I’ve just woken over here in the US, and I’m still sore from the five hour surgery last Monday morning, and it’s only 3:07 am on a Saturday morning – but it’s already a beautiful weekend with news that Newcastle have captured French midfielder Sylvan Marveaux.
Sylvain Marveaux – a Newcastle player
The 25-year-old is a free agent and it looked like he would sign for Liverpool over the last couple of days, but it seems – somehow – Newcatsle have signed the player.
Make no mistake about it – this is a great acquisition by Newcastle.
This is what Newcastle put out on their web=site this morning.
============
Midfielder Sylvain Marveaux, 25, has agreed terms to join Newcastle United on July 1 from Rennes, after agreeing a five-year-deal at St. James’ Park.
The former France Under 21 International joined Rennes as a 15-year-old in 2001, making his first team debut in 2006. Since then he has made over 100 appearances for Les Rouges, scoring 16 goals from attacking or left midfield roles.
And this is what a delighted Newcatsle manager Alan Pardew said:
“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs.”
” He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.:
:It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”
============
The left sided midfielder is on Tyneside to complete the move, but this is a coup for Newcastle.
The news is official because it’s been posted on the Newcastle official site and this follows yesterday’s signing of striker Demba Ba – again as a free transfer.
Sylvain can play a variety of positions in midfield, but is mostly utilized as a left-sided midfielder or an attacking midfielder.
Marveaux is a former French under-21 international having earned 11 caps (4 goals) with the team from 2006–2008.
He joined Rennes in 2006 and played 118 times for the French side with 20 goals, but had an injury interrupted season in 2010-2011 playing only 10 times with one goal.
The player underwent a medical at Liverpool two days ago, and there was news yesterday that he had failed the medical due to some groin injury, so we should hear more about that today, as this surprising news unfolds.
There was news over the last two days that Liverpool were about to unveil him as a new Liverpool signing, but that never happened, and it could be that Newcastle pounced, gave him a medical and he passed it.
We should soon get to know what the medical condition was that he failed at Liverpool.
But this is another great singing by the cl;ub who are coming adept at getting great deals – we wonder when we;ll spend some of the Andy Carroll money? 😀
Comments very welcome.

Comment #2This guy comes with a long list of serious injuries, only reason Liverpool didn’t sign him was because he failed the medical there. He only managed 11 appearances last season. Bit worrying!

Comment #5But after June, we may be able to apply for playing in Ligue 1.
What we have left to sign:
No. 9
Full backs and Center backs
Right wing (if Abeid is not a right wing, so to speak)

Comment #7Out of the blue. He’s a brilliant signing and only in 2010 Chelsea and Manchester United and Arsenal were chasing him. I hope he put his injuries behind him. He’s extremely creative.
French Revolution indeed at SJP.

Comment #15Don’t get your hopes up.
He played only 10 Ligue 1 games last season.
He seems to be VERY injury prone, which is never good in the EPL.

Comment #17Get to bed!! Another shrewd bit of business by the fat shite. Hell of a signing but still nit spending any of the carroll money. I will come in my pants if they sign Sturridge, for me he is a better player than Carroll, so 15/20mill for him us a bargain in comparison.

Comment #22Loads of bitter bindippers on twitter saying he failed medical and that’s why we got him. All hash tagging crazyAshley. Hmm…..I think there’s less risk in this one than 35m on a player with half a seasons experience and a dodgy thigh. But hey ho. still great news. Check his stats for 2009/10 loads of goals and assists and managed 38 games. Only last year he had a groin injury.

Comment #23Wow that one wasn’t even predicted, maybe some of us on here would have liked that to happen but surely weren’t expecting it. Bet Liverfool don’t like that too much.

Comment #24According to Coozy, 3 players booked into the Hotel. 1 Being Ba, the other presumably Marveux… so there could still be more good news!
Not even the slightest clue who the 3rd lad could be, especially since this Marveux Signing literally came outta nowhere!

Comment #25We are doing shrewd business right now. Brilliant signings by paying absolutely nawt. If we indeed decide to splash the cash i wonder which world class player is he going to be.
We could have the entire french first 11 in our team at this rate.

Comment #26Good news but what does worries me is that we seem to have landed him because he failed a medical at Liverpool. We have enough injuries already I hope him and Ba won’t be to often on the injury list.

Comment #29@alkinou // Jun 18, 2011 at 8:19 AM
Marveaux has personally said he passed the medical and that was not the reason whatsoever. He said they failed to agree terms. Liverpool are just sore losers right now because they have splashing the cash but yet look a weaker team than us at the moment.

Comment #32he didnt have a medical at liverpool, he rejected them after they couldnt agree terms.. btw lads he isnt injury prone.. hes had 1 injury which was bothering him for a while when he was playing and his club put him through the opp earlier in year so it wouldnt jeapodise a transfer for him.. tht was a report when he had it anyways

Comment #33The great thing is we’ve only spent 1 mill for three players. Thats some fantastic players and great piece of business. And i’m quite sure we’ll be using allot out the 35£ million to strengthen even further. Lets hope Erdinc signs up this weekend 😉
Cmon Enrique, our ambition has been shown, now sign the damned contract!
