Joey Barton has just twelve months left on his current Newcastle contract, and the club have said they will not be offering him a new deal.
Joey Barton – at Royal Ascot last week
He looks like the little Dodger in Oliver Twist!
Joey wants to stay on Tyneside for next season, and he will become a free agent next summer, and could then get himself a good deal at some club at that time.
And Joey is happy that Newcastle are showing some ambition in the summer transfer market, as they have already signed three good players for £4.5M and have sold one player for £4.5M – so nothing has yet been spent in net terms – yet.
However that one player who has been sold is Joey’s pal and former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan, which came as a huge shock to the vast majority of Newcastle fans.
But the combative midfielder is happy with the players who have already arrived on Tyneside – Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Yohan Cabaye – and also he seems happy with some others Newcastle are being linked with.
This is what Barton told Sky Sports News today:
“I’ve heard a few rumors about players getting signed and they seem to be good quality players, so if they can add to what we’ve already got at the football club, then so be it.”
“I’m employed to play football, not to make decisions about the transfer market. Let’s just hope for everyone’s sake they can find a few more Cheick Tiotes.”
“After bouncing back and having a decent season I want to push on and make up for lost time in my career through injury or stupidity. “
Barton has endured a torrid time of things in his football career, and that includes a spell in jail in the summer of 2008, when he was a Newcastle player.
Joey had his best season ever at Newcastle last season, when he played 35 times for the Magpies and scored 5 goals, and was a force both on and off the field for the Newcastle side.
With Kevin gone, there’s a possibility Joey could become captain of Newcastle next season, but we have this feeling that Ashley and LLambias will try to offload Barton this summer – but we’ll see how that one turns out.
Joey is ambitious as ever and has never yet played in the Champions League, and he talked about those ambitions today:
“I want to play at the highest level,” “I’ve not been fortunate enough to play in the Champions League yet, I’ve played in the UEFA Cup a couple of times, but I want to test myself now.”
“After bouncing back and having a decent season I want to push on and make up for lost time in my career through injury or stupidity.”
“I’m hungry to succeed and that can’t happen soon enough and it would be great if it’s at Newcastle.”
We’d really like to see Joey stay at the club, but that seems very difficult now that Newcatsle have let Kevin Nolan go, and it seems that Jose Enrique may join Arsenal soon too.
But as we’ve found out so many times, anything is possible in life, and anything is possible in football too.
We’d like to see Joey further mature as a person, and then maybe he can convince the powers that be at the club they should keep him on Tyneside.
And certainly, he’s still a huge fan favorite, for the guts and skills he continues to show for the Newcastle team – and it will probably help Joey if he gives up that Twitter account too.
What do you think?

Comment #2Just logged on to see we’ve signed sylvain marveaux completely out of the blue. Great signing! Wondering whether it would be easier for the boards sake just to offer Barton a new deal. It’s pretty much the only way they can ensure he isn’t disruptive as i don’t think he’ll be open to leaving to other sides like Villa etc. Give him a 3 year deal with an option of a 4th depending on himself and the club.

Comment #9I really hope we get Zog. With Marveaux in, and if Zog joins, that may mean bye-bye Jonas.

I’d be happy if we get Zoggy for less than 9M, anything over thats a tad steep.
Now just need the pinnicle no9 and maybe Def and were done for Summer 🙂
Cwarr has obviouslly seen these tweets and added a bit to make it seem like he broke the news.

Comment #15Zoggy is the 1 player i am desperate for us to sign. If players such as Colo should leave he understands what the club is all about and can hammer it in to his french pals.

Comment #24i think its quite hysterical how bitter Liverpool really are…. still spouting sh1t about this failed medical…. they just cant accept they were 2 busy fannying about and we took our chance and signed him up. I for one…hopes next season he smashes a few at the kop end and wears a t-shirt which he shows in a celebration saying “i think it’s you who needs the medical”
