Spanish Eyes On Newcastle’s Jonas Gutierrez

There is news this morning that a number of club are becoming interested in Newcastle’s Argentine international, Jonas Gutierrez.

Jonas Gutierrez – on his bike this summer?

Since left-winger Sylvain Marveaux was signed last Saturday, Newcastle have let it be known that Jonas is available for transfer.

And the news in The Sun today is that Jonas could see himself returning to Spain this summer, with both Atletico Madrid and Seville said to be interested in the 20 times capped Argentine International.

Jonas was signed for an undisclosed fee three years ago from Real Mallorca, and ithat fee was probably close to £5M.

Rome-based Lazio are also said to be keen on the Argentine winger, but The Sun is reporting that Jonas would prefer a move back to Spain, and we have to assume that means his Italian is not too good.

We would expect Newcastle to be able to get around £6M for a player who has become popular on Tyneside, and he has played 113 times for Newcastle with 7 goals.

What do you think?

I dont want to sell him at all like. Theres no point buying quality if we’re just replacing the quality we already have, thats not the best way to build a competitive squad.

Tell them to go whistle if its anything less than £10m, I know he’s not worth that but I’d only sell him if someone is stupid enough to bid that much.

Whilst a frustrating player at times, I think Jonas has real ability to break down a defence. I would rather keep him, however, if they do offer big wedge, then he’s replaceable. With a fit squad I cant see him playing on the left wing, so I think he may be utilised on the Right wing next season.

Another one out the door? When are people going to realise that the Buckinghamshire barrow boy just wants to run our club like a cockney knocking shop. I would not spit on Ashley if he was on fire!!!!

Aye, that Aguero fella looks like a good promising cub. Maybe start him with the reserves eh???

Anyhow- I’d keep Jonas but I’d play him in central midfield though. When he’s in that position I think he can control the game a lot better and is more dangerous. He’s played there for us a few times and is far more effective than Guthrie coming off the bench. Not a starter what with new signings but used the right way could be very effective

we can’t be letting jonas go so easily. jonas end product is extremely poor and for a winger who is cutting inside, his scoring ratio is very very poor. but he has incredible speed and is willing to take players on and works very hard.

we can’t let him go unless we have a replacement as good as him ready. he’s good for depth. we must keep him.

Gutierrez is the kind of player fans wont appreciate until hes gone, in the same way milner and nzog werent until they left. Hes marked by 2 players in every game, always gets kicked and never stops running, wins countless freekicks in dangerous areas and takes a decent corner when given a chance, always available to recieve the ball and takes pressure off the defence, recieves alot of abuse from fans and never complains. Good player that we would miss if hes sold, i dont think he will be sold going off he has said in the past he dosent want to return to spain and only wants to move to italy in a few years time.

09nufc09 – exactly, just like Milner did. He should stay and be played on the right when Marveaux is on the left.

i’m now confused, a couple of articles ago everyone was saying routledge isnt good enough he’s found his level in the chamionship and we must get rid… yet people are saying we must keep guitierez because he’s will to have a go at people despite the fact his end product is appauling and he cant shoot for toffee. Spiderman has a ratio of one goal every 16games from the wing for us, routledge is 1 in 11, he has more assists, is younger and is more than willing to have a go at his man. Not to mention the fact we would get like 1m for routledge if we sold him yet we could get 6m for guitierez… i’m not following

Totally agree with the comments.Jonas is a handful for any team which have to double up to stop him and he also plays every game and is rarely injured. The new additions could easily bring out the best.massive mistake if this guy leaves.

    NO WAY!

Jonas for a start played EVERY league game for us last season and lasted the full 90 for most of them.

His fitness levels are UNBELIEVABLE and his ability to get defenders to back down has been of so much use to the likes of Carroll and Nolan so that they have space in the box. He’s usually always doubled up on and even then, seems to always be able to find Jose bombing down the left flank.

His crossing isn’t great from the left but he gives so much to the team it’s a joke!

Do you honestly think Pardew would have played him there for a whole season if he wasn’t that good?

This mavreaux guy unless he has a fantastic cross/can score a heap of goals from out there is going to have a job at replacing Spidey!

Angryman… There are no facts to back up your argument, businesses are run to make a profit, so far we have cost mike ashley anywhere from 140mil to 200mil plus depending on who you believe. The only reason tranfers are making a profit under him is when we got relegated we had to sell alot of players to stop us going into administration, plus a certin price we got for judas was helpful, who would you rather have demba ba, cabaye, mareaux and tiote or kevin nolan + 2 million? A good scouting network is saving us alot of money, arsenal have been doing it for years and it will benefit them massiveley when the new rules come into play.

here we go again it looks like we are not building asquad we are keeping the same squad with different names, trouble is no matter what quality we are bringing in they have to settle down and learn to play with each other. Jonas and Jose have a great understanding both can be frustrating but both can turn a game and certainly look the best left sided players in the PL when on song. I know they command high wages but until the new players get established we need stability and that will come only by keeping Jonas, Jose, Joey, and Colli, blending them with the new squad can only be good for the toon and if the new guys get established then perhaps that is the time to let the old guard go to pastures new, their resale value will surely be enhanced if we get them to sign contracts and they look good in a strong team made up of a blend of experience and youth. That is the way forward.

Would love Jonas to stay and I read a little while back that he has no plans to go anywhere. Still, if the deal is right for everyone, I guess that could change.

Shame really; I like the lad and he has a lot of quality. Defenders must hate playing against him.

Eastander, Jonas has played almost 3x more games than Routeledge, and not as many as a sub late on where he can use his pace against tiring legs.

Jonas gives miles more to the team both up AND down the pitch too.

    No brainer!

I’ve just remembered something. Didnt Jonas do an interview a few weeks back where he said he’d only leave newcastle for an Italian club?

As Ollieh51 says though, I can’t really see him being sold if he was important enough to play every game last season.

Get your filthy Spanish eyes of Gutierrez!!

Btw, Ed I think it’s a bit premature to include Cabaye wall of fame banner. I’d prefer if you swapped him with Shola or Gutierrez or u could swap him with Smith considering that Smith is the next natural leader after Nolan.

    I am with Eastander…

While Jonas is a trier, his end product and scoring record is terrible. Let him go for 5mill.

Whoever said ‘play him in the middle’ needs shooting. Jonas is made of straw and cannot tackle in any way shape or form.

Keep WR and let this lad go. Shearer knew how frustrating he was for strikers and that is why he stayed on the bench.

6 mill – pull your hand off.

expectation will lead to a fall for those who believe that, even when he cuts back on his right his final ball is poor at best, as for WR would rather see us keep lua lua at he club

    Eaqstander, he’s RIGHT footed!!

And we had Ferguson, Guthrie who was played out on the right at times by Pards as did CH, AND sent Routledge and Lua Lua out on loan.

If you’re telling me that it’s because of a lack of options, I think you’re very much mistaken.

@Jack – Im pretty sure the only assists he’s ever got were when he cuts back and crosses with his right like.

Jonas’s main threat isnt his crossing though, its his direct running which pulls 2 or 3 players out of position, creating space for the attack.

@Eastander and Stuart – You see what he did St Andrews last season too btw?

2x Left footed crosses, we walked away 2-0 winners.

No he’s not naturally a left sided player, but he obviously does a job better than anyone else in the squad could.
