Newcastle have been linked with top 21 year-old Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko.
Moussa Sissoko – Newcastle are interested
The highly rated 21-year-old may be leaving the French club he’s been at since 2003, but he will not come cheaply.
The news doing the rounds on Saturday evening is that Moussa Sissoko is in negotiations with Liverpool and Newcastle United over a potential transfer to the Premier League.
How is it that Liverpool and Newcastle seem to be after the same players this summer?
Other clubs interested in the 6’2″ central midfielder include Inter Milan and Lyon, and this lad is certainly well thought of.
Sissoko’s agent Bacary Sanogo has said the French international (3 caps) has had several offers with the best up till now being surprisingly from top French club Lyon.
This is what Bacary said:
“The link with Lyon is serious, but it is not the only one,” “There are also negotiations with Liverpool, Newcastle and Inter. Things should seriously move next week.”
“His priority is a club with a major sporting project. But it will not pose a problem to Moussa to remain with Toulouse.”
Toulouse President Olivier Sadran is said to be unwilling to accept a bid of anything less than €15M (£13.4M] for his top player – but that’s just the usual talk of a club official who wants to maximize the transfer price of one of his top players – and he’s probably worth that amount.
Sissoko has two years left on his contract, and is of Malian descent, and has often been compared with a young Patrick Vierra in the way he plays the game.
Sissoko is a box-to-box midfielder capable of playing in either the holding role or as an attacker, and the youngster has been described as a well-rounded central midfielder who is tall, rangy, and strong in the tackle.
As we said Moussa is extremely highly regarded in France, and if he comes to Newcastle it will simply be a terrific signing for the club.
Since 2007 he has played 144 times for Toulouse with 30 goals and 7 assists, and has played for the French U16, U17,U18, U19 and U21 sides – he made 20 appearances for France at the U21 level.
Newcastle have been linked with this player since the summer of 2008 when Kevin Keegan was manager, and we had three reports on Newcastle’s interest in the player in 2008.
In December of 2008, the then teenager had talked about Newcastle United to Sky Sports:
“I don’t know where the speculation regarding Newcastle has come from, but it is good to be watched by scouts,”
“Sometimes these things come to nothing and they recruit a different player, but if they want me then I am working hard.”
“I love the Premier League. It is the best league in the world. The stadiums are always full and I believe my game would be suited to the English style as I like the physical aspects of it.”
“Newcastle? They are a big team, with big support. From what I have been told they have the best fans in England.”
“But, it is up to Toulouse. I am happy here and I am still learning. If they think it is time for me to move on then I will, but at the moment my desire is to play for Toulouse and keep on proving myself.”
Let’s hope he thinks as highly of Newcastle as the three players we have already brought to the club this summer – and it certainly looks like it.
What do you think?

Comment #6Where would he fit in our midfield? Dont see the point in blowing 13.4 mill on a player who might not be able to play unless we have more that the AC money as our tranfer kitty
Cabaye Tiote and HBA are certain to be in our starting 11 next season thats our central midfield sorted

The Game was great. With a final score of 8 – 5. And my lads team are now District Champions. My lad scored one assisted 2 and set one up from a break from a corner. AND I AM CHUFFED TO BITS. So now on to the County Championships

Comment #28Don’t know anything about him other than he is good on football manager, no way to judge a player :P. Yet again another midfielder we’re linked with. So far we’ve lost 1 gained 2 and seem to still want more. £13.4m or whatever the price is a hell of a gamble on this guy but i’ll repeat what i’ve said in the past if carr thinks he is worth it i have complete faith in him.
