With the rather surprising news that Jonas Gutierrez will be made available this summer, it looks more and more like this summer will be a massive clear-out of players at Newcastle.
Alan Smith – can leave on a free transfer
If this news is true, it would seem that Newcastle have decided they have made full use of the players who stayed with the club following relegation.
It’s that group of players who helped Newcastle get immediately promoted, but it seems they can now leave the club, as Newcastle build a new squad to challenge for a top eight place in the Premier League.
There’s not much loyalty there on the side of Newcastle, to be sure.
It would appear the list of players who are available to be moved on this summer now include Steve Harper, Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Smith, Jose Enrique, Jonas Gutierrez and Joey Barton.
It seems the club is only keen on keeping Jose Enrique of that list of players on Tyneside, but of course he seems to want to leave!
Those players were the kernel of the Championship winning side of a year ago, but it seems Newcastle are now ready to let them leave.
The fact those players are all on very good wages, will not go unnoticed.
In addition to the above six, James Perch, Nile Ranger, Leon Best, Wayne Routledge and Kazenga LuaLua can also leave.
That’s 11 players who can leave the club this summer, and we’ve already seen Sol Campbell, Sefki Kugi and captain Kevin Nolan leave Newcastle this summer.
It doesn’t mean all these players will leave either, because Newcastle may not get sufficient interest from other clubs for all of them, and being on big wages could prove a detriment to them leaving Newcastle before September rolls around.
But this could signal a huge change in the Newcastle squad for next season, and too much changes, especially when you lose the leaders of the club, can be very dangerous and unsettling.
We have to say we are more than a little surprised this is happening this summer at Newcatsle.
What do you think about this?
