There were reports over the weekend that Arsenal could be looking to sign Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique.
Jose Enrique – Arsenal may be interested
Jose is bring linked with Arsenal, because their current left-back Gael Clichy could be leaving Arsenal this summer.
There have been reports from Italy that Roma claim they are ready to offer a £20M, five-year contract for the French International left-back.
Clichy is the same age as Enrique, 25, and has been at Arsenal since 2003, and both players have just one year left on their contracts, and the news is that Liverpool have also put in a bid of £5M for the Arsenal defender.
That’s interesting, because Liverpool had been favorites to sign Jose from Newcastle, but the Magpies have so far received no bids for the Spanish U21 International.
Clichy has played 264 times for the Gunners since 2003, with two goals.
Arsene Wenger is keen to keep the French International (10 caps) at the Emirates Stadium and had this to say about Clichy:
“We have started talks with Gael and want him to stay.”
It will take some sorting out this summer, and if Arsenal do lose Clichy, they could well come after Enrique.
And Liverpool still have to sign a top class left-back thus summer, and it’s possible Jose could move there too.
We just hope that Newcastle have their eyes on a suitable replacement if Jose does move, and the the club don’t sell Jose at the last minute in the transfer window, and then fail to bring in a replacement.
That’s a scenario Newcastle somehow managed to accomplish with Andy Carroll in January.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41I think that once players are back in pre season, we will see a bit more movement. Players are on holiday until then and I’m sure they will have spoken to agents/clubs about possibilities of moves, but will be in better position to get things moving then.

Comment #42If I was in charge, altho I want him to stay, I wudnt have us being messed about like he’s doing now. Id be saying here is a deadline, if u haven’t signed with us by then we’ll be starting negotiations with a scouted target. Giving him time is fine, but he said he discuss contract when we were safe… That was ages ago. Club comes before him and we need players in ready to start pre – season together for bonding and tactics.

Comment #49Regardless of whether they are in Champions League or not Liverpool are still a bigger pull than us and a step up.
They are the 2nd biggest club in England and one of biggest in Europe. Would not blame him for going there.

I rate Demba Ba mate. I think he’ll get a good few goals next season and be an important part of the squad. He’s worth atleast 7-8Million so the fact that we got him for free is leading people to believe he’ll be a flop or another Albert Luque.
His goal scoring record is excellent and he’s attributes are exactly whats required in this division. i think he’ll be a big hit and we’ll be chanting his name before the end of August.

Comment #54I’m not saying the 2nd best team, but as a club other than Man U they are the biggest, their name is known throughout europe and they carry that pull for players.

Comment #57If demba ba can stay for for teh majority of teh season we will have a very good striker on our hands, better than the others on our books already. Ben Arfa will be a cracking 2nd striker in the centre,

Comment #59I hope he does go. No matter how could good he is for the team, he lied to us by saying he would definetly sign a new contract once we were mathematically safe from relegation. Plus if we get 12 to 15M for him, with the price of defenders, we could get 1 quality replacement, then 2 decent squad players for defence for better depth along the back 4.
Although it been suggested we wont loan any players, i think youngsters like Dedryk Boyata of Man City on loan would be good a signing for cover. Would people be happy with Kieron Gibbs as a full time replacement for Enrique? I would, i think he would be a ready made replacement for him, in the same mould as Enrique, plus hes english. Gibbs plus 8M i’d be very happy!
We also need someone like Aaron Hughes. Not Aaron Hughes, but someone like him i rekon. Somebody who is equally able to play at CB, LB and RB just to fill a hole and do a job when required. Hard to find players who can play in all across the back line though.

Comment #60It has got to the stage where I will be annoyed if Enrique stays because i’m sick to death of hearing stories that are neither here nor there.
Mess us around like this and you are gone and there will be no warm welcome if you ever come back.
Even if he goes to Arsenal it will be a sideways step, they won’t give him any more wages and their trophy days are over.
