There’s a report in the Northern Echo today that Alan Pardew will be stepping up his interest in Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson today.
Darron Gibson – is this lad good enough for Newcastle?
We’re not entirely convinced that Darron would be a good buy for Newcastle at around £5M, since he hardly looked impressive last season with the Red Devils.
Sunderland are said to also be interested in the midfielder, and the news today is that Alan Pardew will concentrate over the next 24 hours and try to broker a deal for Darron.
The Ireland international has been told he is now surplus to requirements at the Premier League Champions, and the news is that Manchester United officials have already accepted a £12M bid from Sunderland for three players – Gibson, Wes Brown and John O’Shea.
Pardew believes the 23-year-old could be a good replacement for Joey Barton (not Kevin Nolan), and if this is true it seems Newcastle will want to move Joey out this summer.
Pardew will call his pal Alex Ferguson to see if Newcastle can get a deal worked out for Gibson.
But we wonder if this lad would be a good deal at £5M – so let us know in the following poll.

Comment #2It isnt a case of good enough or not, we already have more than enough CM’s, if he came he’d be at least 4th or 5th choice so theres no point wasting the money.

Comment #6Why do we need mediocre midfielders?
Weve got Guthrie for that, also, getting a fringe player like Gibson in only pushes the likes of Vuckic further away from the first team.
2 Strikers are our prioirty.

Comment #9Manure fans don’t rate him.
He had to close his Twatter account because of so much abuse from his own team’s fans.
I’d say no, there must be better options for 5M.
However I’m not going to say no to any players coming in.
Would rather Barton got a new contract with the 5M.

Comment #10Would be very disappointed with a signing of Gibson. I really dont understand those 5 thinking this would be a good signing for even 5 mill.
Can some of you tell me why you think so?

Comment #14In agreement with most of the comments here. He is a midfielder of very limited ability. He cant even get in ahead of Glen Whelan and Keith Bloody Andrews for the RoI when their in despret need of a creative spark.I hardly think he’ll get in ahead of Tiote and Cabye!!??Danny Guthrie is in my opinion more talented anyway so its a non runner.

Comment #15@11 Routledge is only asking for what his contract entitles him to.
Nasty tactics by the board to leak the story calling him “greedy”.

I think the ‘real’ story on Rout was that QPR have limited funds and they have priorities to sign players in other positions first as Rout was only brought in as cover, so they pulled the plug on him.

Comment #18Would prefer Barton but i think he is a decent player with a great shot AT TIMES but why are we still trying to sign loads of midfielders? WE NEED SOME STRIKERS!

Comment #19Not sure about Gibson. He might be a decent player but thats in a very good team. Wonder if he would cut it with a lesser good team – Like Sunderland. 🙂
BUT, We need strikers, not midfielders.

Comment #24I am not saying he is BRILLIANT. But for a squad player he is great and still young. If you watched him for Man U at times he looked BRILLIANT. Just didn’t get a long run in the team due to top top quality.
But 5m maybe bit too much, but same price as Gardner and Gibson is younger and perhaps has potential to be much better.

Comment #26the fact that he’s thrown into the hat with WES BROWN, and JOHN O’SHAY, tells u that he’s good but never quailty – if 5under1and have indeed bid 13m for all 3 of these players, then let it be cos THAT DONT SOUND LIKE A EUROPEAN DREAM TEAM.

Comment #30like most others im really confused over the current transfer policy. really pleased with who we’ve brought in. dont think gibson is a first xi player, but would add youth and depth to a thin squad. given the number of cm we are being linked with just wonder whether pardew will play 3 cm next year with two wide and one up top. but i think the 5m would be much better going on gibsons team mate jonny evans who is rumoured to be available. but pardew needs to get that striker in, any news on erdic or sturridge?

Comment #31Seems like wed be taking him as a favour to utd or hes agent to get access to other players loans etc. so we can gain favour at utd. to be honest I can see tiote going for big bucks before the window closes and this guy is seen as a suitable replacement? The money could be spend alot better, give Joey the extra year contract and make him captain wel need the steel he provides what are we playing at?

i’d take whickham though…nobody else the scum is after however
Darron Gibson infuriates me as an Irishman, one minute he’s putting in top class performances for United against Bayern Munich and Lyon, the next he’s flopping against Wolves and West Ham
That said as cover he’s streets ahead of Guthrie, its just I don’t fancy letting him control the engine room, he’d go missing too much.
Btw he did do his best to keep us up in 09, scoring an absolute belter from 30 yards against Hull!

Comment #35Sorry ed, but Your asking whether or not a lad who has just been part of the champions side being good enough?! We finished 12th and maybe only Enrique would get in their team. Gibson is young and fair play to him, wants to play regularly. For 5m I think he would compliment our other midfielders.

Comment #36I think you’re definately right about playing 4-5-1 next season like, also I’d love it if we stuck a cheeky bid in for Jonny Evans, he’s already good and I reckon he’ll be class in a year or two’s time.

Comment #39I think there should be 2 players for each position and then a couple extra/young uns. I also would like to see us play a 4-3-3/4-5-1. I don’t see us needing Darren Gibson.
Harper/Forster/Krul
+1/Simpson Taylor/Kadar Collocini/Willo.. Enrique/ +1
Cabaye/Guthrie Tiote/Gosling
Ben Arfa/Vukic
+1/+1 Marveux/Guttierez
Ba/+1
Extras – Ferguson, Ameobi, Lovenkrands, Lua Lua
Sell: Perch, R Taylor, Barton, Smith, Best
We should still have £30 mill from A Carroll sale + £15 mill which we should have had anyway. Say £8 mill from the sales that gives £53 mill left.
RB – Not sure, should be a good frenchman somewhere equivalent to M’Bengue on the left – £6 mill
LB – Taylor – £1 mill
RW – N’Zogbia – £10 mill
RW – Another frenchman with potential perhaps? – £4m
Striker – Sturridge – £10 – £12 mill
That’s only £33 mill so room to negotiate. Think that would give us a strong squad with pace that could challenge top 6 if we were okay with injuries.
Wouldn’t mind matuidi as well at £13 mill and let Guthrie go to Brum. Then we could play with Matuidi and Tiote against big teams in front of our back for for a bit more solidity.
Sorted.
