It didn’t take Alan Pardew too long to work out what Newcastle fans want from their team.
Alan Pardew – building exciting side at Newcastle
Newcastle fans just love skillful and creative players, and since Alan has come to the club he has signed Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux, who are all very skilful French midfielders.
Those players will allow the way the side has played over the last two seasons to change, and maybe fairly dramatically too.
Pardew told the local Newcastle press corps today:
“I am hoping to deliver a side which looks a little bit different and our style will change a little bit too.”
“I am hoping we will have an exciting season – and that is how the team will be set up, to be exciting.”
“I cannot wait to start and be around the city and the club again.” “I will be working with the players to try to make it successful for the fans.”
“The fans – as always – are the important part for us.”
There’s little doubt that Alan Pardew is going all out to re-shape the Newcastle side, into something the Newcatsle fans will just love to support.
Whether Alan can be successful in doing that we don’t know, but at least Alan seems to be on the right track, and that’s good to see.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

13.5 million has been bidded for Taarabt….is someone taking the pee?

The signings so far have been good but what else lays in store for us? Who will be sold? Who will replace them?
IF the window shut today (lol) I’d say we’re “about” on parr with last season’s squad.
4 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 1, 2011 at 12:48 PM
13.5mil from PSG. I highly doubt Ashley will bid more than 10mil for any single player.

well..its exciting alright..but we need more bodies in.. the #9 jersey still up for grabs..a striker (even if its gonna cost us 20 odd million) and cover for jose at lb..that should do!! give the likes of fergie, vuckic, tavernier, abeid more time on the pitch..who knows what could be hidden in this crop!!

Surely our squad as a whole is stronger.
I think we will certainly have more flair and pace in the side.
The one thing we are lacking is goals.

If we are after at least two new players, I hope it is going to be soon so the team has the maximum time to get to know each others game style, If the scouting and everything has been on the go since we got the money in Jan, Then surely we must be ready to make our moves now!

A lot of people seem to think we lack depth in the squad. In reality we lack a decent medical staff the amount of injuries we seem to have season after season is phenominal. Consider this 2 players for every position not including youth players would represent a squad with good depth. Right now we have:
GK- Harper/Krul/Forster no problems there
RB-Simpson/Raylor- Not good enough for any of the teams above us both solid back up not reliable week in week out
LB-Enrique/Ferguson-Best left back in the league and a more than able deputy with real potential.Hope he stays if not has to be replaced with a quality international left back. Naylor is not needed he will only stunt Fergusons development because lets face it ferguson is not going to see much time on the left wing this season. Naylor is being lucked at as Enriques replacement whether they denie it or not its obvious its how the club operates buy young cheap etc.
CB-Collocini/Saylor/Williamson/Kadar-Where not to bad at centre back i think given a full pre season together Saylor/Collocini will be a very solid partnership
both know where the net is aswell although sometimes not there own. I do think we need one quality CB if we could get samba he’d be brilliant will Collo. Doubt that will happen though
DM- Tiote/Gosling- I think where solid here assuming Goslings Fitness is not going to be an issue longterm. I do think one more young hungry DM is required with Tiotes love of all thing yellow and who better to learn from than Mr T.
CM-Barton/Cabaye/Guthrie-No immediate need to splash on this position plenty of youngsters vying for recognition in the middle of park, let it develop for at least season see if someone can step up and challenge.
RM-LuaLua/Mehdi- We really don’t have a natural Established RM we need to strengten here or at least give the lad a chance.Believe me Mehdi is a winger not a DM as is being Touted he can tackle though.
LM-Guttierrez/Marveaux- Nothing wrong with that Marveaux’s a flyer believe me he’ll do serious damage this year and you can’t double up on him and leave the Space for Benni to Exploit that link up will be critical this season if it fires as it should we’ll be capable of beating any team in league again all down to keeping both fit and happy.
AM-Ben Arfa/Vuckic- Where not flush will players here and Vuckic is completey unproven i probably shouldn’t include him but i think he’ll either make it or break it this season. Would love to see Ryad Boudebouz in the Black & White he has Silky Skills born to play at St.James park.
CF-Ba/Best- Both of these guys are capable of playing at the top level but consistency is and issue for both there confindence players. We need to get new NO.9
capable of 20+ goals a season. Erdinc/Sturrigde/Gervinho are not the answer over inflated values for players who have ability but not the prolific scoring touch Sturridge scored 8 in 12 jugde him over 38 lot of players have got 8 in 12 and then dried up Zaki is a prime example at Wigan at while back would you take him now? Everyone wants these guys because because there rumoured to be on the radar. Look at the foreign Leagues there’s plenty of Talented Strikers out there. I’d go all out for Benzema if Ben Arfa loves newcastle united he’ll bury the hatchet and then they bust the net together all season long. Hulk is quality but i honestly believe Benzema is more realistic as he not exactly in favour at Madrid. With all the Frenhies we’d a decent shout nothing to lose in trying.
Any players i’ve left out (not including youth players)are not worth keeping they did the job in the championship but we need to progress and there just not good enough. If we invested in the area i’ve mention i truly believe we’d have a great chance of europe.
This is my first post so enjoy hope it makes sense.

38 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Our squad is far better, than the one we finished the season with.
If we could get N. Taylor for £1m and swindle a loan deal for Sturridge, whereby there’s a non-comittal fixed price agreed (say £12m), I think that would be a brilliant strategy.
Every chance of getting a Europa league spot. If we did and Sturridge proved his worth and was a big contributor, then you sign him permanently next summer.
There’d still be the stroppy bunch though, whining even if we achieved that, ‘because our net spend is only £1m… blah blah blah’.
Canny wait!

47 boater // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I think we should just forget about Zog and Sturridge… total red herrings. When has the club ever openly declared an interest?
Taking a deep breath and trying to ignore the promises made about reinvesting the transfer chest.
In goals – we’re sorted.
In defense – we need full back cover on the left.
In midfield – we need a right winger to replace routledge/ allow barton to come infield.
Up front – we need another first choice striker – should heaven forbid Ba not single-handedly replace all goals from Carroll/ Nolan last season. Remember, Best and Ranger are transfer listed… so shola will be no.3/ loverpants no.4.. like it or not.

57 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:36 PM
People seem to not recognise, Nolan only averages 7 goals a season. There have been a few seasons when he has had a ratio of 33 games 1 goal. He’s a far cry from the ‘guaranteed double figures’ that seems to be the accepted supposition.
58 Andy // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:39 PM
People were saying Best deserves a chance after last year. I think he’s decent back up but i still think we need another striker. Knowledge musona from Kaiser chiefs for £600k! That is our man. He’s a beast and has almost everything needed, touch speed and a good finish. http://t.co/N98KJ1o . Even if he doesn’t work out at least it’ll give our ‘brand’ a bit of a boost with an added interest from SAfrica

Everybody is talking about the 35M. But if we wouldn’t have sold AC, we would have ZERO money for transfers?
We would get 10-15M at least no?
So isn’t that around 45-50M to spend on value and first year wages?
Where is the 50M I ask, and not the 35.
And we are getting money all year long – TV, commercials, sponsors, the owner suppose to put some in there and selling players and their wages off the books.
So the wages, of players and stuff, the pitch, the grounds etc, are not suppose to be part of the transfer money budget.
62 Andy // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:45 PM
“The number nine shirt is equally important,” explained the manager. “I will leave the number nine as late as I can.
“I know just what that shirt means to this football club, but there will be a few contenders who could wear that shirt and do it justice.
“It is an important shirt and I might think of giving it to a player who doesn’t get weighed down by it. I will have to assess the characters of the players to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
What does that say to any of you? I can’t think of a player currently here that wouldn’t be weighed down by it. Don’t think we should give it out, just keep it and give it to the top scoring striker next year (if it’s more than 15)

smooth moves – no but last year his goals came to 12 – so like for like/ season for season that needs to be roughly matched up.
gervinho deal confirmed by arsenal. lille want park chu -young as his replacement – same age, even faster and scored 12 from an infield/right attacking position last season for a WOEFUL monaco – best is he’s available at half the price of gervinho.
66 ronjohno // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Off the subject.
I am not an Ashley supporter and unless I am proved wrong next season and after then my opinion of Pardew is zilch.
However if either of these two had come out with the comments Arsene Wenger has today about the way Arsenal run their club and finances there would have been all hell let loose by NUFC supporters..

69 cousto // Jul 1, 2011 at 1:56 PM
@Oleg we have the money for transfers, but when players like Sturridge are being labelled with £20M price tags, the fat man has the right idea keeping the cash in his pocket.
I mean say we got Sturridge for £16M and he was sh*te or got crocked.
How many of the negs who are whining that we aren’t spending all the money, would switch their opinions over and say “should never had paid that much for him”? Seriously they’re just a bunch of f***ing misers.
For all we know we could sign Menez, Martinez and Matuidi next week and Ashley would still be a Grade A c**t.
70 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Boater – aye, but he only scored 2 of those goals, after Carroll left. You’d have to think we’ll be creating a lot more clear chances next season. We’ll see.
On Park. I’ve being calling for him, for months on this blog. He’s a great player, one of few that took on tge mantle of the challenge to keep Monaco up. Playing out of position too.
The only qualms clubs have about signing him, is he has national service to fulfil, before he’s 30, 2 year slog I think?
71 GoalsBringSmiles // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:01 PM
How on earth can you people say that our squad is better than last season? We have lost our most prolific two goalscorers in Nolan and Carrol. We have brought in three players who we have hardly seen kick a ball in the PL-the same goes for Gosling and HBA. Much of the deadwood remains and will need replacing in order to compete, given that we still have one of the smallest squads of senior players in the league. We should not be content at all with this mediocrity.
72 JackButler // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:01 PM

You’ve got to realise that even if we were to win the league, FA cup, league cup and the champions league there would be those on here still slating Ashley. Bitching that the seats are not comfy enough of theres not enough steak in their half time pie’s, its a shame that some don’t understand what it is to run a club realistically

76 geoff777 // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:06 PM
@cousto
Doesn’t matter if he spends 150M next week.
It’s not going to change his character, so yes Grade A without doubt.
What would change is the perception that we are genuinely building a team to try to win something.
A team that’s going to be allowed to progress and not be constantly dismantled to make him a few million in the transfer market.

83 barryvenison // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:11 PM
So on the flipside of the coin their are some on here that will always be happy. If we get relegated again this season then you accountants will be happy cause we get to slash the wage bill even more and sell off our better players(assets). If we make no more signings now or in the January transfer window and marginally stay up you lot will be ecstatic cause it proves that Ashley can keep spending nothing while keeping us afloat and turning us into a profitable business for Ashley for years of mediocrity to come. That really gets you lot excited doesn’t it?
84 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:12 PM
@77
Also, those people who say we should spend £20M on one player then also list off what other positions they want to fill.
Surely its better to spend little on more rather than spend more on few.

just gotta get a few things of ma chest here
1. this is a quote from pardew “The number nine shirt is equally important, “I will leave the number nine as late as I can.”I know just what that shirt means to this football club, but there will be a few contenders who could wear that shirt and do it justice.”It is an important shirt and I might think of giving it to a player who doesn’t get weighed down by it. I will have to assess the characters of the players to make sure that doesn’t happen.” ,,,,, now seens as tho BA is no19, n best is up for sale that leaves shola or loven, either 1 ov those gets it then pardew will have sh!t all over that shirt and us fans
2. keeping loven and shola n selling ranger n best makes no f**king sence,, best n ranger are better players,, younger,, n can both score more in the future n shola n loven will struggle to score 5 goals just like this season

I laugh at you mikes winnits!
“cabaye is worth 10 m easy!! ” but Lille said, a it’s okay, he’s worth 10m but you mikey, can have him for 5!! Half price to you!!
Marveaux worth 10 million, his club oh have him free, it’s no problem, the fact we didn’t offer him le contract has nothing to do with his v poor injury record. We like far mike so his for free!
Ba. 10 mill, hoofeyhim, you can have him for 6 mill as we watch the films you make david, especially Lydia does London! And then the ammers say, fat mike is the kiddy and we may beable to get some chubby chasers in one of our movies! So he can have him for nout!

@NUFC_Richyg01
Ofcourse not. But nor did Arsenal sell a single player for 35million and foolishly say they promise to plough it all back into the squad.
The oportunity is there for us to quicken the process in becoming an ‘Arsenal clone’ if you will, and like i say i’d be happy with watching exciting football and internationals scattering our squad. Arsenal are nowhere near being relegated, but then neither should we be. More chance of it than they have though as we need a goal threat.
I doubt very much Arsenal would sell Van Persie for example and leave themselves with Best as a replacement.
104 barryvenison // Jul 1, 2011 at 2:31 PM
@alex84- If we were to sign say, 4 more quality players or even potentially good players I would be happy regardless of if they cost millions or were free. But that is not the noises coming out of Pardew’s mouth now is it. 1 player MAYBE 2 players coming in. And after years to judge Ashley in the transfer window i feel I have the right to make my own judgement. He has two months to prove me wrong. I can’t understand how you lot seem to have faith and trust in someone that has done nohting to promote such behavior.

3. if pardew in being serious bwt 2 more players in were f**kd, we have currently 24 players that are 21 or over and need to be registered now we can safely presume that
1 GK
enrique
perch
guthrie
smith
routledge
best
will be sold that leaves us with 17 over 21s,, we shud have 25 that leaves 8 f**king places 2 to be filled
2 wingers
2 CM
2 strikers
1 LB starter
LB cover
gotta admit after feeling pardew was serious about having a great squad a feel let down n very sceptical that carr has been around the world looking for players n cabaye is the only player hes found so far tbh (he cudnt have watched marveaux he was injured, we only went for ba as he was free n abied was on trial)

The positive spin Im hoping I can put on De Pardue’s comments regarding the #9 is that; reading between the lines it suggests he will be looking to bring another centre forward in, someone who may be fitting of the #9.
Saying as Ba has been given 19, and neither Shola, Best or Lovekrands were given it post Martins leaving, then any player being granted it now would have to be brought in.
Erding new number 9? A defienite possibility.
Im sure even Angry would be satisfied somewhat in signing Erding? hes surely no mug and got to be better than Carlton Cole for example?

Ok people, The big cheese, Mr Ashley has said that he wants the club to be self sufficent within 5 years. The guy is a complete tw@, but if he can make us self reliant and still allow us to progress as a team, then i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, he has to spend some wedge in this transfer window first, then he can model us on the Arsenal’s of this world, lets be fair, if he can make us self sufficent, it can only be for the long term good of NUFC. Granted it will be a rough ride along the way and I guarantee he will upset us many more times before we get there. As I said I just hope he can keep the team moving forward while doing it.
155 JohnnyBrookes // Jul 1, 2011 at 3:08 PM
My opinon – Everybody wants what is best for the club clearly. But the thing is people like myself, angryman, etc just want to see the money earned from player sales re-invested in players.
For those who are unclear, this is not “plunging the club into debt” this is not spending what we dont have. This is completely sustainable and the correct way to operate a football club.

Oh Angryman, you really are an angry man. I like you as a man who is passionate about our club, but you don’t take well to a difference of opinion, do you.
I’ve never, for one second, believed that we would be spending £35m or more on players in this window; I have come to realise our owner just isn’t that way inclined. As long as I get a good team to watch when the window closes, I’m happy, and I think I’ll have that.
I’m sure you don’t want us to go down again just so you can say “I told you so”, but your negativity (not realism, mate, negativity) does make it sound like you do.
And leave Davybtoon alone. He’s not a mackem, or a scouser, or a manc, or a spud. He’s one of us and he has some optimism, which makes him a good lad. Play nice gents.

anyway Alex84, you miss my point-maybe I am deluded in presuming that MA will not significantly improve the squad, maybe I got it all wrong and for once he won’t try to make a profit-it certainly looks that way eh?! ahem. My point in the comment you refer to however, was that the first 100 posts on this thread were ridiculously optimistic and state that we have a better squad than last season as things stand this is simply untrue-anybody with a brain can see this and settling for only one or two more signings, whatever the cost, and whatever quality the player is, is simply not enough, we had a paper thin squad last season and if we go into the next one we will be massively ill-equipped.
