Newcastle Not Pursuing Sturridge – Why Not?

Disappointing new today being reported by the Evening Chronicle that Newcastle are not going to join the race to sign England under-21 striker Daniel Sturridge.

Daniel Sturridge – not coming to Newcastle – why not?

The local paper is reporting that Alan Pardew does not have Sturridge on the list of players he is trying to acquire this summer.

So we have no idea why this is the case, but we hope it’s not because the youngster is too expensive – but we are starting to have our doubts.

The Birmingham-born 21-year-old former Aston Villa trainee, is extremely popular with Newcastle fans, and we’ve had a number of articles out on the player, who we think would be just a terrific signing for Newcastle.

Sturridge spent this year on loan at Bolton Wanderers, and scored an amazing 8 goals in 12 appearances, but not only that, the lad looked very good indeed.

A Newcastle United source said today:

“The manager is looking into other players, so it is unlikely Sturridge will be coming to Newcastle.”

This is disappointing news to say the least, as Sturridge seems to check all of the points of a young player Newcastle want to bring to Tyneside this summer.

What do you think?

Chelsea have said £20M for him, also, I bet his wages are silly money too.

If we can get someone of equal class for less money then I have no issue.

£20M on one player is A LOT of money.

Not sure where people are getting 20M from, I’ve seen prices of 6M+. Disappointing to hear we’re not in the race, I reckon 8-10M would have got him…

His sell on value would be so much more if he continues the way he has been.
Would have been a chance for Ashley to show the fans that he means business.

They had to pay a settlement fee to city of around 7m. Chelsea would never take less. Look at the english market at mo – Carroll 35 Henderson 30 Jones – 16? Bent was 24m whickham 13m do you really think Sturridge would only be 10 ….

@No.4 Chelsea issued a statement about it a few weeks ago, and then told Bolton that it would be 20m after they bid 6. Could just be paper talk, but that’s two seperate reports claiming the 20m figure.

I also agree with NUFC_Richyg01 that 20m is a lot to spend on one player. Especially when it’s not a certainty that he’s worth that much, or would be worth that much again when we inevitably sell him on.

    @ 8

It was Stoke who bid £6M.

Also if we spend £20M on 1 player, thats £10M+ less for other players

He is not worth anywhere near the 20 million Chelsea quoted Stoke so smart move from us to back out. If he was foreign we would sign him for a few millions because he has done nothing what so ever to suggest he is worth any more.

    Much cheaper to shop abroad.

    Good player but too expensive.
I’d rather we kept on signing players like the three so far.

We will never spend the 35m we got on transfers. It will include wages and agent fee’s etc. I wish people wouldnt waffle on like its a god given right to have this 35m to spend. In reality knowing what Ma is like and what hes trying to do i doubt we will spend 20m altogether.

This is being reported by the chronicle, same newspaper that said we had no interest in singing ba a few days before he signed. The club keep deals very much in-house now, and dont normally comment on deals until they are signed. Pardew said he wanted most of his deals done before pre season so i would expect deals this week, the players are back in training on monday.

I’m told we did consider sturridge, but apparently the stumbling blocks are that he is on 80k a week at Chelsea and more importantly, reports suggested he has an attitude problem and Is massive time ie very bling. This and the fact that the price of British talent is hugely inflated means we have focused our attentions to Europe.

20 mill for one player is huge money! But 15-16 mill for a certain Alan Shearer 15 years ago was much more but he certainly paid us back. big time. It is a gamle of course but money in the bank won’t win us any matches…

Lads i dont think he would cost 20mill but i did post on one of the earlier issues that i dont think we will see any big money spent on any body we are just not in the position to be snapping up the best young english talent cheaper options from elsewhere will be brought in trust me on that one.

I can see this transfer window going the same way as every other one under Ashley. Put a lot of top quality players names out there that we’re apparently trying to get, then all of a sudden there’s a stumbling block or a snag and we pull out and move onto our other targets, who just so happen to be much cheaper, no where near as good quality players.

I mean the last 2 weeks we were apparently going for players like Erdinc/Sturridge/Matiudi/Sissoko, now all of a sudden we’re interested in players like Gibson/Treacy and ‘Little Donkey’ Juan Manuel Martinez.

Sturridge..Why not? Err, he’s worth a sizeable fee, he will want big wages, he isn’t based in France, he doesn’t have a serious injury on his record, he doesn’t like garlic – ?

    @Teamstoof

So far we are only going to lose Ba and tiote to the African Cup of Nations. Last time i checked, France wasnt part of Africa.

Reason we aren’t goin g after him is because Ashley wants to wear the number 9 this season. He thinks he is better than anyone else, he reckons he can run the club, do the managers job, and scout aswell as play!

Also Ashley doesn’t want to club to be finishing up the top of the table in Prem, he would prefer we yo-yo between the championship and the prem…promotion money is his key as we’ll never win Prem whilst he owns OUR club!!!!!!!!!
Just get the deal done to bring sturridge in we all want him, he would SELL YOU A TRUCK LOAD OF SHIRTS ETC!!!!!!!!

  • Great, a Bunch of Morons on the blog proclaiming its the End of the world as we know it.

Sturridge is not a God ffs. He aint the only talented youngster out there. Seriously some people need to grow up!

    Why the nagging about Sturridge???????

Sure good player, but not worth 60K+ wages, and surely not worth over 10 million quid in transfer fee.

We can get better value for that kind of cash abroad.

The time for us to splash silly cash for English talent has not yet come.. We need to establish ourselves in the top 6 before we go down that road.

The only source quoting 20m is The Express and everyone else has picked the ball up and ran with it, and we all know how reliable Newcastle sources are.I’m still keeping my fingers crossed,we need a new No 9 and imo he’s No 9 material, the Journal know nothing.

solano – thats exactly what i meant, he thinks he can put all these names out then say there been a snag and expects us to believe he actually really did try his best to sign them. I mean everytime a big name big money bid has been apparently lodged by us, the players club has came out and said they’ve had no bids. i.e Gervinho etc

  • @solano

Im sorry, but is Cabaye and Marveux African? is Erdinc and Neil taylor (likely our next two targets if reports are to be believed) African?

    No. End of Story.
