Newcastle Could Be Back For First-Class Stephen Ireland

With the departure of Kevin Nolan and the potential departure of Joey Barton this summer, we wondered what the situation was with Stephen Ireland.

Stephen Ireland – while at Newcastle earlier this year

Stephen had a disastrous time of things with injuries on his loan spell at Newcastle earlier this year, and managed only two substitute appearances in his time on Tyneside, when he moved on loan on the last day of the January transfer window.

And with former Birmingham manager Alex McLeish taking over at Aston Villa, it could be he will be brought in from the cold he endured under former French manager Gerard Houllier, who didn’t rate him.

Even though Ireland had a tough time of things with injuries, he still showed some significant class in training.

Newcastle would like to get a good cut-price deal on Ireland (who wouldn’t?), but the news in the Sunday Sun today is that Newcastle would offer only around £2M for Ireland, which seems a bit on the low side.

The news is that Aston Villa wanted £5M for him in January, although the reports out at the time said that was as high as £8M, but Villa may be willing to cut their losses on a player who was signed by former manager Martin O’Neill for £8M from Manchester City last summer.

The news is that Stephen would still  jump at the chance to move to Newcastle, and a senior Newcastle source told the Sunday Sun:

“Nothing is imminent with Stephen, but it is not one to write off just yet.”“He might not have played but he was unlucky with injuries and his attitude and work-rate while he was here were absolutely first class.”

“He was finished at Villa under Gerard Houllier but a new manager might change things for him.” “He would like to come back but it depends on Villa now.”

“I think Stephen is one that we’ll keep an eye on with a view to maybe ‘nicking him’ at the end of the window.”

Even though he had lots of injuries this year, we think Stephen Ireland would be a great acquisition for Newcastle, and an absolute steal at just £2M.

What do you think.

    1. It’s Sunday.
    2. We had him on loan.

Put 2 and 2 together and you get a half believable story on a day where the press are allowed to talk even more bollocks than usual.

Bit of a trouble maker, went out boozing before a game he couldnt play in because he was injured the whole time we had him? Bargain at 2 mil? Possibly would he remain injury free and not make trouble doubt it.

That said, I’d still love to have him in the squad. He’s a great player and I reckon he’ll find his form again up here. Very composed on the ball, very good passer, movement is decent and he was unlucky not to nick a goal or two.

villa wouldn’t take 2M in any case and tbh I think we dodged a bullet there.

i think if we can get him for 2 mil and get him fit and playing regularly it will be well worth it if he can find the form where he was city’s player of the season

Just what we need, someone who came here on loan and couldn’t even stay fit. This story is a non starter for me.

Maybe an each way bet this one. Understand everyone’s reasoning on him thus far as well! Not lived up to early potential has he? Might come good again IF his fitness and motivation improve.

All three werent playing the next day though so I dont see the problem myself. They werent even drinking if you believe the press release the club brought out afterwards.

Not really sure if we need another attacking midfielder, as we already have HBA, Cabaye, Marveaux… Really depends on how much would Ireland cost. He seems to be a player who would love to play for NUFC tho

At 2M, he’d be our signing of the season. Unlucky with injuries last time he was here, but when he did play looked very composed, assured, and good movement on and off the ball. As long as he stays fit, 2M would be a steal.

There was pictures of Him and Best taken in a pub both showing off there stomachs and unless im mistaken it was before a game? It caused a bit of an uproar and both got slapped wrists. Even though they were injured and couldnt play still not very proffesional.

@WWJBD: Oh right, forgot all about that. Yeah, it was bad form by them but tbh I don’t expect any player to stop living because they’re a footballer; as long as it doesn’t affect their football, I don’t care tbh. (See: Dyer.) Also being injured in the beautiful game doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t go out. If we’re hurt and we call in sick to work it’s usually because we’re seriously injured and can’t perform the job’s tasks – with football it’s more minor things that mean they can’t do what’s required.

    But aye, fair point anyway.

Aye I didn’t care at the time and I don’t care now tbh. Neither even travelled with the team because they were hurt neither drank and neither did anything to hurt the clubs image…it was just a few lads having a laugh

Its funny to me people judge Ireland on that but are happy to keep gangsta Ranger with his gun poses

Im not keen on believing the Sunday Sun anymore and haven’t been for a while. Needing to sell papers is their main prerogative, not bringing accurate info to the fans when it comes to transfer news.

Would be nice if we announced some signings today. Is it a possibility that the players could be signed off now but announcements will wait til 1st July?

If this 1st of July thing is for international signings then I dont quite understand how we’ve announced Cabaye can anyone shed any light?

McLeish has got to want to get Ireland motivated to play for Villa.

I guess if Ireland really hates Birmingham, or the commute, or the club, then there’s nothing Mcleish can do except sell him.

The figure is made up to make a vaguely possible transfer deal seem more credible.

    I’d guess closer to 5M.

That being said if he comes in and performs like Barton has this season a player with another shady past i’ll be gladly proved wrong!
