Aston Villa Bid £3M For Newcastle’s Joey Barton

First of all it’s a Sunday today so there are likely to be many rumors in the papers.

Joey Barton – Alex McLeish interested

The Daily Star is reporting that new Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is ready to bid for Newcastle’s Joey Barton.

Alex will put in an initial £3M and get Newcastle’s reaction,  which is probably to tell Villa what the price is to take Joey to Villa Park.

Joey was working on a new contract at Newcastle,  but then recently his agent, Willie McKay, was informed that Newcastle had decided not to offer the Liverpudlian a new deal.

But it seems  Joey wants to see out his last year on Tyneside, before becoming a free agent next summer.

We think Newcastle will be willing to do a deal on Joey this summer, and it may take as little as £4M for a deal to be struck.

Joey has been at Newcastle for four years,  but has had an injury plagued time of things at Newcastle.

That was until last season when he made 35 appearances for the Magpies with 5 goals.

Before that, he had played only 47 appearances and three goals in his first three seasons, since arriving for £5.8M from Manchester City in the summer of 2007.

Joey had said last week that he would only leave Newcastle for a team that competes in the European Champions League, and Villa don’t meet that requirement, although Arsenal do, and he’s been linked with The Gunners today.

Comments welcome.

If Joey wants Champions League, then he won’t agree to a contract with a sub par team.

Somebody is gonna come in for Joey before the end of August. Might as well be Villa.
Looks like all this ‘I’m the best in England’ was more about contracts than getting to wear the 3 Lions. Without Nolan, Joey becomes even more important. All these French lads are all very well but what happens when one of them loses the ball? Even with clown boots on I can’t see Tiote doing it all on his own. He misses a third of the season anyway.
Unless we are suddenly to bring Barca style to Barrack Road we could be in for some hidings and see some homesick foreign players.
So far there are more leaving our threadbare squad than coming in. Typically, its not the Sholas and McLovens but the Bests and Rangers and LuaLuas going first. Why?
In defence its not Perch and Smith out first but more likely Colo and Jose.
I fear for a team which doesn’t look like Pardew has designed it, full of rather lightweight, delicate, attacking midfielders suffering culture-shock.

    @Sav

So far we have brought 4 people in, (with 2 more possibly within the next few days)
    IN:
    – Abeid
    – Cabaye
    – Ba
    – Marveux

    Out:
    Nolan

You seem to include (our players) who are only RUMORED to be on the way out, in your “players leaving”.

By that Logic, surely you must then include every player we are RUMORED to be after into our “Players Coming IN” category.

Nothing is official, until its on the Official website, or if Skysports post’s it.

Sunday papers…yawn. Noticed over the last few hours more and more nonsense has been posted and probably due to the Sunday rags.

Can’t see Wenger being interested in Barton but would certainly understand Villa’s interest and I’d be gutted if he does leave.

Taking longer n longer to get through these post… 4 am bloody hell.

Sav, I agree with everything you are saying and have just posted on the Chron blog with sentiments that are similar. We need to retain our experienced English pro’s because they are the backbone of the team. When the going gets tough, you know what.

I just hope a Marveaux-type of transfer is gonna happen by the same time today.

Who can replace Nolan and Barton (if Englishmen) by the way, realistically?

I can see this being the starting squad so far..
    Harper
    Simpson-S.Taylor – Collocini- N.Taylor
    Barton- Tiote- Cabaye-Marveuax(Jonas)
    Ben Arfa
    Ba
Looks like a good squad but too many changes can result in bad team chemisty may take a while for the team to gel

If Villa up their offer to 5 mil !

Then i would take it and get rid ! Even if it would upset a lot of people! Both him and Nolan are reported as turning down generous new contracts!

We are in the process of completely overhauling the first eleven! He only has a year left on his contract and will probably leave on a free then anyway!
Get as much as we can for him and let him go!

Barton will have some fantastic offers come this time next year, I don’t see him leaving unless a top club is in for him.

It would be good to keep him for another season for us fans anyway. We never know how those new players from France will adopt.

We have enough midfielders as it is….

    Central Midfielders:
    – Cabaye
    – Barton
    – Gosling
    – Guthrie
    – Smith
    – Tiote
    – Vuckic

    Wingers:
    – Jonas
    – Arfa
    – Marveux
    – Ferguson
    – Raylor
    – Abeid
    – LuaLua (hasnt been sold yet…)

14 Midfielders at this moment in time

Also might still be bringing in another Midfielder/winger
i.e Barnetta/Nzogbia if rumors are true.

JB will likely be interested in the move if he gets offered a deal similar to Nolan.

If he stays with us for the next season, he’ll leave on a free, costing us the £3 million transfer fee plus £3 million in wages.

Is it worth it to us to spend £6 million to keep JB for the next season ? I think not.
Even based on his past (very good) performances, especially as he would likely be ‘winding down’.

    Toonincheek,

I am a fan, not a club director. Thus I am greedy about things on the field.

Don’t see how spending 6 mils on Barton will cost us anyway. By the way, have you received your shares from the sale of Andy Carrol’s? 😀

    Widowmaker,

I’m a fan the same as you, as I’m sure you understand well enough.

I just think the £6 mil would be better spend elsewhere.
And I have reservations about the influence a strongly opinionated JB would have over his last season over a team full of new players.

I hope we will ALL receive ‘shares’ from the AC sale through new players, though that remains to be seen.

    toonincheek,

    I know, just kidding. 😀

I don’t mind signing free agents as long as they will improve the squad. So you can imagine I am reasonably happy with recent signings.

However, we must also realise that you don’t often get the best or the most suited players when you spend all your attentions in getting a bargin. That’s what often happened to us in a local supermarket.

Sometimes a little investment will be needed and I hope the board will find a balanced way of building up a new squad.

Having said that, I agree with you on the JB part. I also have my reservations on him. It’s just a shame that he couldn’t talk and act as diplomatic as Nolan does.
