News today that new Birmingham boss Chris Hughton, wants to take Danny Guthrie to the Midland club.
Danny Guthrie – worth more than £1M
Chris will know all about the 24 year-old central midfielder, who can also play on either wing, having coached him at Newcastle for almost three years.
Chris joined Kevin Keen in February of 2008, after being sacked with Martin Jol the previous October from Spurs, but the bid is reported to be only around £1M, which seems a bit low.
Chris’ number one job at Birmingham is not surprisingly to get the side promoted just as soon as possible, back to the Premier League, preferably next season.
And Hughton has agreed a 12-month rolling contract, which is what Bibby Robson was on during his time as manager of Newcastle United.
This is what Chris had to say after his unveiling as the new manager yesterday in Birmingham:
“We are going into an extremely competitive Championship and, with the players set to return for pre-season training soon, I need to get into the job straight away. I’m really relishing it.”
“For as long as I’ve been in football the name Birmingham City has been right up there. It is what I regard as a real football club with passionate supporters.”
Guthrie joined Newcatsle back in the summer of 2008, for around £3M from Liverpool, when Kevin Keegan was still the manager, but Newcatsle would want at least their money back, if they decide to let him go this summer.
Danny’s four year contract at Newcastle runs out next summer, and there’s some debate as to whether he’s done enough to earn a new contract at Newcastle.
And with a number of new players arriving this summer on Tyneside, it could be time for Danny to seek pastures anew, and away from Newcastle.
Danny has appeared 85 times for the Magpies with 7 goals.
What do you think?

The lad is a great squad player, but i reckon he will get barely any chance to shine next season with the current crop of Central Midfielders we have!
Wouldnt mind him staying, but reckon a move away is the best option for him.

Comment #5Hes a decent squad player like but with the amount of CM’s we already have, plus we might be after Matudi aswell I just cant see him getting anywhere near the first team next season.
It should take more than £1m to get him though. Maybe around £3m-£4m.

Nah Man, If Raylor doesnt mind being a squad player for another season he could come in handy.
A versatile player that can play in Rm, Rb, Cm.
With Barton looking to be on the way out, Jonas would be our main Right footed Right winger, every other winger is left footed. Also with barely any cover for Simmo, Raylor could come in handy.
Possible Right wingers (Right footed)
– Jonas
– Raylor
– Barton
Right backs:
– Simmo
– Raylor
– Saylor
– Tavernier
Perch wont make the bench…

Comment #11Persoanlly I wouldnt mind Guthers leaving if it meant we would give Vuckic a chance or signed a replacement.
I know there’s quite a bit of support for him on this blog but perosnally i think he’s the type of player who looks great in the Championship and lost in the Premier. He rarely plays back to back games and when he does play he’s never that effective.
£3M for him would be decent money and i’d get shot. A bit like Best really. Decent squad players but we could do much better in my opinion.
Only sell him if we have other plans/players in mind.

Comment #20Really big fan of Guthrie.
I think he’d really show his class playing week in week out.
Against West Brom he showed what he’s about. Top box to box player with a cracking shot and his range of passing is the best we have!

But selling Best and Guthrie would seem ridiculous to me. They’re both on low wages, and are very good backup.
UNLESS they have asked for first team football. In which case, it’s not fair to keep them.

I think the thing with N’zogbia is he is desperate to come back but his agent is Willie Mckay and he’s well known to be one of the worst agents around for lining his own pockets.
I’m sure Zoggy would’ve accepted the £60k a week we supposedly offered, but its Mckay probably making him hold out, see if he can get more.
But we all know MA offers you one deal, if you don’t like it he won’t be offering another one.

Comment #34Danny Guthrie is a decent central midfielder who knows how to pass the ball. At the moment, we have Barton, Cabaye, Tiote and Gosling in central midfield. I am not including Alan Smith because I do not rate him.
Barton may play on the right wing if we do not sign a proper right winger. Tiote may get a few games off by collecting too many yellow cards.
With such scenarios, we only have Gosling and Cabaye in central midfield. It will be good to have Guthrie around as a squad player. He can still develop to become a top player. He is young, hard working and matches our club philosophy.

Comment #35I agree with toondownsouth. Against West Brom he was outstanding, until pardew made those crazy substitutions. He is a technically gifted player who has suffered from constant niggling injuries this year and sometimes lost his bottle when he came in for the odd match.
Dont forget in the championship he was our main provider of crosses, through balls and chipped in with some vital long range efforts. You could say this means hes a championship player but i think hes shown (even in the season we got relegated) that he can be a quality player in the epl. Would be a great signing for hughton but id rather keep him as a squad player.
As for raylor, i try to like him but he is not good enough in the epl at all. Set piece specialist? i know hes scored a couple but did u see his FIVE free kicks against west brom? all abysmal! and how many times do his crosses hit first man?! He cant defend (got torn to shreds against chelsea in cup), and single handedly cost us about 4 games with sloppy passes and poor challenges that led to goals in the relegation season.
Id keep em both, but Raylor as back up for the backup!

Ha-Ha all the way to Portugal for an A4 list of free’s.
He’ll bring it back, framed in marble with unbreakable glass…
Place it pride of place in the board room for Ashley and Lambias to discuss while scoffing all day breakfasts and pints of cheap lager.

Comment #37Stuart – I think the problem with the N’Zogbia thing is more the pathetic carry on between the 2 owners. He’s desperate to come back but the way Ashley and Whelan are with each other, they’ll both be being stubborn trying to get one up on the other through the deal. Couldn’t believe it when Whelan came out complaing that Bolton had moved the goal posts on the Al Habsi price, after him asking £3m more off us for N’Zogs. I think personally, the fact that he’s asking more form us, has made Ashley look elsewhere, and would be very very suprised if we were still to sign him

This isnt true mate. I thought the same, but apparently Nzogbia is no longer represented by Mr McKay. He uses a lawyer nowerdays, so ive read.
