It was a surprise on Friday night when Newcastle seemed to move like greased lightning to bring Sylvain Marveaux to Newcastle, and not only give him a medical, but also sign the player on a five year deal around 2:00 am Saturday morning.
Sylvain Marveaux in Newcastle dressing room
It wasn’t clear on Saturday morning whether the player had actually failed his medical at Liverpool, since he took it and Liverpool fans were awaiting word the free agent had been singed.
Bu it didn’t happen and Liverpool have said nothing, but the Newcastle medics were completely satisfied with Sylvain’s groin, which is what apparently bothered the Liverpool medical team.
But hey, credit to Newcastle for moving so fast when they saw their opportunity.
The player himself was reported yesterday morning in the Evening Chronicle, to be more than a little annoyed that Liverpool were inferring he had failed the medical – in fact they reported he was furious about it.
And the 25 year-old is adamant he did not fail the medical and is perfectly fit following groin surgery in February.
The 25 year-old told the French Daily L’Equipe last night:
“Frankly, those rumors aren’t anything,” “I am perfectly fit, and capable of playing again.”
“I resumed individual training sessions at Rennes late last season and I could have played the last match if the club wanted.”
“I am a little disgusted to read rumors like that because I know it could affect the rest of my career.”
Sylvain will have plenty of time to show the Liverpool club that they have missed out on an excellent player.
Newcastle will have three players coming back in pres-season from long injuries, and Sylvain will now join Frenchman Ben Arfa and England 21 star Dan Gosling on the comeback trail for the club on July 4th, when the lads report back for training.
It’s great to have Marveaux on Tyneside, and Newcastle are showing they can move very fast in the transfer market these days – when they have to.
Wonder when we’ll spend any real money in the transfer market?
For what it’s worth the rumors last night were that Newcastle had agreed a fee for Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia and may be Charles could be the next player through the door.
They could simply be made-up rumors of course, but getting Charles back on Tyneside would be a good deal for the Magpies, even if they have to shell out £10M for the French International winger.

Comment #6Hope the rumours of Carlton Cole and Reocoker arent accurate. Im sure Carr could find much better players than those for the money they would cost. If Jose is to leave i hope he doesnt leave it until it’s to late in the window to find a replacement. If goes to a prem club i think we should aim for a player plus cash deal. Same with any target we are going for, if we can offload a player we dislike and reduce the amount we pay for a new recruit then great.

Comment #7with regards to pardews statement..“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs. He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.” – Newcastle manager Alan Pardew..he hasnt played since november seems as if pardew doesnt have a say who we buy in the sense he could of only seen him on you tube

Comment #10Pardew doesnt mean he has been watching Marveaux and scouting him for some while, he means he has been keeping an eye on his contract situation and his transfer situation.

Comment #17true Andy just shows you dont have to spend millions ,i think a team of players on roughly the same wage will have more harmony than the one when we got relegated with some on 120k others on 20k

Comment #18Belfast so you should haha. And Tony i agree, Tottenham are ran the same way as we are and it isn’t doing them any harm. They have a wage cap like us. Read Modric is only on 40k a week there!

Comment #19Unsure on a number, wonder why Ba was given a number but Cabaye and Marveaux dont have one yet. Club must be waiting to see if Jonas and Barton can be sold.

Comment #20Graham carr has been watching games in france, holand, germany and belgium for a few years nw(in the interview with the sunday sun he said he had been in france alot). A chief scout watches games and gets a list of players then the manager says yes or no. Tiote was a graham carr find and houghton said yes, marveaux/cabaye/abeid were carr finds and paedew has said yes. We were linked with marveaux months ago so pardew must of knew about the deal.
Graham carr is finding gems and pardew has alot of trust in his judgement on players after the way tiote has turned out, he has said so in alot of interviews.

Comment #21i mentioned in an earlier post cabaye, ben arfa, and marveaux all played together at french under 21 level and i think matuidi did as well ,on that score the rumours about him coming might not be too far off.we could have four players that have played together before which would help with them settling

Comment #22I noticed on Skybet that Newcastle are 6/4 favourites to sign Berbatov that would be dreamland and we are second favourites at 3/1 i think to sign Defoe if we could pull one of these off then that would be Fantastic.

Comment #24Tony: Parfew states that the clubs been watching him! That could of been before November or is that not a possibility as far as you are concerned?
It looks like the whole team is going to be different come 13 August! Most of the positions are gonna have new faces in them!
Bad move getting rid of Collo to Seville though, if there,s any truth in that story!
Hope not!
RBC Rosendaal in Holland went bust last week and are reported here as having had a vein of talent in their youth academy! Most of the top Dutch teams are sniffing around with a vieuw to grabbing some of that talent, which is all, so to say “going for a song”, might be worth us having a sniff! Missed opportunity if we don,t !
Also rumours that one of our so called targets, once upon a time, Wijnaldum will be on his way from Feyenoord to PSV Eindhoven in the summer, would of been a good signing for us?
But then again there are so many players being linked at the moment, its difficult to see who we are going for and who not.
We do seem to be very active in comparison to the rest just recently. What has,nt changed though is the communication of news to the fans as you just don,t what to believe!

Comment #26Do we actually need to fork out 10mill for Zog or another high profile player?
I think our scouts have shown they are more than capable of finding the best possible players for nothing.
Zog is a great player but the way things are going I wouldn’t be surprised or bothered if we didn’t spend 7 figure sums on players for a long time.
