a squad NOT including untested Youth (Phil Airey etc..)
26/27 if couldnt Sammy Ameobi and Cabaye.
We COULD be shipping half our squad out and we are/were 2nd smallest squad ahead of the relegated Blackpool.

i wanted to see an improvements to the squad, cant see that happening if we ship out all these players. Dont think we will have strength in depth so its one big gamble if it is true. We cannot pin our hopes on the young ones and players coming back from injury so heres hoping they really do have something up their sleeve

This has to be bollocks. Every move Ashley has made (mostly) I can come to some sort of understanding to , but shifting Leon out is bloody crazy, why would we want to sell him when he has proved him self as a potentially prolific goal scorer in the PL, I wasnt upset with Nolan , but this would get my mind ticking , hope to god its the paper talking its usual shtie

    Likewise Nick_9

What we needed was bring in 3/4 Players and sell None, renew contracts with Nolan/Barton/Enrique and release Smith/Campbell/Kuqi.

Or sell ONE big player be that Enrique or someone else but no more than that.

Sorry lads, but at the risk of sounding unpopular, I don’t think too much of best. I do however think he is better than a range of players at the club, ameobi, smith ect.

Can’t understand though why all these players are being sold, without many coming in. Last season we were paper thin, next season could be worse.

I could understand the logic in this if we were planning a big move for an exspensive transfer, Samuel Eto recently said he wants too prove himself in the prem, although theres no chance of him signing for Newcastle whos to say the fatman and pardew are gonna go for it?

I have to admit, this makes no sense to me whatsoever. Best was the one striker I’d hoped we would keep from our current crop. Does anyone know if his wages are particularly high? I don’t think they are, and it’s not as if we’ll get a lot for him. He would have been a damn good back up, and I’d have been quite happy to see him get a chance at a few starts. My hope is that he’s been told he won’t get regular football because we’ve got better striker coming, but if we’ve got Ba and Erdinc coming, that leaves us with Shola and Lovenkrands as back up. Don’t get me wrong, those two aren’t bad as back ups, but I thought we were supposed to building!

I’ll happily take a kick in the teeth from Angryman if we’re not getting better replacements.

    Baffled. Truly baffled.

gorskino10 – mate, Nolan wanted a longer contract which Ashley wasnt willing to give, because we would be lumbered with a alan smith in years to come, but fatter, Im glad Nolan has gone , at the end of the day footballers chat siht all day long about loving the club blah blah , but at the end of the day Demba Ba is quality , I cant wait to see him in black and white! oi Eto wants to come to the PL what you reckon lads ? hahahahaa

Lets be fair its the sun and there is even no logic behind this story.

I like Best, he was never going to be a starter, but hes a good player with good potential, good enough for our bench and to make an impact at times so I hope this story is false.

Davies- your spot on Ameobi and Lovenpants are not good enough,(even as back up) I didnt even like Lovenpants in the Championship , I think Ameobi is a better player than Lovenkrands, but still nither I would keep, we have to keep best , great back up player, and i get the impression that he would be willing to fight for his place

Signed for 1M on about 25k a week, not exactly the high-earner MA is looking to get shot of but maybe he just hasn’t impressed. If you take away his hat-trick he scored 3 goals in 10 games.

Personally would like to see him stay, serious hops.

As much as I will praise Leon For doing a mighty fine job for us last year, any1 with a footballing brain can tell he’s not premiership clAss, sorry but it’s true send him off to west ham for 3 mill n I’ll be happy, but the problem is we need strength in numbers it’s ok selling 6 to buy 3 but once injuries hit where done for

Dazza- your critising Best because he hasnt scored goals against the “top half” teams – well f****c it then we may as well take 70 percent of berbatovs goals away then, I remember Best scored 2 against Arsenal one chalked off, they are a decent team no?

dazza- you cant say that mate, Best scored 2 good goals against Arsenal 1 ruled out , and if we are working on your theory , Berbatov would have about 11 goals!! goals in the PL deserve to be credited no matter who its scored against!

Well, if Leon is shown the door, then there only be two possibilities, three I suppose.

For one, perhaps his wages doesn’t match the age and skill category of Ashley’s. And secondly, this is the revelation of alan pardew’s ambitions – to have his OWN team. alan pardew’s Toon army, winning team, perhaps the latter is IMO IN HIS DREAM!!!!
(Note that I always write a person name or team name with a large case first, that is when I respect the person or team in question. When I write with all lower case, I consider that person or team ‘lower’ than a monkey!!)
I have NO respect whatsoever for alna perdew – or whatever is spelled. He gave POOR results and only talk B.S. He only good at one thing, that is licking the B U T T off MA and DL!!

And that’s the 3rd possible reason for Leon’s and other fellows who had gone or almost gone before him. People like Chris Hughton, Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, Jose Enrique, Jonas Gutierrez…they don’t kiss MA and DL’s arsess, they DO THEIR BEST to perform ON and OFF the pitch. The latter refers to their making efforts to glue the team and not blowing their bosses arssess – at least not like AP in the casino!! BAHHHHHHH!!!!

    God save the Toon

jamesnufc86 point taken but I am not petitioning for his goals to be taken off the record. I simply raise it as a discussion point. He scored 3 goals against west ham in a 5-0 game. Not exactly the performance I want to base my squad for next season on, that’s all.

Again I think he deserves a fair crack and think he has a chance at establishing himself but I an under no illusions that we need better players than Leon Best to become a top half force as Pardew lays it out.

i thought ashley was going to bring in quality players there is nothing wrong in that but if the squad only have 11 quality players and then if any one of those get injured then we must rely on the quantity of the squad not quality that was the problem we had last season and i guess we will be having the same problem this season i think it will be a lot worse since we are shipping out so many players and bring in only half the players we sold

Nolan as slow as a cart horse, not fast enough for the prem, good leader and grateful for everything he has done for newcastle united but if we want to push up the table we need more pace and creativity about the side. As for best, would not be bothered if we got rid of him. Just isn’t the class of player we require if we want to push on into a europe position. Both championship players in my opinion.

Dazza – Yea I agree, Leon does deserve a proper crack at the whip – hes had one and worked for the Turkish immigration board!! but I understand what u are saying he isnt a proven PL striker and we def do need one more in after Demba , but I still think it would be harsh on the lad to be put automatic 3rd choice

What i dont understand is our summer budget is solely the Andy Carroll money, supposedly havings to pay fees and wages out of the 35 M. So that means before he was sold we had no summer transfer budget! Ridiculous. There is still some hope of signing a few decent players to an already thin squad. Can you imagine if Carroll was still here and we could sign no one this summer! I would choose whats happening this summer over keeping Carroll and signing no one anyday!!
Also, i WANT Enrique to leave. He looses the ball to much when he’s going forward and tries to be clever around the box for me. Thats ok in a top 4 team he would suit them but not ours. We need more solid fullbacks.
For 12-15 M for Enrique we could buy a new left and right back in Alan Hutton for RB for 5 M and Wayne Bridge 4 M or loaned… or maybe Warnock 2 M for LB. Then if we get Neil Taylor for 1 M we’ll be sorted for full backs forvyears to come with Shane Ferguson etc.
Or maybe we should keep him….?

This smells of horse shit! Absolute made up crap. The media has no clue who we are signing nor do they have a clue who we think will be in the team next season. Best will be here and this whole report smells of desperation journalism. No facts whatsoever. They have yet to get any facts on this beloved club of ours and yet they report this cockamamy shit. The media finds out their info at the same time we do. Period!

from the way i see it, fatman is getting rid of all the players we (as fans) would liked to have kept, and keeping the players , alot of fans thought should be sold, he seems to know what we want and do the opposite, he is deffo taking the p,,,, having a laugh at our expense, we must not buy tickets and line his pockets, and before you start your “must support the team ” rant , remember this, .. we havnt got one , if we had boycotted last season when we should have, maybe just maybe he may have got yhe point and sold up, a buisnessman running a buisness with no money coming in would want to get rid, ive just had enough of this t,,,,t for what its worth i have tore my ticket up until HE has gone. sad

Level 7 hero – totally agree with you. I do like Jose alot and think hes pretty dam good but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we sold him for 12-15mil. Bring in Naylor, Warnock but not Bridge..i think hes well past it. Get in another lad at fullback and then if some of the likes of Tranquillo Barnetta, Blaise Matuidi, Nzog, and Mevlut Erding come in we will be looking great in my opinion.

    Got to keep Jonas!
    Best deserves to stay also.

I wouldnt really be gutted if Ba was his replacement and Newcastle are still brining in two more Presumably french forwards aswell…..

Especially if we can make a decent profit on Best… we bought him at 1mill right? Selling him for a fee of Maybe 3-4mill+ and id say, Good Business… That is ofcourse if we get two younger forwards (after signing Ba)

You can Arfue that Ba and Best have a similar Goal tally, 7 for BA and 6 for Best in their first season in the premier League….(However Best has started more games for Newcastle 24 – Including Coca Cola League, in an arguably more motivated team then West Ham)

Ba is only a year Older and 1 1/2 inches taller then Best and is coming for Free. With Best out the door thats arguably a free 3-4million for the Club to Hopefully Spend in the Transfer Window…

This is all based on the assumption that we will still be bringing in two forwards after Ba is Confirmed….
