Readers Want Steven Taylor As New Captain

We’ve just closed our poll on who should be the new Newcastle captain.

Steven Taylor – won the vote with 35% of vote

Kevin Nolan is gone, and Alan Pardew ill need to appoint a new Newcastle captain and we see that former captain Bobby Moncur ( now there’s a real Newcastle hero) has come out in favor of Fabricio Coloccini as the new captain.

That’s because Bobby cites  Coloccini’s vast experience and also the way he sets an example with his excellent play in the heart of the Newcastle defense.

Quite honestly we’d be happy enough with either Steven or Fabricio as the new captain, because both are totally committed to Newcastle, and we think both would do a good job as captain.

Steven won in our poll with 35% of the vote, with Coloccini second on 31% and Joey Barton third with 20% – and just over 2700 votes were cast – with each reader having just one vote.

Here are the full results:

Who Will Be Newcastle's Captain Next Season?

  • Steven Taylor (35%, 939 Votes)
  • Fabricio Coloccini (31%, 850 Votes)
  • Joey Barton (20%, 537 Votes)
  • Cheick Tiote (5%, 134 Votes)
  • Not Sure (3%, 73 Votes)
  • Yohan Cabaye (2%, 66 Votes)
  • Player Still To Arrive (2%, 57 Votes)
  • Ben Arfa (2%, 45 Votes)

Total Voters: 2,701

I just think Steven would make a better captain; he’s English speaking, and therefore can communicate with the referee, and he always gives 110% when he plays.

Worthy winner of the poll imo. I’d have him as captain and Barton vice-captain, but if Barton stays I reckon Pardew will give him it due to him AP always kissing his arse.

Fine yea, but is S Taylor even guaranteed a starting place? It was only when Willo was injured he came in. He played very well but we have also struggled in the past when he’s played. Let’s not forget the saylor/ Collo partnership took us down – Collo and Willo were better than a lot of people give credit for.

the 45 people who voted for Ben Arfa as captain!?!? …. 3 starts for the club. Ok you liked his goal against Everton but seriously… words fail me.

Whilst I can see the arguments for Saylor, I have to agree with Moncur…Colo for me!

I may be doing the lad a huge dis-service, but he never strikes me as the sharpest tool in the box.

A captain, for me, needs to demonstrate a little intelligence?

Taylor is injury prone from the past couple of years and he is not a leader at all… Colo is the perfect choise.

If Barton was staying id give him it, I still may even if he was here only next year. Colo wud be my preference if Barton was discounted due to that fact that he has proved his quality and actually will play most of the games, whereas Taylor may be in and out of the team a bit more through an injury or being banned for his usual rashness of extreme defending. Plus colo is the more experienced, classy and leads by example. I dont know what hes like in the dressing room, so that holds a major sway. His English isn’t great either. I did read that he wanted it when it was up for grabs last time though.

Wickham’s an exciting, english young player – he’ll take a while to adapt no doubt, but he’s a player bought with the potential to build upon over the ensuing years.

Taylor, Captain? Mental. Not so long ago, he was on his way. He is not a definite starter, and is an average defender.

Just because he shakes his fist at the crowd doesn’t make him a leader of men.

Clearly, he has gained the “heart” as opposed to “head” vote on here.

Please stop dreaming lads, we haven’t got the attraction of Euro football for a player like Gomez, although I would love to see him join the Toon 😀

Saylor or Colo as captain. Colo, I would think is favourite, as he has stood in for Nolan a fair few times.

Joey is captain fantastic for me, it would be the making of him, reward this man with new contract and the arm band, taylor is a better RB than simspon, id play ST@RB willi and colo in CB and buy back bassong and use him LB/CB plenty of height at back then and good strong unit. Taylor unsettles the back four when plays CB, drops off to far, posistioning is questionable, decesion making etc. always throwing in last ditch tackles, he is not williamson or bassong quaility but a very good RB and a threat in the box and if iam not mistaken he favours RB over CB.

Only anoraks and mackems would want Taylor to be captain. This is the same bloke that can’t get in the team when Williamson’s fit. Make Tiote or Collocini captain unless we buy a ready made captain.

Looks like Kunal has gone missing. For those of you who missed his post on the previous 89 threads I have cut and pasted it so you don’t feel you have missed out-

‘does anybody remember bartons twitter comment about how we were replacing our players with younger, cheaper and better options
    so far

    out——————-in

    nolan————–cabaye——-younger
    carrol————-ba————cheaper
    routledge———marveaux—-better’

I for one look forward to the next thread where I can read this again.

    That is all.

Taylor cant be our captain, he doesnt understand how to play his own postion nevermind tell the rest of the team what to do. I think we should make barton captain for the time being and maybe wait till january to see who shines out of new players and if there is any communication problems with collo or whoever else pardew fancies.

In the past we have signed captains such as nolan and i wouldnt be suprised to see it happen again. I personally would rather have colo captain than taylor. Colo was a rock last season and honestly when was the last time taylor remained injury free for a whole season. Colo imho is massively under rated as was his partership with williamson. Williamsons first season in the prem (despite being at pompy never played) i think was pretty good considering the amount of flack some people give.

If Barton stays he’s the obvious choice. If not, who is even a nailed-on starter of every game with anything like the experience? I guess Collo – but he is pretty low-key in fairness..

Tiote and Cabaye – the potential but hardly close yet…

Maybe it’s just another reason to give Barton that contract.

How is Ba cheaper than Carroll? Carroll cost us nothing and came through the youth system, we had to pay Ba a huge signing on fee and as for Barton, the sooner he’s sold the better – the guy has no pace, scores hardly any goals and is a high ball merchant.

Captain needs to be guaranteed a start, I dont think Saylor is.

Unless someone comes in who is a proven leader then I think we should be looking at:

    Collo Capt.
    Saylor Vice Capt.

    Bob Moncur said Collo too…

I personally went for Colo as my Captain, he stands head and shoulders above the other defenders for quality, consistency and he’s rarely injured. Very cultured and intelligent player, reads the game beautifully. Heard he’s not very vocal so he would have to lead by example but his example is a good one to follow.
